Need Everything, $5K, What to buy?

Hi - I need a whole new HT setup for a newly renovated room. Basement area with no windows. I'm leaning towards a Panasonic 65" plasma so that leaves around $3,000 for receiver, 5.1 speaker setup, blu-ray, Tivo. Naturally, I wouldn't mind spending less. I haven't bought any new gear...

Will Apple ever make a "normal" Mac?

Wait. A Mac user sends jpgs and the Windows machine magically coverts them to GIFs and corrupts them and thats a Mac problem? I've worked in a Mac/Windows world for 17 years and have never seen that.

Networking a Mac and a PC

I'm assuming you have a shared folder or volume on the PC. If you do, then on the mac, you click the menu item "Go > Connect to Server" and type in: smb://IP.of.the.PC/SharedFolderName/ and type in the PC username and password. Conversely, you can turn on Windows Sharing on the mac by...

What are the real elements that separate a MAC from a PC?

I gotcha. I wouldn't say that's a business need however. That's more a specialized need. You might want to check out MailTemplate for Apple Mail http://mailtemplate.mactank.com/

What are the real elements that separate a MAC from a PC?

Question - What exactly does Outlook do that makes it for "business use." Sorry, but this comment was funny considering all the "business" people I know who use Macs. I saw a reference to "stationary" and "fonts." I'm at a loss.

I respectfully disagree. I much prefer Safari over Firefox.

Will Apple ever make a "normal" Mac?

Yep. I was just thinking the other day that the affinity for "upgrading" computers is slowly dying off. Upgrading used to be important when computers cost $2500. Apple makes it easy to updgrade the RAM and add external peripherals. In the end, thats what consumers need.

What are the real elements that separate a MAC from a PC?

Why can't you? I use a MacBook Pro which can dual boot Windows XP and MacOS X. The only thing I can see is that if you work in IT and need a serial port to work with switches or something.

Will Apple ever make a "normal" Mac?

I'm not sure what is wrong with the iMacs? 1.83GHz, 2.0GHz, 2.16GHz or 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, lots of ram and drive space, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT How is this not a mid level machine? I use a $3000 MacPro at work but have a 20" iMac at home.

Soooooo..... Does anyone have any news at all on Lost Highway? It remains the only DVD I want at this point.

Brian Wilson Present SMiLE: The DVD

Wow. I see no mention of this DVD. If I missed it, I apologize. Just came out this week. If you are a Brian Wilson fan, run out and get this DVD today. I only managed to get through Disc 1 so far. It contains that terrific documentary Beautiful Dreamer. Its an excellent story of Wilson and...

Anybody using KONFABULATOR? NOW FREE! Read Post #19

I'll be buying Tiger as well. And I'm not saying what Apple does is illegal. Just slimy. Why not "buy" the product ... use some of the 6 billion they have in the bank. I'm sure either developer would have taken a paltry sum.

Have Circuit City stores finally given up on SACD?

Sony should have put SACD support in every DVD player they produced above the most basic models. I'm not sure what hardware manufacturers would have an incentive to build in DVDA support however. One issue is hardware. Its tough to find players unless you are looking specifically for...

Have Circuit City stores finally given up on SACD?

Yes, I'm afraid the writing is on the wall. Best Buy in my area set up a dedicated DVDA and SACD section about a year ago. I thought this was a good thing. When I go into that store (rarely) they have the same discs as the last time but you can tell the stock is dwindling and its not being...

Anybody using KONFABULATOR? NOW FREE! Read Post #19

Konfabulator has been out for at least a year on MacOS X. Its so successful that Apple actually ripped this guy off and incorporated it into OS X 10.4. They did the same thing to the Watson developer. No compensation just blatant reverse engineering.

    NFL Season 2004-2005 Thread

They covered the spread and could have won the game. They were greatly underestimated by all the so-called experts and their picks. Hats off to the Eagles and especially TO for a great effort.

Remember, the Eagles are coming back next year with the same squad and a healthy TO. I don't see anyone measuring up in the NFC AND the Eagles are LOADED in the draft. Hopefully, this is the beginning of an EAGLE dynasty. E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!

    NFL Season 2004-2005 Thread

Who is going to cover Westbrook? A linebacker? Its not going to happen. The Patriots will have to put a safety or DB on Westbrook. No viable TE? LJ Smith has been the Eagles feature TE all season and he's completely healthy. NE will have to also put a safety deep on TO if they plan on bumping...

    Mac mini

Considering they sold the cube for $1799 (I think), they should sell millions of these. The slashdot crowd is wetting themselves over the possibilities. I'd like to get one but then I'd have to buy a display from Apple that costs twice as much as the mini! :) And I can't bear to hook up a...

    Sony Grand Wega Comparisons

I have the WE and love it. I was pretty much focuses on the 50" size so snagged one before they even made it onto shelves. I saw the 55" a week later. I probably would buy the 55" if I had to do it all over again. That being said, I couldn't be happier with SD and DVD on this set. BTW, I...

I ripped all my CDs over the summer into iTunes at 256k mp3. I have around 9000 songs, over 700 albums, and 532 artists. I play them through my HT via my Tivo and the Tivo Desktop software. The coolest trick is to leverage the power of iTunes "Smart Playlist" functionality. Playlists...

    WILD AT HEART (consolidated thread)

What exactly is in the unaltered version? I remember the Dafoe shotgun blast to be pretty graphic. I recall a dog running away with a hand or something too. Since this film hasn't been on DVD, the last time I saw it was in the theater many years ago.
