Brian, Check out Pinnacle Studio. I've just done a project using the Sony DRU-500A DV->DVD. Did not play around with VHS. I've heard of people having problems with audio/video sync on analog inputs. There are some good deals going on Studio so maybe you can give it a try. = Kris

I have a Sony RPTV also, but with a Toshiba progressive scan DVD player. When I play the output in progressive mode, it shows "DTV format 480p" and in interlaced mode it shows "DTV format 480i". So I am pretty sure that your DVD player is still in interlaced mode. Look for a switch...
