Hi All, I’m moving out of Boston and need to part ways with my home theater setup. Everything has been taken care of for a year. Audio components experienced only light use as I lived in an apartment building (had complaints about the SVS.) Local pickup preferred, though I do have all the...
Hi Guy,
I tried a simple (read:cheap) daylight (9 watt, 6500K) lamp last night. I also put up several sheets of white illustration board (remnants of early matte projects) behind the TV to reflect the light. The backlight level was between 5% and 10% on AVIA's backlight slide.
Eye-strain...
Hi All,
Are there any tweaks to improve (i.e. reduce) black level on direct view CRT TV's?
I've seen lots of tweaks for RPTV's, CRT projectors, and digital projectors. I haven't seen a lot of black level "tweaks" for direct view sets. Maybe there really isn't that much to tweak.
So far...
Hello Guy,
I've seen threads where people use some kind of attenuator on the Red lead of their component DVD inputs. Does this strategy have any more merit than turning down the red drive controls?
My thinking is that this is almost the same thing, you'd be attenuating all the red uniformly...
Again, thank you Guy for the immediate and insightful reply. I shall be using a lower contrast for squeeze mode.
With calibration done, it's time to continue tweaking... I just bought some illustration board and some Pritt On&Off reusable sticky tape to make some MATTES! :D

Hi Michael, You mean we aren't supposed to be driving at 5900 RPM?! Man, that explains all those blown gaskets. :) But seriously, thanks for the reply. I don't have a light meter handy, but is there another way to determine 20-30 ft-l without using one? (I.e. white paper and a match or...
Hello Guy!
How do you calibrate white level when the TV set has some sort of Average Picture Level (APL) limiter? (Note: The APL limited is only a guess, I don't know what else to call it.)
I bought a new 34" direct view Philips PowerVision TV. Using Avia's needle pulses and steps pattern...
My apologies for not having known this has already been discussed. I'm an HTF newbie.
Still, the arguments that the author makes are as valid today as there were last year. This should make some interesting read for those that missed it the last time.
And yes, I too am a "DVD geek!" :)

Bob, pardon my ignorance buy why shouldn't I "coil" my excess wire? Will just a couple of turns increase inductance that much? Or will it be more susceptible to interference (i.e. acting like an antena ?)
Either way, how should I store the extra length?

Ron,
I noticed that there is no variable phase knob on the new BASH amp, just a phase inversion toggle. Was this part of the cost saving compromise, or was it a sound quality (less delay) decision?

Ranga,
I too have my 20-39PC placed against a rear corner. It's actually only about 6 feet from the sweet spot (1 ft back, and 5+ feet to the side). Sometimes it is localizable, but only because of the things vibrating around it.

A little pricey, but something you might want to consider is the M&K Xenon line recently reviewed at Link Removed. They seem to like it.
They are about the size of a wine glass, so that should be right along your wife's alley. The only problem here is the price($1700 for LCR and surrounds)...
How would you design a "small enclosure" subwoofer worthy of carrying the SVS name? I know you mentioned in this thread that SVS isn't touching the market for small subs due to patent roadblocks, but what if there weren't any? Have you "dabbled" with small?
There seem to be quite a few HTF'ers...
ThuanVu,
This may be overly simplistic, but are the 16-46's wired in-phase? Also, you mentioned that you just moved the LFE from the Vel to the OM150. I'm unfamiliar with that amp, but if it doesn't "sum" the left and right channels and you are using just one (say the left) channel only...
How about running wire for somebody that brick walls with plain cement grouting? Does anybody have a suggestion? Or do you feel that glue gun fix will do it? Thanks.

I don't know if they're available in the U.S. but Pioneer has a few models that might interest you. Specifically, the Pioneer "Happy Tune" series (HX-33, HX-55, HX-77)
See them here, and select the Home Audio Product Type, New Style System Range, and the models above:

Ariel, Remember when RonS said SVS sent a sub over to someone in the Philippines? Well, that someone is me. If you'd like to hear my customs horror story just e-mail me.
I don't know if still has to be said, but SVS customer service is very responsive. They'll do what they can from their...
