Importing British speakers into Canada - duties?

Have any Canadian members of this forum bought British-made speakers online and shipped them into Canada? Are there import duties in addition to the GST/PST? FYI, I'm looking to buy ATC speakers.

Problem with S/PDIF out to Anthem AVM 2

My SB card is the Live 5.1 X-Gamer. After spending an entire evening digging around in the AVS Forum, I believe that you're right when you say the digital out is outputting a 5V signal. In fact, it's common knowledge (at AVS anyway) that all SBLive cards, with the exception of a few models...

Problem with S/PDIF out to Anthem AVM 2

When I connect the S/PDIF out from my Creative SB Live soundcard to my Anthem AVM 2 pre-amp processor, the AVM does not detect a signal. It doesn't detect both Dolby Digital bitstreams and normal PCM. Before the AVM, I was using an inexpensive Kenwood receiver, and was able to receive DD and...

    W2K Pro crashes at random.

For starters, you can change the setting so that Windows doesn't automatically reboot after you get the blue screen. Right-click on 'My Computer', select Properties. In the Advanced tab, click the 'Startup and Recovery...' button. Uncheck the 'Automatically reboot' option. Now the next...

    DVD-ROM Recommendations?

I've had really good luck with my AOpen CD-RW drive. It writes CDs in all of the modes (DAO RAW), detects errors, and even has "JustLink" (i.e. "BurnProof"). To top it off, it's inexpensive. As Ken mentioned, some AOpen products are just other manufacturers' products in sheep's clothing. That...

    Asus A7A266 motherboards...

I have this motherboard, and I have 768 MB of DDR memory installed (one 256 MB module and one 512 MB module). My system seems to work OK. You're correct that the SDRAM slots are rendered useless, because you can't combine DDR with regular SD memory. I don't know why the designers bothered...

Where are the respectable, flexible dealers in Toronto

I second Rick's suggestion of Audio One. The people there are friendly and most importantly, flexible on price. BTW, Audio One is located on Steeles, south of Hwy 7. My tactic when negotiating is to let them make the first offer, by asking for a discounted price. Then I make a reasonable...

Help me with B&W CM2's please

I listened to the CM2s, along with the cheaper 602s and more expensive CDM 1NTs. Here is my take these speakers, and how they compare to each other. The 602s were not as crisp sounding as the other two pairs. The midrange detail was good, but mid/upper treble was not as strong. The CM2s were...

    Attributing system sibilance

I have Paradigm Mini-monitors (v1) and I do find them bright. For the first month or so, I loved the sound of these speakers, and didn't find anything wrong with them. As more time passed, I became more familiar with the sound of the speakers used with a wider variety of recordings. It was...

    Paradigm Studio alternatives

I recently auditioned the Paradigm Ref Studio 40. However, I didn't like what I heard, so I tried the B&W 602 (note: all comparisons with same dealer, same room). I preferred the less expensive 602 to the Studio 40. Being foolish, I listened to the twice as expensive CDM 1NT, and found them to...

Is the microphone that you used to record the tone accurate? Was it a $10 microphone you can buy at any old store, or did you use the Radio Shack SPL meter output? ------------------ TqN

Can anyone recommend a good audio program?

To find a CD software player, go here: http://www.gracenote.com/players.html Perform the search, and you'll get back a long listing of players to choose from. The one I use is simply named "Player". It's small but simple, just what I wanted. Plus, it's CDDB-enabled, meaning with every disc...

    DVDrom or DVD player?

A few comments about getting the DVD-rom:Your computer's video card will need a TV output (obvious, but worth mentioning just in case). You'll still need to (ideally) buy a software DVD player. You'll have to boot up your comp every time you want to watch a movie.A cable length of a few metres...

    Denon 3801 + BW CDM1NT

I had a lengthy audition with the CDM 1NTs at the store hooked up to an Arcam CD player and Classe integrated, and yes, the 1NTs sounded forward/bright/harsh to me. However, if the music being played through these speakers is of a laid back quality (not too much presence in upper mids/lower...

Which Radio SPL meter is best, Digital or analog? Accuracy?

The manual that comes with the analog SPL meter contains a graph that shows the meter's response curve. From about 2 - 7 kHz, the meter is overly sensitive from about 2 - 4 dB. But at 10 kHz, the meter's response is down by 3 dB, and at 20 kHz is down by approximately 15 dB.

Advice on leads to go speakers -> Receiver -> Computer

Well, I don't know what receiver and computer system you have, so I'll just describe what I did. I've set up my computer (Sound Blaster 5.1 card) to output only a "digital" signal. I let my receiver convert the digital signal to analog. I figure letting the receiver perform the D/A conversion...

Can you expressed Speaker efficiency comparing it to increase in power?

Another possible reason for the large perceived difference in volume level is that one pair of speakers has more bass/midrange than the other pair. I've found that, even with two speakers that measure the same sensitivity, if one has more bass/midrange, and the other has more treble, the...

    Sub woofer connection

Yes, Mike, a powered sub uses its own amp whether it's hooked up via speaker-level or line-level inputs. A sub without a built-in amp would need a separate amp (or receiver) to power it. Obviously, this setup would require the use of speaker-level connections. About John's advice to turn the...
