Thanks for the review RAH.
I've been championing for YEARS to get all of Ms. Harlow's films on DVD. Myself and many others around here grew frustrated as the years went on and films like Bombshell, Red Dust & Hold Your Man never saw the light of day. It was not until about two years before the...
Well,
I'll just wait until they have their 5 for $50 or 10 for $100 sale and pick them up then. No worries. The Holiday season is almost upon us, so those who want them should be able to get them at reasonable prices at that time. That being said, since the Harlow titles have proven to be so...
I wish Warner would offer the three Harlow/Gables together as part of a package deal. If I bought these three separately, it would cost more than the Harlow box-set they released last October which included seven films.
I should add that two bonus pieces are missing from the US release:
Renoir's silent short (La petite marchande d'allumettes - 32 minutes) The Little Match Girl from 1928 (in SD PAL) & "Francoise Giroud remembers" which contains some interesting information from shooting La Grande Illusion for...
The Samuel Goldwyn always gives out beautiful glossy programs on coated paper - I always save them. The one for Sleeping Beauty last week was also a keeper.
I can't way to see the forthcoming programs for 2001 and Spartacus next month!
The screening itself was fantastic. The event, at tleast...
It's a pity Mr. O'Toole won't be attending the Academy screening next Thursday in person.
Aside from having the honor to have met him, I would've LOVED to have had him sign my first trade edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom (London: Jonathan Cape, 1935). Yes, he's not the historical T.E...
I agree.
The studios are probably still using the old DVD business model. I mean, I remember Warner claiming how the Astaire/Rogers and Thin Man sets sold something like a million copies - a feat that would be barely imaginable on blu-ray, especially more so in this economic climate.
I still...
Is the market in such dire shape that Sony can't release a title like Bye Bye Birdie on it's own?
This is a pretty big catalog title, one that's consistently stocked at places like Target on dvd. I think a bare-bones release of this title at $29.95 (plus tax/shipping) or higher is a...
Jean Harlow! :P
I love the other ladies included in this collection as well, but I've been waiting for an official release of Three Wise Girls for years.
I agree. I think we'll see MANY archive releases for these titles, but very few of them will surface on Blu IMHO. I mean, Warner still hasn't released most of their own major catalog titles on Blu such as the James Dean & the Astaire/Rogers films.
I don't know....
It's certainly fantastic news, but I've got a feeling that very few of these titles will make it to Blu. Guys and Dolls and The Best Years of Our Lives seem pretty likely, but I'm not so sure about the rest. I think 90% of them will probably end up in the Warner archives.
I was really HOPING that Criterion would've had a shot at a complete Dietrich/Von Sternberg boxset on blu-ray. As already mentioned, Universal doesn't have a very good track record with the Dietrich/Von Sternberg titles on home video. So much for that........
You telling me. I just shelled out $70 for TWO films from Twilight Time: Mysterious Island & Rapture. I did this in a show of support, but I'll likely NEVER spend this much for two films ever again - especially once you consider that both are blind buys for me. For this amount of money, Twilight...
All I can say is that Warner just keeps getting better and better with this program. This clearly shows that they care about their product and listen to their buyers, as well as seriously address lingering issues that some have raised on the HTF and on their excellent Facebook page. The Harlow...
I believe the WHV chats are probably a thing of the past. They now regularly accept/answer questions via their archive Facebook page. This is pretty cool, since everyone who posts pretty much has his/her questions answered.
I still can't think for the life of me why WHV is trying to bury this film. Is it really anymore/less violent or controversial than A Clockwork Orange and several other films released during this period? I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Russell at a screening of The Music Lovers two years ago at...
I trust Bill Hunt.
Perhaps Network is being a bit more tight-lipped about it than A&E. If year one sold well on Blu-ray, it seems only logical that they would release year 2. I'm not sold on the year 2 will not happen because of the fan displeasure angle, because if that were really the case, we...
Yeah. I was in the Burbank area last night and decided to stop in about 8pm last night thinking "maybe I'll get lucky." Lo and behold, they were completely out of the Conversation and the Crow. I got a rain check for the Conversation, but I doubt I'll be returning there before an online retailer...
I wonder what happened to the Space 1999 Year 2 blu-ray set? If I'm not mistaken, Bill Hunt confirmed several months ago that it was coming in the 4th quarter, but I've not heard anything since then. Anyone?
Thanks.
I've pretty much given up on weekly sales from Fry's because everything "good" (especially catalog titles) is usally gone by shortly after noon on Friday....I usually have to work Friday mornings, so can't make it there early enough. I remember going there two Saturdays ago (the Burbank...
someone over at Sony really dropped the ball on this. It's been listed as a placeholder on Amazon for months only to miraculously surface a few days before release? Unless this is an Amazon exclusive, no other retailer seems to have this title even listed.
Elephant Man is a Paramount property Stateside & The Deer Hunter belongs to Universal. Rumors have been swirling for YEARS about a pending release of The Elephant Man from Paramount to no avail. Deer Hunter did receive an HD-DVD release from Universal during the format war, but they seem to be...
Sadly, those days seem to be gone. I was in Best Buy last night and they didn't even stock Some Like It Hot or American Graffiti on Blu-ray! These are two major classic catalog titles that they would only allow you to purchase online. I then attempted to order The Cincinatti Kid on blu and Night...
Sadly, I've heard that certain individuals have been buying up their local Wal-mart stock and slapping them on Ebay for inflated prices ($19.95-$39.95). This is now making this title hard to find. Perhaps Wal-mart should start implementing a limit on their exclusive items to thwart this?
Ah, Dave's on Ventura. I remember going there in 2001 for a Superman Donner dvd signing. I also remember how abruptly they closed in 2003, as there really wasn't much in the way of advanced warning. Apparently, the employee's showed up one day for work and were simply let go. It was pretty...
Stuff like this continues to puzzle me to no end. This is another reason why I hate these fancy packages. What's the point of having them if you can't safely/practically remove the discs from the package to watch the film without damaging the discs? It certainly isn't difficult to design a case...
I usually refuse to buy these "gift collections" out of principle, but the price ($24.99 after coupon) was just to good to pass up. I was waiting for an eventual UK release, but I've heard nothing regarding an eventual release across the pond (or for that matter, a gimmick-free edition Stateside...
Greg, I'm assuming you're referring more so to the deeper classic catalog titles we all love here at the HTF like From Here to Eternity, Anatomy of a Murder, On the Waterfront, The Capras, etc; as opposed to more contemporary catalog titles like Das Boot or The Muppets take Manhattan? Honestly...
