I am in the process of building a new PC and have two questions:
1) I want the ability to connect my PC to my HT reciever (Yamaha RXV-620)....is that determined by the sound card I buy? I am currently looking at the Sound Blaster Live! series.
2) What is the best operating system out there...
I am curretnly running my system on a Yamaha RXV-620 with a Boston VR910 center channel, crappy old Kenwood mains (I know, I need to match), crappy Radio Shack surrounds, but no subwoofer. I want to at least add the .1 to my 5.1 before I upgrade my other speakers. My room is roughly 14 X 11...
I am looking to upgrade my mains to complement my Boston VR910 center....I had originally limited my search to the Boston Lynnfield series (950,965,975) because I had always heard that I had to timbre match with the center.....a salesman from a "high end" place locally said that the Paradigm...
thanks for the thorough response, I get it now....there is nothing on my reciever that would tell me if a specific show is being broadcast in dolby surround...I appreciate the explanation, I am relatively new to these forums (surprise, surprise) and am finding them a very useful resourse....this...
thanks, i'm still debating this....the 950s are available to me at a decent price (I think!) at $550.00, which is making this decision that much more difficult.....
Thanks, I will look for that indicator then....I take it I do not have to shut off any of my speakers (i.e. center, surrounds) to get the Pro Logic decoded?
When the "Dolby Digital" light is on, isn't that only refering to 5.1? That's what I get on 5.1 DVD'S (my cable provider doesn't carry a 5.1 signal)....I am just looking for Dolby Pro Logic, and that indicator stays on regardless of the program when I have that particular DSP turned on.
I have a Yamaha RXV-620 and was wondering about watching my cable (digital) in dolby pro logic. Doby Pro Logic Normal/Enhanced are part of the DSP programs, but do I need these activated to get a pro logic signal? If I understand correctly, many programs don't broadcast in pro logic, but when...
I am pricing new tower speakers, and am debating over the boston vr-950 vs. the 970....the main diffence between the two (other than price!) is the built in powered sub on the 970's. I don't currently have a sub and would be willing to spend the extra on the 970's if I could do without. My...
I am relatively new to the increasingly addictive world of home theater, and have just upgraded to digital cable. I have a few set up questions. My receiver is a Yamaha RX-V620, and the only coax audio in that i can find is marked "CD". Can I use that to connect my cable audio? Also, I am...
in terms of calibration, is anyone familiar with the section of the Terminator 2 disc that walks you through this? is this an acceptable means of calibration or a poor substitute for the equipment listed here?
I just recently purchased a Boston Acoustics VR910 center channel and, upon close inspection, found that there was sound coming from the center and right side of the speaker, but little or none coming from the left....I questioned a salesman where I bought it and he said that was b/c it...

i currently loop my cable through my VCR. since it is an old VCR (not hi-fi, no s-video), i'm not going to be able to get cable in dolby surround. right now i need to set my input on my reciever (yamaha rxv-620) to VCR1 to get any sound from cable...is there a way to bypass my VCR or do i need...
can anyone explain to me in layman's terms what these terms mean in reference to surround speakers? what are the advantages/disadvantages of each? BTW, I tried the search engine for this topic and it wasn't working......
is anyone here familiar with boston acoustics speakers? I am upgrading my speakers and am considering a center from them. I know they are based here in new england and i'm not sure what their national exposure is but if any has used/tested them in the past please let me know.
thanks for your help...I think i'll pick up the 620 as it sounds like it will be worth the investment. My TV is a bit older, so I won't be able to take advantage of the switching, but the other features sound great and i'll be happy when I upgrade to HDTV...
I am new to HT and am looking at two Yamaha receivers, the RXV-520 and the RXV-620. The 620 is listed with 20 more watts per channel (100 vs. 80). Besides that, the only other differences that I can see are that the 620 has on screen display, component video switching, and 5 channel stereo...
