Actually, the intent of the tumble was to rough him up, not kill him. Afterwards, battered and bleeding, but very much alive, he is told in no uncertain terms that he will receive this treatment every time the police have to expel him from L.A. The "Hat Squad" then drives off, leaving the...
There is a piece of legislation called The Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 that permits some kinds of copying from CD. I'm not sure exactly which. In Canada, it is now legal to make copies of audio recordings for personal use. To compensate the music industry for any lost revenues, fees are...
Get a Hitachi 51F500; anamorphic and non-anamorphic look pretty much alike. :) I used to have problems like you describe, until I switched to a home theater PC. Now, non-anamorphic just means a somewhat softer image. RD

I read in The Wall Street Journal some years back that competition from Circuit City and Divx spurred Best Buy and Toshiba to put a $300 DVD player on the market in time for Christmas 1998, well before experts thought that would be feasible. The Divx competition also spurred video renters to...
I wrote an article for Tech TV, but that's the extent of it. If I knew there was money in a book, I'd consider putting one together. :) As for the cheap player, you should be able to find one on eBay. It won't play the bonus features on the Amistad disc, though (registration is required)...
Used copies can be had on LD. I wonder if Fox has any plans to release it to DVD? Considering all the fluff that's been released to DVD in the five years since Divx was pulled, you'd think that this worthy and memorable title could have been given at least a bare-bones release. RD
There was a sell-through variant of Divx called DivxGold, but no DivxGold discs were ever marketed to the public. One title (Mulan) was prepared for a DivxGold release, and in fact was ready for mass replication, but Divx management (not Disney) ruled against releasing it for fear of starting a...
High Art is slated for a summer release, while Soldier's Daughter has been released to R1 DVD in the past, but is now out of print (Amazon has 34 used copies, if you want one). RD
Yes, it's true that one Divx title (Madigan) sold less than 20 copies (nine, to be exact), and Alice sold only 50. In contrast, a number of hot new releases of the day had had five-figure sales on Divx by early June 1999, including The Waterboy (32,125), There's Something About Mary (45,933)...
I started a thread near the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' coming to America, posing the question as to why this title hadn't been released. Glad that my question has finally been answered. :)
FYI I think it is against the Forum rules to be posting eBay links. That being said, it's good to know that my $32.50 Faces set is now worth about three times that. :)
Perhaps new technology now available will change that. For example, there is a company in New York which is now marketing a process that turns carbon-based materials (including plastics) into crude oil. In any event, the garbage volume that disposable discs would amount to isn't all that...
If so, it's their right to do so (and forego sell-through revenue amd a hit to their bottom line). Since their goal is to maximize profits, however, it's a fair bet to say that they won't. They know very well that if they leave money on the table, there are other studios that will snatch it up...
And why would they do this? Because they did it with Divx? That comparison doesn't hold water, because the home video market then (very rental-centric) was very different from what it is today.
So what exactly is the big deal about these things? If people don't like them, then they don't have to buy them (and I won't be buying them). End of story. Unless I'm missing something, the studios have the right to distribute their copyrighted works as they see fit.
I use dish soap, tepid water and a Kleenex with a gentle swirling motion. Once done, I rinse the disc off under the tap, using a thin stream of tepid water. Any drops remaining I wick up with the corner of a paper towel. This process results in very nicely cleaned surfaces that don't show...
My copy of Death in Venice has a damaged case. Had it been packaged in a standard keepcase, there would be no problem, but because a snapper is involved, there's nothing I can do to repair it, and my collectible disc thus suffers a permanent loss in value. It's lamentable that Warner insists...
Recently, the 40th anniversary of the groundbreaking arrival of the Beatles in America generated a considerable stir in the media. Does anyone know if this has given any impetus to a DVD release of I Wanna Hold Your Hand, the 1978 Zemickis/Gale comedy concerning the misadventures of a group...
