    digital throughput

I "think" toslink is limited to 5 Mbs (transmitter and receiver limitation) and coax can handle up to 45 Mbs. This is where firewire and ethernet come in.

Myth or fact is upgrading from a Coaxial cable to a better one make a difference..

LOL! That' what a forums for...jump right in! Sure you can run like that. Any video cable will (well, it'd better be) 75 ohm coax.

Myth or fact is upgrading from a Coaxial cable to a better one make a difference..

its all about the bandwidth. So yes, a "better" coaxial cable can make the data more closely resemble what is output from the transmitter if the rated bandwidth is higher.

Why do mfg make 4 ohm speakers

Why do manufactuers make 4 ohm speakers? Because generally the design goals are "sound good and have a great crossover no matter what the nominal impedance winds up being. Don't let impedance be a design limiting factor." That's my take.

    Is SACD worth it?

dark side of the moon is just incredible. To me SACDs don't have that digital harshness of a CD. symbols and bass guitars sound more real, everything just has better tone. i guess to evaluate use a hybrid disk and listen to the CD layer and then the SACD layer. Also on your 555es make sure...

    Damaged tweeter? Need advice...

chris, You may want to keep your volume down just a tad as turning it up too loud is the number one reason for damaged tweeters.

    Damaged tweeter? Need advice...

You've already discovered the tweeter is faulty. You should be able to get it replaced. Good luck. Oh and yes the tweeter is "blown". If you can keep the faulty tweeter to play with after it is replaced you could take it apart and see the damage to the voice coil.

Opinions on Conversation Held about HT

Guess I'll chime in and be as polite as possible: For sure speakers and room are the biggest impact on sound. But if the weak link in the chain is your receiver then by all means it is the weakest link. I for one agree 100% with his comments (however rude they were). Let's put it this...

My friend insulted my Home Theater

Don't worry about it. You got your home theater for you, not to win friends and influence people. :) Let it go. And a true friend doesn't rip on another friends stuff. A true friend is happy for his buddy for enjoying his hobby. Case in point...my buddy blows ridiculous amounts of money on...

What TV has the best quality?

Allen, This is a very difficult question because all the different display technologies have their strengths and weakness. And even trying to discuss them can start a holy war. I don't think there is truly a "best quality" but generally CRTs "win". IMHO.

Little to no sub activity with stereo source material

your denon has separate speaker levels for the different modes. Try setting the volume (channel level on your reveiver) for the sub while in stereo mode. Try not to go to much over zero.

Toshiba 51HX83 RPTV: s-video vs component

Notice the trend in omiting bass & treble controls for DSP modes?

strange. I've never heard of a receiver that didn't have tone controls.

Can't resolve picture problems on my Mitsu 55". Any Ideas?

Make sure you have a progressive scan player. You shouldn't have any snow in the picture unless you possible have cable problems. Also use a good set of component cables (three cables). Your sharpness should stay in the middle, contrast below middle etc. Those are the quick and easy steps...

main speakers - bi wire - two amps?

the sunfire amp does a very good job at 4 and 2 ohms. 400 and 800 watts respectively I believe. It is one of the recommended amps for logans. What model speaker do you have? Some of the smaller ones aren't as demanding.

main speakers - bi wire - two amps?

Chu, When I was having amp/power problems it was very interesting. Real heavy bass would shut the amp down. But also a very strong snare or bells/female vocals. So depending on the music it could be the panel or the woofer. What is even funnier is you couldn't really hear any clipping, the...

main speakers - bi wire - two amps?

To tell you the truth it is the stator that needs the better/beefier amplifier due to such low impedance. Try either way and report back. BTW - you'd be amazed at what your logans will sound like when you give them enough power.

    Electrostatic Panel lifespan !??!?!?

The panels are very durable if taken care of. Smoking is bad for them. The membrane should be clear and not colored. I generally vacuum mine every few months. One good thing about logans is the support. What model are they? Be prepared to get a heavy duty amplifier to really make them sing.

Is there a device I can buy to convert 720p to 1080i?

Some TVs can't take a 720p input. Some xbox games are 720p and not 1080i. So this can present a problem. Unfortunately the only solution I know is one of the very expensive scalers and they start at 1000 bucks.

Using a coathanger as a digital cable

I don't really do fiber terminations. Haven't done one for about 10 years. That's for the grunts to handle. Nowadays the terminations are very easy to do well, not like the old score, cleave, cut, polish, sand, polish, sand, polish, etc. :) But sure, the tools are availible. Only problem I...

Using a coathanger as a digital cable

Yes Chu. I had planned on scanning a coathangar. Its the whole "motivation" thing. Looks like bruce has already done it for us. Now if somebody can point me to a place that sells toslink couplers (toslinking female/ST female) we can scan a typical home audio fiber cable.

***Official Digital Video Essentials Discussion Thread***

Coaxial Digital vs Optical Sound Cables

Interesting about the disk. I was running through the new Video Essentials disk tonight. The sweeps from 20 - 22K were interesting. I got freaked out thinking I'd lost some hearing at 18K because the tone got much softer if non existent. Then I used a rat shack SPL meter right up on the...
