A much cheaper way is over the air broadcast. I don't get HBO or HDNET in HD but I do get all my local channels and networks in DTV and quite a lot is in HD (all CBS evening lineup for example, many big sporting events, etc.).
And I pay no monthly fees :)
To do this you need an HD tuner like...
I have a Marantz RC5000 (very similar to Pronto) I'm no longer using. Comes with recharger base - worked great but now I've upgraded receiver to same brand as TV, their remotes work fine for me.
If anyone's interested, send e-mail to [email protected].
I'm in GA but could ship it.
Good thread. I think the Canon 100MC looks like a killer camcorder and one I'm interested in. Eugene - my wish list is about the same as yours, but I've realized it's gonna cost us $$$! Eric - I hadn't read about the motor noise problem, where did you read that? Thanks!
> Are you telling me all those set ups either don't sound good or are totally out of whack? Hey Rob - We know what we have and most people like what they have or don't know how much better it could be. I was very happy with my Sony DA90ESG 5.1 receiver for 4 years although I always thought...
Tommy - I have the Dazzle card/box and it works well but you'd better have a fast PC with a fast and huge amount of hard drive space. About a 3 minute video I 'preserved' from Hi8 camcorder tape took about 700MB on disk. Another option I'm considering is just buying a digital camcorder, which...
Tony as Kwang says, just set 4:3 display to 4:3 in the setup menu. The only possible problem (a bug at least on the one I have) is the positioning of 4:3 DVD menu prompts/cursors are still displayed as if the content were stretched out in full. Not a major problem by any means, but still a bug...
My Toshiba 4700 DVD player plays CD perfectly, and isn't expensive. I find it highly unlikely I'll 'wear out' the DVD player by playing CDs anymore than playing DVDs. Next people will be worried about trading off alleged (but unnecessary) 'burn-in' requirements vs. burn-out possibility!
Well I just tried Superbit Fifth Element on my 4700 and I could switch between interlaced and progressive with the remote. I'd just try your experiment again... it should work.
Hmmm... remote switch only works if physical switch on back is set to [p]rogressive. But if remote switch worked on one movie but not another without switching the physical switch that's strange. Maybe the battery is iffy in the remote?
Agreed Dave - I was ready to get new speakers before I heard how they could sound after MCACC! So the receiver SAVED me money... hehe - well I can tell the wife that! :D
Jonathan - you don't need a SPL meter because the MCACC auto-calibration feature of the receiver will do everything automatically, setting reference level accurately for EACH SPEAKER, along with EQ and delay. It's an awesome feature.
I am just more and more impressed with my 49TX as time goes on. It's hard to believe my ancient speakers now sound SO good.
Put in a surround concert DVD like Sting's All This Time, or Eagles' Hell Freezes Over and it'll blow you away.
Many 'critics' who say it doesn't have this or that...
Upconverting composite to component is not going to make it look any better. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. NTSC = Never Twice the Same Color.
Lyle - that doesn't make much sense to me since your TV has to take a WORSE signal (composite) and 'clean it up'. But if it works for you, that's all that counts.
Don't know if it has a comb filter but if you're buying this level of receiver, what composite sources are you using!? I feed my s-vhs vcr into it and it looks good (via component out).
What do you need SO many s-video inputs for!?
I'll try to list some I can think of:
cable
s-video vcr
game system
er, laserdisc?
er, er... could be a DVD player, but component's better
So that's 5 which is a stretch.
I have a 'flagship' receiver, but I only use 2 video inputs...
Shane - when you say clipping I think you mean it's auto-shutdown feature. A couple of people on the forums have said it has happened to them, but many more haven't had it happen. It's never happened to me and I've played some multi-channel stuff VERY loud (ref levels). Some have speculated...
OK - to answer Mike's question DIRECTLY...
If I ALREADY OWNED a 5800 and had a choice of the $800 upgrade or selling it and getting a 49TX, I'd do the upgrade. I don't have to learn new equipment, new remotes, new cabling, etc. I don't have to sell a receiver. The 5800 is a great receiver...
I have a 49TX. I was thinking I'd need to upgrade my speakers when I got it, but MCACC makes them sound SO MUCH BETTER I no longer feel the need to upgrade any time soon.
Many new 49TX owners who try MCACC say it sounds 'too bright' but I believe what's happening is they're just not used to...
Hmmm... confused a bit here. As I understand it you're going to have two sources: OTA HDTV and cable. The Panny tuner box will give you COMPONENT and other output signal types to send to your TV, which you connect to the appropriate input. For the cable signal, just connect that direct to the...
