Greetings -
I'm new to this forum so please forgive my beginners mentality...
I have the 2 pieces of equipment listed above, both new.
Viewing 16:9 DVDs presents no problem.
However, when I try to play a 4:3 DVD (Disney's "Treasure Island", for example) the size of the screen shown on the TV...
So excuse me for pointing this out, but what about all the blatant statements you've made with "no links, no nothing" and no specific references to printed material? The first place I read this was Britannica.com just fyi... there are plenty more if one takes the time. It always cracks me...
Don't want to get into an argument about this, but there appear to be quite a few citations available on the net which refer to his being blacklisted... Also, if Kubrick (along with Kirk Douglas, of course, who is credited with hiring Trumbo) was of a mind to work with Dalton Trumbo on...
For anyone interested, FLIX has it listed as showing several times this month... Agreed: the picture quality (let alone the framing) on the OOP DVD is really quite bad. That's why I was pleasantly suprised to see it looking so damn good last night! Other than the continual resurrection...
Thread resurrection/bump: Fyi to all/anyone, "Farewell" showed up on FLIX on my digital cable last night (Monday, 9/1/08) at 10:25pm. Started watching... and lo and behold it was in it's OAR in a print/transfer that looked waaaaay better than the square/flat DVD of a few years back (which...
Slight thread resurrection... So anyone have any news at all? We've been hearing about it for quite a while, and maybe with BR:The Final Cut now out and about... maybe... just maybe...?
For what it is worth (maybe not a lot), Stallone is in it, too: he plays the guy with eyes for Frances Amthor's daughter. Despite his age at the time, Mitchum is the definitive Marlowe, IMHO. (I've always thought someone missed the boat big-time by not having Mitchum do it right around the...
Am I the only one who thinks this film more than deserves, at the very least, to be re-issued on DVD with a brand new transfer (restoration, possibly?) in OAR...? Just curious to see what others think.
On the theory that the squeaky wheel gets the grease, another bump/request for a DVD release of "the best Tarzan movie that isn't a Tarzan movie" (at least, that's one of the ways I've always thought about it). Anyone who hasn't seen this fine film is missing out on an excellent piece of...
Thread resurrection: Anyone have any news bits "if/when DVD release" on Cornel Wilde's superior, harrowing African adventure? Please... anyone? This is definitely something of a lost gem.
Is this stretching the definition of "western" too far?: How about Anthony Mann's 1951 "The Tall Target" with Dick Powell as a gov't agent assigned to protect Abraham Lincoln on his train trip to be inaugurated. Powell's character's name: John Kennedy. Fine performances by Ruby Dee...
A thoroughly enjoyable disc/film!
Recommended to anyone with a penchant for Lovecraft & the Cthulhu Mythos, and for those who dig low-budget films done well...
JMHO
In a heartbeat, I would buy a Lorre set, or individually each of the films Jeffery mentioned... the film-on-DVD world is much poorer for not having a lot more of Lorre's work available. He is known, I suppose, for being a "character actor"... probably because that's how the studios...
Mike - just curious: where in sw UK are you located? I've been to England 5 times in the last 7 years, and most of the time was spent in the southwest... gorgeous!!! Thanks! Scott
Definitely!!!!!!! "THE NAKED PREY" done OAR on DVD would be a no-brainer/automatic purchase for me!!!!! RE: Cornel Wilde, how's about "ROAD HOUSE" w. Ida Lupino and Richard Widmark???
Kevin M, re: your comment on the Blade Runner original theatrical trailer - That's the one! Stunning trailer, esp. for the time and the fact that no one had any idea what to expect from this film... I also recall that the theatrical trailer for "Bram Stoker's Dracula" was an...
What about "All at Sea"? AKA "Barnacle Bill" (?!), it is one of my absolute favorite Guinness films of all time - I was fortunate enough to tape it from TCM last month, but let's have a DVD... I absolutely love the Ealing comedies, so the new set will be a no-brainer" purchase for me...
Jason, I have to agree with you about the "Dark City" trailer... with this qualifier: it ties for Best Trailer Ever with the MIA original theatrical trailer for "Blade Runner", which to my knowledge has not been seen since first shown way back when - I recall it took my breath away, and...
Brad, I agree: Brainstorm is a very underrated and seemingly/unfortunately forgotten science fiction film, esp. when seen as Trumbull originally intended - the "regular" parts of the film in seeming "normal" widescreen 35mm (with stereo sound, I believe); then, when showing the...
Dark City - knew nothing about it except for the incredible trailer - completely blew my mind, what's left of it; The Naked Prey - Cornel Wilde's African survival opus; Blade Runner Work Print - a complete suprise, as the "Original Release" was what was advertised - turns out the...
Hi, Ed!
Sammon's book gives an accurate description, but obviously it's not the same as actually experiencing the WP...
Basically, everything about it caught my eye, but this is what I recall right now, today, in no particular order (remember, this was a few years back):
the opening credits...
Just chiming in belatedly on Charlie's 7/18 post, re: BR in 70mm...
When originally released, the film was indeed shown in 70mm on opening day & through the rest of it's run here in Seattle at The Cinerama - I saw it 3 times that week (skipped work to do so).
It was shown again in 70mm a few...
Ken, I'm with you! Mitchum is my favorite Marlowe. In that film he has the tired cynicism that an aging Marlowe would have... too bad he didn't also get to play Marlowe earlier in his (Mitchum's) career. Question to all: what is the OAR of "Farewell, My Lovely"? I have the...

JMHO, but I was disappointed with the visual "appearance" of the "Chinatown" DVD picture: very "soft" looking, not at all like I remember in theaters when the film first came out. I read several reviews on the DVD, none of whom made any mention of this - in fact, most praised the...
