A painted black baffle with veneer on the rest of the cabinet is attractive and easy to do. I finished my speaker projects this way for many years. Lately, though I've been veneering all sides. I think it is actually a little easier since it eliminates the paint step. One hint... I've found...
Todd, First the bad news: 14" x 48" is going to be difficult to find in single pieces. Solid lumber is sold in "random widths and lengths" with widths usually varying from 5" to 10" (length won't be a problem). Beyond that, you'll probably need to edge-glue multiple pieces. If you look closely...
Wow. Thanks Al and Thomas for your useful, contrasting, inputs. I am reminded why I was attracted to this forum several years ago. Yes, Thomas, I was thinking about the MTM design with the M8. And yes, I realize that the size and parts count of the crossover is driven by "massively parallel"...
Thanks Stuart. I also forgot to mention that in my search I (re)discovered the A/V-3. It looks like these are a solid design with a strong following. I was also intrigued by the M8n variants that ThomasW has discussed here and on other boards - I've just never seen a two way crossover with that...
I've been away from the boards for a while - enjoying my theater rather than tinkering with it (blasphemy!) My latest project is a pair of speakers for my dad. His is a two-channel only system and he'd prefer not to have a subwoofer. So I'm looking for some slim floorstanders with decent...
A couple of things to consider. If removing the amp creates a "hole" in the cabinet, then you'll need to plug it, or the system tuning will be affected. Second, many commercial subs use some form of EQ built into the amp. If you buy a generic plate amp or pro amp, you won't get this. You'll need...
I disagree that car audio can't sound as good as the best home audio. It can. It's just not practical. Take a look at a typical high-end home system (2-channel). You've got, say, $50K worth of pseudo-mass-produced gear (because home environments are generally pretty much the same). Heck...
Jose, I think he's running a conventional mono sub. The extra midbass drivers he's talking about would be run off of a pair of the surround outputs and high passed in the receiver like any "small" surrounds. So with a outboard passive low pass, it should work. Might have a response hump in the...
It sounds like what you are trying to do is use a couple of unused channels of your receiver to drive these "midbass" woofers. If your little P17WJs are having trouble producing high-level bass in the 60-150 Hz region why don't you just raise the sub crossover frequency? The problem with...
Paul, As they say... "Loud is beautiful, if it's clean" When I'm seriously listening, it's usually pretty loud - something like -14dB to -9dB. It takes decent amplifiers and speakers to stay clean at Stentorian levels. Cheaper amplifiers especially tend to get brittle-sounding when pushed. I...
Sorry that you might have some extra work ahead of you, Dave. But at least you caught it before texture and paint :emoji_thumbsup: My rule of thumb when building a theater is: prewire everything! 7 channels of speakers (at least) Conduit to PJ Power to PJ Power and screen trigger for...
DD movie: DD Logic 7 film DTS movie: DTS Logic 7 film DD music/concert: DD Logic 7 music DTS music/concert: DTS Logic 7 music Stereo: 2-channel Other than that, I'm with Dean S: I haven't even tried the 40 or so other sound field modes on my Lexicon MC-12!
drobbins, Welcome and good luck on your project 1. There are no s-video to composite adapters that I know of. Can you run the s-video straight from your DVD to the projector? This could be a simple solution if you use the projector for DVDs almost exclusively (like I do). Otherwise, I would...
No. THis won't cause problems. The woofs are in phase by definition (if wired correctly). The will just "pressurize" the trunk - and car - twice as much as a single driver. Now, if they were incorrectly wired out of phase, then yes, you would suffer huge cancellation. And the difference in...
I'm with Mr. Hoffman... If you don't really need more power, the sonic difference will be minor. Now, if you plan to eventually upgrade to a pre-pro to round out the "separates" system, then it makes sense.
Yup. For what you're talking about you need a switch. And make sure that it is a switch made for this purpose or is a generic "break before make" type. You don't want the outputs of the two amps connected together, even for an instant. Unfortunately, I'm not sure exactly where to buy such a...
So, you want to use your computer as a "jukebox" that you can control from your TV location. Interesting. It is possible (heck, anything is possible). Do you have surround sound capability in your computer, i.e. 5.1 soundcard? If not, you will be limited to stereo. The first problem will...
The "top end" of the JBL line Synthesis is very high-end indeed. Synthesis One is over $100K I think, but you get all of the electronics (mostly re-badged Lexicon - very nice) and a team to come to your home and set it up. ;)
Very nice Brian. I fear that this thread is pushing me over the edge to subwoofer "upgrade-itis". Jack made an interesting statement at the beginning:
So it seems that the Tumult in 4 cubic feet doesn't need the LT option on the ADA amp. If I am looking at the Tumult spreadsheet...
In my opinion, there are only two reasons to get video switching in a receiver: 1. Your TV doesn't have enough video inputs or 2. You like the convenience of using the receiver remote to change video inputs automatically (which, by the way, you can also accomplish with a universal remote). If...
A few more details and corrections: MOSFET: Wayde got it right. MOSFETs are voltage-controlled transistors rather than current-controlled like conventional (bipolar) transistors. A number of amplifier brands use MOSFETs. Not necessarily "better" or "worse" than bipolar devices, although they...
Very good question. You have an advantage in that you've already found a good spot for the sub. If you are not changing room dimensions, you probably won't be far off. I did a compromise and ran sub cables to opposite corners of the room, front left and rear right. As it turns out, I'm using...
It sounds like it's already "been converted to a room" so you would deal with it just like any other room. One specific concern would be heating and cooling. Typically carports don't have these. They are a requirement for a theater. You might want to do searches on specific topics like "HVAC"...
Dunno. Looks like it's brand new. If Nelson Pass were still running the company I'd say you couldn't go wrong. I haven't heard any of their newer stuff, though. Nelson hangs out at diyaudio.com he might be keeping tabs on what his old company is doing...
Glad that you're pleased. Still, I think buying speakers without listening to them is risky. It's a bit hard to tell from the pictures on their website, but it looks like they may be using Vifa drivers (definitely not "white van" material). However, their site is dangerously scarce with...
Pretty much any type of wire will work for a low-voltage screen trigger. Two conductors are all that is required. I used doorbell wire - 20-22 gauge I think. You could use cheap 20-24 ga speaker wire if you have some lying around (It's not any good as speaker wire :D )
Well,if you want the best, try these WBT toplines: Parts Express carries a whole line of RCA connectors, ranging in price from pennies to these babies at about $30 each.
Not a stupid question at all. If it's a sealed sub with two drivers in an common enclosure, you're right, it's very difficult to tell which driver is bad. It should, however, be pretty obvious that something is wrong by reduction in overall output, tendency to "bottom", poor "flabby" or "boomy"...
