"The "16:9 mode with vertical compression" on the 2001 models only works with a 1080i source (HDTV) not 480i or 480p.
This year's models are supposed to upconvert 480i and 480p sources to 540p, which will then play in the 16:9 mode (this still has to be confirmed though)."
Sorry for bring...
I am pretty sure about the Avia black level setting. I'm using Pioneer 535k dvd player. But I don't think it’s the dvd playback problem solely because the cable programmes too display a lack of detail for dark scene or object.

I got exactly the same darkness problem like your friend with my Sony RPTV. Did your friend manage to fix his TV darkness problem?
I used Avia to calibrate but the problem persists. I even up the brightness but it didn't make much difference. Is it because the TV is faulty in the first place?
What do vertical compression really do to a 4:3 TV? What is the difference from watching a DVD in letterbox mode and vertical compression mode? Pls enlighten me. Thanks.
Thanks for the advice guys.
I am supposed to get my Thomson 44" 2 months ago! But till now, the dealer told me the shipment is to be delayed and they couldn't give me a definite delivery date!
I did call Thomson HQ in Spore. The sales person told me its true that the 44" TV has no more...
Which of the following TV you think is the best?
1. Samsung SP54J8HF 54" RPTVhttp://www.samsung.com.sg/tv/tantus...s/sp54j8hf.html

Boy... sounds discouraging, seems like the TV screen is so reflective to light, make day watching not desirable. But thanks for your analysis. I will let you know once my TV arrive. :)
Hi Yue-Keen,
I'm also bought the 44" Thomson from Thong Sheng at Bt Merah. But according to them the shipment is delayed till next month 15/07/01.
Where you bought the TV from? So fortunate can get it so soon. Let me know your opinion on the TV when you get it. :)
