What can we do about Warner Bros?

I think Warner has done fairly well in their Blu efforts. Sure, it is annoying to have to select the HD track every time, but it's a trade off I'll take over instant menus, trailers, ads, etc. Too bad we can't program our players to just output the lossless track no matter what, like in the...

With Blu the apparent victor, it's time to demand some changes....

It's sometimes funny to look at Blu Ray and see how if they only looked at grandpa LaserDisc, they could make us so happy. For instance: -You put a disc in, it starts, with sound trailers often too. -Resume play. -Uncompressed audio on just about everything except ancient titles. -No...

AFI 100 Years for 2007 is.... Movies (again)

This was quite an interesting list. I almost felt like they were going for "great" films rather than "significant" films. This would explain the exclusions of Jazz Singer, etc. It almost feels like Kane is one by default just because it's Kane. I love the film, see why it is so great, and for...

*** Official STAR WARS Saga (episodes I to VI) Discussion Thread: Part 4

Today was Star Wars day at my Family Video store. I started out by running the commentary track on Star Wars, segued into Empire of Dreams, and then finally, not A New Hope, but STAR WARS! Happy Birthday Star Wars. You changed...everything. "Get in there you big furry oaf. I don't care...

    Playstation 3 1.80 Firmware Update - DVD Upscaling to 1080p, 1080p/24hz support....

Thing is, I'm pretty sure my set shows 720p at 720p. It's not converting as far as I know. That, or it's native is 540p or something weird. Model is the KV34XBR970. AJG

    Playstation 3 1.80 Firmware Update - DVD Upscaling to 1080p, 1080p/24hz support....

Regarding the 720p output: I have a Sony XBR CRT that does a max of 1080i. Would I be better off putting it into 720p as well? I have noticed stations that broadcast in 720p do tend to look better on my display. I'm downloading as I type. Excited!! AJG

    Mission: Impossible-Blu Ray vs. LaserDisc

My system is modest, but calibrated nicely for all inputs. It's a night and day difference between the two formats. The BR sounds good, and is very clear. It felt obvious the BR was compressed less, however the low end impact just wasn't there. This is a Rydstrom mix and it didn't FEEL like it...

    Mission: Impossible-Blu Ray vs. LaserDisc

Yes, I know, kinda hard to compare these two formats, but I think the sound mix needs to be discussed. Sure, the picture on the Blu Ray blows the LaserDisc away, but the sound is "tame" by comparison. Just like the DVD before it, I'm dissapointed here. Anyone else still spinning those big discs...

DVD Review HTF REVIEW: The Good German

A little confused on the aspect ratio. According to the box, it's presented properly at 1.33:1. However, before the film starts, the pan and scan disclaimer comes on. I also checked out the film specifications at Film-Tech, and the theatrical ratio was 1.66:1 inside the 1.85:1 frame. Now I know...

A Few Words About A few words about... The Fugitive -- in High Definition

True Lies is screaming for a release on Blu Ray. Never bothered with the DVD. After all, my LaserDisc holds up well to the non anamorphic transfer that the lame DVD received. And oh, that AC-3 track still shakes the house. AJG

    Pre Ordering from Amazon

So I'm planning a party for Pirates of the Caribbean on Blu Ray, and was wondering if I pre order it them both from Amazon, when they would arrive. The party is planned for May 22, but I'm curious to know if Amazon ships the discs as soon as they get them or if they ship on the street date. I...

Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Anyone know if it'd even be possible for the PS3 to utilize the mutli out for a possible 6 channel analog out for DTS-MA and PCM 5.1? I don't have an HDMI receiver and really did not plan on upgrading soon, so this would be a wonderful option for high definition audio. I figure it would not be...

My Pioneer DVD Player died...need an interim player until HD/BR

Well, after loosing out on a Sony DVP-S7700 on ebay (tear) I ended up with an open item Samsung DVD-HD860 from Best Buy. So far, I like it but two things perturb me: I can't get rid of the angle logo on my Tomorrow Never Dies DVD when the multi angle comes up, and I don't like the picture...

My Pioneer DVD Player died...need an interim player until HD/BR

Hello all. I'm not quite ready to take the BR/HD plunge yet, but my trusty Pioneer died yesterday. I'm basically looking for an inexpensive replacement (preferably Pioneer) that will function with my 27" Sony. No upconversion, HDMI, etc. needed. Just some S-Video, digital outs, and a good image...

DVD Review HTF Review: Mission: Impossible Special Collector's Edition

Does this new DVD compare to the original Laserdisc's audio? I know the original DVD release couldn't hold a candle to it. It'd be nice to have anamorphic picture, but the AC3 track on the laserdisc is just, well, perfect. AJG

    King Kong (2005)

Our midnight show didn't do that well either, but it's easy to explain: many colleges have finals this week. I know Notre Dame, right up the street from our place, did. I know I would have chosen Kong back in college, most kids won't, especially if they can see it for a lot less the next morning...

Looking for a good match to the Pioneer 1014TX

I've been looking at some speakers to match up with my brother in law's Pioneer 1014TX. In this case, he'll be using them as part of a bar/mini home theatre, and it will be primarily used for tailgates, but some movies as well. I don't have the room dimensions, but it's an average size. He is...

    THX needs some feedback

Thanks for taking an active interest in our opinions THX. I'd definitely agree with more education on proper calibration. People spend thousands on great sets and they end up looking horrible because they think that is all it can do. Many folks, including manufacturers, need to step up and...

    A few Laserdisc player questions

Yeah, I've been in contact with Kurtis already. He's been extremely helpful thus far. As much as I'd like to go with something like the CLD-99 or higher on the totem pole, it just won't fit my budget. The CLD-79/704 is looking to be the best choice. The clones are a good deal, but the parts...

    A few Laserdisc player questions

Calling Rachel B! Looked through the LD primer, have done lots of research online, but now I'm getting confused when it comes to Pioneer-clones. How well do they stand up to their brethren? Namely, I've been looking at the Mitsu M-V7057, the Denon LA-3500, and possibly a Yammie 901. The Yamaha I...

In need of Laserdisc Player Service...help!

So, I'm watching Outbreak tonight and when my trusty Pioneer CLD-D406 goes to autoflip, the lense must have gotten jammed because there is nothing but a rumbling noise coming from the unit and it locked up. It eventually stopped, with an error message of "E0". I tried ejecting, I tried...

DVD Review *** Official HTF REVIEW & Discussion Thread: Star Wars Trilogy, pt. 1

Just finished A New Hope...I am in awe. I just Star Wars for the first time it seems. I'm completely wired, giddy, and just plain happy. I will argue that THIS version of a New Hope is the best one yet. Sure, it has its drawbacks (The Jabba Scene) but it still is just amazing to see it in such...

Passion of the Christ DVD -Full bitrate DTS?

I guess what I meant to describe was compression artifacting at the beginning of the film. It's definitely there during one of the dissolves. It looked a little likea Divx video file, which was odd for such a release with a decent bitrate. AJG
