    Question about Winston Churchill

Pamela: Churchill kept reporting the aggressive plans of Germany, yet his reports were ignored. Chamberlain, then-PM, was among those ignoring the warnings. However, when Hitler began his invasion of The Low Countries on May 10, 1940 and Chamberlain resigned. Three days later, Churchill, who...

Getting foot stink out of Birkenstocks...

I have about 18 pairs of Birkenstocks and Finn Comforts -- sandals, shoes and clogs. At least one pair of Birkenstock sandals is 22 years old and none have ever had the odor problem.

    Steak 'n Shake

KEITH H: As I recall, the one on Green was near IHOP. S & S was the location for many 1957 Chevy Rallies up until it closed. The only one now located on North Prospect amid the exploding commerical developments: Best Buy, CC, Lowes, Menards, and MANY other restaurants. I forgot: Pickle...

    Steak 'n Shake

Jarod: You're correct. The first Steak 'n Shake opened in Bloomington, Illinois in the late 1930s. I've been frequenting these establishments throughout Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Florida for more than 50 years. The burgers are so good that a friend of mine who had a radio show in NYC...

    Mattes. Big Deal?

Scott: You may use a straight-edge and a utility knife to cut the foam board. OR, you might ask the art-supply store where you buy the foam-board to cut it for you.

    Mattes. Big Deal?

The effort to make and use mattes is definitely one of the least expensive (less than $10 in my case) and worthwhile tweaks available. I agree that the improvement is most visible in a darkened room.

    Mattes for CRT

The mattes I made for our 36" Toshiba CRT are simple to make and inexpensive. Total investment: Less than $10 for materials and about 15 minutes in time. A large piece of flat black foam-board matting from an art supply or framing store and Velcro strips from WalMart are the only materials...

Audio Problems On Band of Brothers on Dishnetwork

I have to agree that BOB may be one of the finest TV miniseries ever. LBX and DD 5.1 made this an exeptionally fine premiere. However, I also noted a few audio/video dropouts on HBO-E via DishNetwork which was quite annoying. Spoke to DishNetwork tech support a few minutes ago. They believe...

Has UPS ever lied about a delivery attempt?

They haven't lied to me that I know of. BUT, they sure screwed up on delivery about 2 years ago. I ordered an antenna (I'm a ham radio operator in East-Central Illinois) from a Milwaukee firm. All deliveries from them have been here overnight for years. Not so with the antenna. It first went to...

    Thank you HTF!!

I mistakenly posted a "thank you" in the AVS forums when, in fact, it was here where I learned about mattes. Thanks to your help and ideas, I have been enjoying widescreen movies on my 36-inch Toshiba direct view TV for several months. What a difference the mattes make!! I used Avia to calibrate...

DISHnetwork *is* an option for me - a few questions...

Robert: I have had my Dish 500 antenna mounted on the side of my ham radio tower for nearly three years with no problems. The tower is 56-feet tall (Dish antenna at about 30 feet) and is set in four feet of concrete. Very stable as I'm sure your 14-foot pole would be. As for the distance from...

    Surge Suppression Suggestions

James: I use Tripp Lite surge protectors on my systems. They are highly rated and have done their jobs quite well for me, especially during power surges/outages in our rural area. These also carry a guarantee that includes several thousand dollars of damage to your equipment. I believe I paid...

    DishPlayer 7200

I've had two DP 7200s "online" for a year and have had none of the oft-reported chronic problems many DP owners report. One still contains the stock HD. The other, I swapped for a Maxtor, 5400 rpm, 32-gig HD. Both operate flawlessly. I bought my DPs direct from Echostar, including a third for a...

    Woohoo! Finally getting DishNetwork!

Bill: You will enjoy your DisNetwork system, I'm certain. We've been subscribers for only 2-1/2 years and enjoy it as much as the day we switched from cable after 32 years!! We've not looked back and constantly wonder why those who have a choice would continue with cable instead of switching...

    Antenna / Dish grounding

Howard: By ramrodding, I mean grasping the rod with both hands and working it up and down in a vertical motion into the saturated soil repeatedly. NO pounding with a hammer or any such blunt tool....Just jamming it into the earth by holding onto it with your hands. Good luck.

    Antenna / Dish grounding

Howard: The easiest way to get an 8-foot copper rod into the ground is to first saturate the ground with water. I do this with a garden hose and then using a "ramrod" type action on the rod, it goes down. You likely will need to put more water down a few times as you continue this process...
