Speakers that sound like many times their cost (and ones that don't)

Have you ever noticed how common it is to see in speaker reviews (magazine or online) "you'd have to spend at least twice the cost to get similar performance" or "competes with speakers costing up to 3 times the price," etc, etc. ??? I started to wonder if so many speakers perform above their...

SVS single vs. dual woofer box subs

I noticed something about the SVS box subs. The dual woofer models have tunings of 25, 20, and 16 Hz. And the single woofer models have tunings of 20, 16, and 12 Hz. Is there a specific reason for this? I can't remember the order that the box models were released, but I think the single Ultra...

    What's the new NSP1 ??

Is there a new package from JBL that I'm not aware of that replaces the popular NSP1? Or do you just have to put together your own setup?

Looking for tall, sliver speakers that are actually good!

My roommate is putting together a home theater system, and he's started with a killer Samsung 50" DLP. Now for the audio. He really likes the look of these speakers because they match the TV so well: But, he does want good sound. I have recommended the following setup based on...

Was all set to go w/ JBL NSP1 & Sony sub, please help...

I'm putting together a system for a friend, and I've been off the boards for a while, so I don't really know what the super popular recommendation is nowadays. I do know that before the JBL NSP1 and the ubiquitous Sony sub were very tough to beat for the money. But now there's an updated NSP1...

What else besides RP-91 does scaling?

Looking for a new DVD player for my parents' Mitsu 65" HD-ready TV. I know that I want it to be progressive scan, no chroma bug, and scale non-anamorphic DVDs for a 16x9 screen. I know that the Panasonic RP-91 fits the bill, but what else?? Thanks,

Pre/pro + Active speakers = better than the "normal" way?

Just wondering what people's opinion on this is. When I get the funds to really do my home theater the way I want, I envision 7 active speakers plus SVS and a pre/pro, that's it! Nice and simple, with all amps matched to the speakers by the manufacturers themselves, plus no passive crossovers...

Is there any reason at all for non-anamorphic DVDs to exist??

The only thing I can think of is that the in-player conversion is not so great in most DVD players, so for conventional sets, a non-anamorphic DVD could look better than an anamorphic one that's converted by the DVD player. So, is there a reason for the nuisance known as "non-anamorphic"??

Who has active speakers in their HT?

Just wondering who is using active speakers in their home theater and what you think of them. I'm thinking that when I get the dough together to get something really nice, I'm just gonna get a pre/pro and active speakers, like Genelec or maybe M&K pro. Oh, subs would be SVS all the way, of...

Is that the Vifa XT tweeter in the new Polk LSi series?

Has everyone seen the new Polk LSi series? http://www.polkaudio.com/home/products.php?category=21 It's looks like they're using the top of the line Vifa XT tweeter (as seen in nOrh and the megabuck Krell speakers). I guess Polk isn't making all their own drivers anymore, right? Anyway, it'll...

What's the cheap/easy way to deaden a cabinet?

I have some bookshelf speakers and a center channel that vibrate quite noticably if you put your hand on them while they're playing at even moderate volumes. I'm pretty sure there's little stuffing in there, and there might not be a traditional brace either. I figure acoustic stuffing is easy...

Has anyone done a sub with this 18" beast?

http://www.audioc.com/subs/ACI_drivers/sv18.htm From the DIY pages at ACI. Curious if anyone has made a sub with this guy, and how were the results? RichardH
