Glass for Movie Poster or Picture Frame

I made a few picture frames a little while ago and after looking at glass vs plexi I ended up with glass. Some of the frames are small (8"x10") but one was poser sized. While it is a bit heavy, it looks very nice with a very flat piece of glass. I have some other posters with plexiglass and...

    Finishing raw MDF edges.....question?

I made some picture frames from some leftover speaker MDF and wanted to finish the edges, so I used primer. A fairly heavy coat of primer (Ace Hardware brand) and a lot of sanding gave great results.

I want to build a pair of Bookshelves...

When you say drivers do you mean drivers and crossovers? Crossovers are the thing I normally forgot about when I started (cost-wise) and finally realized that they add up quick. I would definitely go with a popular design or a popular kit. I have basic measuring equipment and I still haven't...

    Granite for flexy?

What about something like Corian? I have a friend whose dad works with the stuff all day and at their house they have Corian countertops, signs made of Corian, and even some speaker boxes from Corian in his brother's truck. Not sure how the cost is compared to granite, but I'd imagine it has to...

    using pro-audio amps

I've been using a Crest VS900 in my system for a while and it works great. I'm driving it with an Outlaw 1050 and it has plenty of power for the AV15 (maybe too much...). I really like the build quality and reliability of pro equipment and would recommend trying a pro amp. I wouldn't suggest the...

First Home DIY Subwoofer - questions

I personally would recommend the AV15. I just finished a 5 cu ft ported (to 23 hz i think) and its great. I used 2 4" ports and noise is not a problem at all. I posted a pic in the AV15 enclosures thread if you want to see it (its still MDF for now). The AV15 is a much better deal than the AV12...

    I am starting a Thread for the Stryke AV12 & AV15 enclosures

Build a front panel out of 3/4" MDF with speaker cutouts to the outside diameter then attach it to your box, then they'll be flush mounted perfectly (look at my pic above). --Ryan

Buying some 3D rendering software..need advice

Dave, I got that email too but haven't heard anything back. If we get together in a month or so we'll have finished our new center channel and probably surrounds. Our sub is almost done (box is done, but not finished) but its too big/heavy to bring anywhere (AV15, 5.5 cu ft total). We have...

Buying some 3D rendering software..need advice

In the solid tools menu in Rhino there is a fillet edge button that does a nice job on rounding over edges. For chamfering you might want to use the surface tools chamfer, where you select the two surfaces you want chamfered (ala AutoCAD). Good luck! --Ryan

    I am starting a Thread for the Stryke AV12 & AV15 enclosures

Here's the box we built (not finished yet) for AV15. It's around 5.5 cu ft tuned to 23 Hz (I think, its somewhere around there). It sounds great and can play pretty loud. We're powering it with a Crest VS900 (with a new quiet fan) and the amp definitely has headroom (probably for another AV15!)...

Buying some 3D rendering software..need advice

Rhino and AutoCAD are great choices, but it depends on what you really need it for. If you're looking for photo-realistic renderings, then 3D Studio Max is probably the best choice. For more technical drawing, AutoCAD or Rhino will probably be better. If you almost exclusively need 3D, I'd say...

    Most quietest Pro amp?

I just recently got a used Crest VS900 amp for our new AV15 (and of course leave room to power more... :) ) and the stock fan was incredibly loud. I went down to the local electronics store and found a couple 120x120x38mm 115V fans (that this amp takes) and hooked them up to their power supply...

    What's your AV-15 alignment???

Thanks Steve. The covering will most likely be a laminate since its (relatively) cheap, easy to do, very durable, and looks nice. A nice veneer would be ideal, but given the extra work, cost, and difficulty the laminate wins. I'll post pics when it's finished and listening impressions. --Ryan

    What's your AV-15 alignment???

Ours came in the other day. Here are some pics: We ran a 20 Hz sine wave through it for this, look how far its moving!!! Here's a closeup of the cone moving, look how deep that blur is! This is the box, all clamped up and the ports were being held in place. We'll be ready to...

    My experience with Adire audio.

I've had great luck with them too! I visited them to pick up a Shiva right around the time the Tempests just came in (he even opened one up and showed me!). I was really happy with the service I got and I saw him at CES this year and saw he hasn't changed. His business is a rare one. --Ryan

Quick AV-15 question beforre it goes off sale

I have had no problems with getting a hold of John, normally it just takes a couple days. He sends an automated email when you email him warning that it might take a while for him to answer emails because he is busy. I've also talked to him on the phone and he sounds like a very busy guy. As far...

Anyone used Image Dynamics IDQ12 in a home?

My friend just upgraded his car stereo and now has 2 12" Image Dynamics IDQ (original, not v.2) subs and is considering using them for HT next year when we get a house. In Unibox they plot pretty well, but someone had told him that they have weak motors so aren't good for HT. In Unibox I was...

Tempest coffee table sub - any suggestions?

Greg, I haven't planned out the bracing yet, but still need to do something. It's going to be a while until I build it (a few months probably) but I just wanted to see what kinds of things I should take into account. Bryan, what do you mean use sonotube instead? For the port (i.e. small...

Tempest coffee table sub - any suggestions?

Thanks to all for the comments. The program I drew them in is called Rhino 3D, www.rhino3d.com has a demo which is very nice. Jack, thanks for the suggestion about room placement, I might consider doing a square endtable type sub now similar to the one posted by Kyle (thanks for that link...

Tempest coffee table sub - any suggestions?

Wow, thanks for the link. That will really come in handy during this design process. I drew up the preliminary plans for this box/table and have generated a few pics of what it *could* look like. This is the basic design, with sub on the bottom and you can see the ports on the side. This...

Tempest coffee table sub - any suggestions?

Oh yeah, forgot to add: how close can I put a port to the cabinet wall? I was wondering this and how it would change the tuning if too close. Thanks!

Tempest coffee table sub - any suggestions?

I'm working on a design for a sub for my house that I'm moving into and would like to build a coffee table sub with a Tempest. I think the Tempest would be enough output and my only worry is building a table that is sturdy and won't shake during loud/low bass hits. I drew up a preliminary...

Raising Arizona, did anyone else notice this?

I was watching Raising Arizona and couldn't help but notice the door of the bathroom. It had both OPE and POE spray painted on it. This appeared to me as an homage to Dr. Strangelove by the Coen brothers (purity of essence and the code were represented). Did anyone else notice this? Does...

Oops! I told Dad I don't like his Bose

I made a bigger mistake methinks :) I was working at a kettle corn booth at this charity fundraiser thing and there were a few people around me talking (not customers, just friends of my boss and such). One of them asked what I was interested in and what I wanted to do after college, so I told...

The "designing the perfect subwoofer driver" thread...

I'm drooling just reading this thread! While I can't comment on the preliminary specs, due to lack of experience, they seem to look really good. I can only really comment on the names. The problems I see with X-max and Epicenter is that there are already other audio products with those names...

    Good sounding cheap receiver?

Thanks for all the replies! I'm definitely going to look into the Yamaha a little more, although (kind of arbitrary) I don't like the look of the panel that hangs down in the middle. I'll have to see one in person to verify those feelings though :) I will also have to look into the Denon a...
