    Mitsu 55511 format mode???

For anamorphic widescreen DVDs, standard mode will display them properly. For 4:3 TV programming, use the one you think looks the best. I prefer the Expand mode for most types of programs. Avoid Narrow mode as the grey bars on each side may be burned into the picture.

Thoughts on a 43" GE Widesreen

Mine is another vote for avoiding any TV with the GE logo on it. If you are on a budget, scrape together another couple hundred bucks and look around for Panasonic's 47" widescreen set. Still an inexpensive TV, but not a cheap one.

Help, bad PQ on HDTV Mitsu w Dish SDTV

It is not a true statement that the sat box has little to do with picture quality. There are variations of quality among sat boxes just as with anything else, and the type of connection used can make a big difference as well. A giveaway $50 sat box connected with coax cable won't look as good as...

NEWBIE l@@king for any help with purchase of Mitsubishi WS-55511

Very few RPTVs will display an image at 720p. It is highly unlikely that you can tell the difference between 1080i and 720p on a 55" screen. Most of the major networks are broadcasting 1080i, and those programs in 720p present no problem to any HDTV -- the TV will simply convert it to 1080i...

    Mitsubishi WS-65311

I agree that the platinum series TVs aren't really a good deal unless you already have plenty of HDTV coming through cable or off-air in your area. At any rate, the gold series TV + an off-air HD decoder ends up being a bit less expensive than the platinum, TV, anyway. If you go with DirecTV you...

    65" Mitsubishi Rear Projection Screen

The answer to that question depends on the HDTV availability in your area. If you can get HDTV through your cable system or off-air with an antenna, I'd say go ahead and get one like the Platinum series, with the built-in HD tuner. On the other hand, if you're on satellite and you will get HDTV...

    65" Mitsubishi Rear Projection Screen

It's a typo. This is their Platinum series 65", and it is not a stripped-down version like the one BB carries. Strange, though, that nowhere on the Sears page is it mentioned that this TV has a built-in HDTV decoder, which I'd think would be one of its selling points. Anyway, Mitsubishi makes a...

Gateway Plasma - I think I'm gonna buy it (newbie here, is this a bad choice?)

It doesn't make economic sense to buy a Porsche, either, when you consider you can get a perfectly nice '68 Beetle and save yourself about $120 large. But Porsche seems to do pretty well, from what I hear. While they are certainly going to get cheaper and better as time goes by, there are PLENTY...

    Does "lense size" matter?

Hitachi did, on last year's models, claim a "six-element lens system," which according to them helped with focus along the edges and in the corners of the image. This year they are doing 5-element lenses like everybody else, which should tell you somethign about the CC guy as well as something...

Mitsubishi 55411 - grain problem? help!

Give it a week or two to break in, then take another look. Other things to look into: Make sure the DVD player is set to 16:9 output. I'd also recommend turning SVM off as John said, but put the sharpness all the way down. And yes, some films on DVD are just grainy and there's nothing you can do...

RPTV - Sony, Mistsu, or Hitachi. Which should I buy?

If I had a vote I'd vote for the Mitsu: a great-looking, extremely reliable set with the best user-menu convergence of the bunch. If I had two votes, I'd vote for the Mitsu and take away a vote from the Hitachi. Never liked the look of the Hitachis, they upconvert everything to 540 lines, and to...

    How to transport a RPTV?

I would have to say that transporting a RPTV on its back would be the next best way to do it, if transporting it right-side-up is out of the question. But anything other than right-side-up is risky. If that mirror in there shifts - or worse yet, breaks - you have a big problem, and for that...

Funny comments and questions you heard from kids during a particular movie

At the end of "Phantom Menace," when Darth Maul gets cut in half at the waist and both halves plummet into some sort of shaft, I overheard a 6ish-year-old kid exclaim, "He lost his pants!!!"

New Samsung 43 or 50" DLP rear projector in stores NOW!!

As an electronics salesman I agree with what Derek said. But I also think anybody has the right to buy the cheapest thing they find, but if you are going to shop online you should do just that: SHOP online. Do your research online and buy online and you aren't bothering anybody and there will be...

Should I upgrade to a Plasma?

