what about rears? should the meter face back or face

i am eyeing the Kenwood HTB-504 home theatre in a
box system for $399. good reviews in consumer reports and
other places. the subject says it all, can i get a better
system in this price range by buying separates ?
here is what this system has:
kenwood VR-507 receiver/amp...
if you use the digital out (toslink) of the CD player
to connect to your receiver. then it woudn't matter
what player it is right ? since all the DAC stuff is
being done in the receiver...

i am in a similar situation - i have a an old (~10 yrs) jvc
