I had the opportunity to visit my local FNAC store (#1 store chain in France for CD, DVD and books). I looked at this DVD : it is packaged in a "digipack" box. I had confirmation of the lack of subtitles and sountracks other than French...
:frowning: Didier.
"Le Doulos" was reissued on DVD in France in October 2002 (R2). I have seen comments on some French sites which say than the black and white transfer is slightly better than the previous one, but the is sound is still French mono only, and there are no subtiltles at all. Bad news for those who...
Reading all this, I feel how lucky we are in Europe, and particularly in France : most DVD are in OAR and 16/9 ! I hope it will last.
But here letterboxing has been commonplace for years, including on main 3/4 TV channels.
Didier.
Timecop was released in region 2 PAL in France back in 1999 : http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=1464
It is still available. It features a DD 5.1 english soundtrack (among others) and original 2.35 aspect ratio letterboxed in anamorphic 16/9.
I have no informations about the quality of...
According to the french site "DVDrama" : http://www.dvdrama.net/fiche.php3?2167 , the french release of "Conan the Barbarian" features both french and english soundtracks in DD 5.1, the english one is rated as excellent.
Image is also rated excellent with its original 2.35 aspect ratio in 16/9...
In France you might consider AMELIE (Title in France : "Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain"), BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF (Tiltle in France : "Le pacte des loups") and VIDOCQ (to be released on March 20th).
These DVD have not been released in North America yet, the French (zone 2 Pal) releases...
Welcome to France
If you take a walk on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, you will find here two shops having a very wide choice of French Zone 2 DVDs : FNAC and VIRGIN (they also have imported Zone 1 DVDs, but this is of course of no interest for you !).
Being from Quebec I suppose that you are...
The french release (Zone 2 / Pal) also contains 2 discs, one with the bootleg cut, and the other one with the theater cut. English soundtracks on both are in DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1, while the french soundtrack is DD 5.1 only.
The french title is "Presque Célèbre". According to the french DVD site...
Look here for a review (in french) of the French R2 release of "Apocalypse Now Redux" : http://www.dvdrama.net/fiche.php3?2192
Aspect ratio is 2.0
Didier.
You may find here a review of the French R2 release of "Apocalypse Now Redux" (if you understand French) : http://www.dvdrama.net/fiche.php3?2192
According to this review, the aspect ratio on the DVD is 2.0
Didier.
"Conan the destroyer" will be released in France on March 6th (the french title is "Conan le destructeur").
The french R2 DVD release will have a Dolby Digital 5.1 english soundtrack (the french soundtrack is mono).

Didier.
I confirm that there is no english subtitles on the french R2 realease of "Le pacte des loups" (only french subtiles intended for hearing impaired), so if you don't understand french, you might have to wait for UK or US releases.
The French release can be ordered online from :

In the early days of DVD, a few French DVD releases were cut the same as the U-K releases. This was heavily criticized here, and now nearly all French DVD releases are totally uncunt.
Didier.
The technical quality of the Amelie DVD is very good, some compression defaults can be noticed on a very few sequences, but overall it is excellent.
Please notice that the special limited edition in a metal case which was issued in December is likely difficult to get now, but the cheaper...
U-K DVDs, like other Western Europe DVDs (France, Germany, etc...) are region 2 PAL (625 lines, 25fps), while US DVDs are region 1 NTSC (525 lines, 30 fps).
Most DVD players sold in Western Europe can play both PAL and NTSC, while most of those sold in North America are NTSC only.
Of course...
Yes the metal box is of the same model as the one for "Teminator 2" ultimate edition (French R2/PAL). You can also get both "Total Recall UE" and "Terminator 2 UE" in a single package offer.
Didier.
The new relase of "Total Recall" in France (R2/PAL) is a two discs set in a metal box. First disc contains the film, and the second one contains bonus.
According to a critic on the French DVDrama site, the image quality is better than previous R1/NTSC releases, altough not of the highest...
Dave, I am pleased to see that there are people who show interest for French films, so I try to help when I can.
In the case of "Le Samouraï", as I have been told that it was delayed, not cancelled, there is still hope !
The problem with on-line resellers is that they don't always update their...
I called TF1 Video, and was told that "Le Samouraï" was first delayed in November, and is now delayed again with no know date.
You will have to be patient...
Didier.
I wrote earlier that "The Dancer" have had limited success in France. I have checked the Box Ofice records in France. "The Dancer" has made only 326.267 admissions (Box Office records are counted in France with admission numbers, not in $...).
To be compared with other Luc Besson's produced...
"The Dancer" is indeed a french film, produced by Luc Besson and directed by Frédéric Garson (who worked earlier as Luc Besson assistant).
But like most Besson's films, it was certainly shot in english.
This film had limited success in France, and the DVD release came rather unnoticed. I have...
I finally managed to get some infos from MK2 (France) :
The five DVD box for Truffaut's "Antoine Doinel" will have english subtitles on all films, but not on the Bonus DVD. Release date is now sheduled beginning of November 2001.
The three DVD fox for Kielowski's "Three colors" will have...
The 5th DVD is a bonus DVD. I don't know the detailed content, but it is likely to be interviews, deleted scenes (the usual stuff). There should be also short films that Truffaut made before "The 400 blows".
Week-end is starting here... So about "The three colors" I'll try to get the infos next...
I just called MK2 in Paris, I had confirmation that all Truffaut films DVD will have english subtitles.
The "les aventures d'Antoine Doinel" box will contain 5 DVD. 4 films : "Les 400 coups" (The 400 blows), "Baisers volés" (Stolen kisses), "Domicile conjugal" (Bed & board) and "L'amour en...
French DVD are generally very good (France is the biggest market for DVD in Western Europe, ahead of Germany and U-K).
But I don't know any film called "DON'T LOOK NOW".