That Panny plasma is not HD, while the XBR is. The Panny's max resolution is 480p... some places are calling this EDTV (E for Enhanced) instead of HDTV. The coolness factor would go up if you get the plasma, but the picture quality would go down. You'll have to start looking in the $6000-$7000...

    Extended Warranty for RPTVs

It is a myth that if something's going to go wrong, it will happen in the first month or whatever... if there is a defect with the TV it will often show up early, but not always. Keep in mind that most RPTVs have been running for a number of hours at the factory before they are shipped off to...

    The Shining OAR or MAR

Can't give you the exact time of the movie because I don't own it, but in the first arial shots of the Overlook Hotel, you can see the blades at the very top of the screen on at least one of these shots. As I recall you really only see the shadows the rotor blades cast rather than the blades...

    The Shining OAR or MAR

I know it's an old thread but I just found it. My take on the Delbert/Charles Grady thing: First off, I'm sure everybody's heard this before, and I know all Kubrick's fans will slam me, but Kubrick either didn't understand King's book at all, or chose to write his own story only loosely based...

    Help newbie: Best Plasma screen

Scott, Your point is well taken, but if you read through this entire thread you'll see that the initial comparison between Pioneer TVs was between the Elite and the PDP505HD. I don't believe the PDP505 is (was) a commercial model. Even when the 503CMX was brought up later, we still had a post...

    Help newbie: Best Plasma screen

With all due respect, I have seen the Elite and the standard-line Pioneer plasmas side-by-side, with all adjustments as close as I can get 'em, and the Elite looks noticeably better... better black level, better color, better detail. Just because they use the same glass doesn't make them the...

Best Buy won't go down in price...

I didn't say I'd go into car dealerships and give them the price on the sticker. Nor would I go into a TV store and give them sign price on a TV. I'm not a foolish consumer. But neither do I base my buying decisions on how much something may or may not be marked up. Unless you're at a soup...

Best Buy won't go down in price...

There are stores just like what FrankL described, with no dealing. They are called "Best Buy," and most of this thread has been dealing with how to get BB to deal and drop their price! Go figure. So here comes a rant: When I go in to buy shoes or a movie ticket or a video game, the thought never...

Large RPTV Purchase Looming - Recommendations?

I'd avoid the Samsung only for broadcast picture quality issues. It looks great on a DVD or HD source but pretty soft on cable or sat. Nice color though, and the price is right, so since you'll be watching a lot of DVDs it might be worth a serious look. I'd lean towards the Mitsu or the Toshiba...

    Mitsubishi vs. Hitachi HDTV RP

I must admit that the menu on the new Hitachis is a big improvement over their last one, but I still like Mitsu's better. A quick note on Hitachi's "117 point convergence." You can only converge the image at 39 different points on the screen. Hitachi counts all three colors (Red, blue, and...

    Mitsubishi Plasma

I just saw Mitsubishi's new 50" plasma display PD5010 and I am very impressed. IMO, it rivals the Pioneer Elite 1000, which up to now is the best plasma display I've seen. It has a silver frame, which I'm not too fond of, and a pretty crummy remote, but the picture is great! And, most surprising...

    Mitsubishi vs. Hitachi HDTV RP

Both are nice sets. Mitsu has, IMO, an easier and more complete user menu for convergence, color balance, and the like. Mitsu is very adjustable and can provide a picture as good as any TV out there when calibrated properly. As Dan mentioned, the Hitachi has DVI input, so you'd be covered IF...

Best Buy won't go down in price...

"If he could get me to pay list price for the TV, he would" Of course he would! That's not a "scam," it's common sense. And if you could get someone to pay to $100,000 for a job you'd gladly do for $50,000, you'd do that, too, in a heartbeat. But making a guy work hard enough to earn $50,000...

    Calling all Mitsu WS-55411 Owners...

The graininess might go away as the set breaks in. "The grainy picture bothers me the most. I thought RPTV's were supposed to offer a higher level of detail than direct view sets." If you think about it, the higher level of detail of the RPTV is going to reveal more graininess and more...

FrankL, No, I'm not kidding. I'm very serious. Theron and John said it exactly. "Any effort by that salesman to sell me that TV for more than $ 2300 is just an effort to take money out of my pocket and put it in his." And any effort by you to force a salesman's hand with this...
