    LAND OF THE DEAD dvd

It currently looks like Dream of the Dead, the making of documentary shown on Monsters HD and IFC, won't be on the American release. However, it will be on the European with some alterations that the director, Roy Frumkes, wanted to make.

    Edison's Frankenstein and Creepy Classics

I must warn you the DVD is awful. I haven't watched Nosferatu, but Frankenstein looks terrible. The picture is soft. (I bought this right after seeing in projected, and the print was not like this.) The original intertitles are replaced with video ones that looks like they were typed up moments...

    THX-Optimizer

I've said it before and here it goes again. Those THX test signals are different for each title. I have a sensitive video projector which I'm always trying to get the most contrast out of to make it as bright as possible. For Phantom Menace I had the contrast set between 0 and 20 (it's been a...

Just something I've always wondered, what is the line at the top of 2:35:1 films?

Could you be seeing some sort of a divider created by your player at the border of black in the dvd picture area and black created by the player during an anamorphic downconversion? Is your TV 16:9 or 4:3?

Please help me find this Spaghetti Western on DVD or at least identify the movie

It might be Adios, Sabata. Shown on Turner Classic Movies a few months ago as part of their spaghetti western festival. My memory has blurred many of the movies together, but if I remember right, it also had circus-type stunts strangely thrown in.

Anamorphic enhancement: is it expensive to have on DVD?

I could be wrong but to have a an anamorphic transfer that truly adds detail, I believe you have to do a Hi-def transfer and downconvert it. I don't believe there is a lens or or set-up procedure that allows people to to do a regular NTSC or PAL anamorphic transfer. You could do a regular...

Does anybody here actually calibrate using the THX Optimizer?

A video projector is much more sensitive to differences, and I have noticed some big differences in different THX optimodes. I don't think I'd bother if I was watching on a direct view set, but I always use them on my Plus Piano projector.

"I've been a member of the HOME THEATER FORUM for 3 years, your wrong!"

Who knows John, maybe you're dad'll be right. When hi-def DVDs come out, leave it to some crappy public domain company to put ten films in standard def on one hi-def DVD.

    S-VHS plays on VHS?

Possibly, the signal was a VHS signal. Even though it was recorded on a SVHS tape. If so, it would play on any NTSC VHS deck, just not with SVHS quality.

    Horror/Gore DVD Shopping PART II

THANK YOU Mark. I can't believe I'm excited to own Dial Help and Body Count on DVD. What the hell is wrong with me. Now if only I could find a copy of The Washing Machine. Max, I loved the Church when I saw it years ago when it first came out on tape. I liked it much better than...

    Horror/Gore DVD Shopping PART II

I believe the Porno Holocaust DVD does not contain an English track or subs. However, I have a subtitled bootleg tape which I watched recently to decide if I wanted to buy the DVD. It was pretty dull. It was mostly hardcore porn, light on the horror. A much better blend of the two is Sexy...

even longer cut of Natural Born Killers

Mark, does the box advertise anything about a longer cut like the email I recieved does? What's the listed running time? Thanks.

even longer cut of Natural Born Killers

I got this email from www.chainsaw.demon.nl about a dutch DVD release of Natural Born Killers: "Natural Born Killers DVD IN STOCK!Pal region 2 This Dutch disc presents the ultimate and longest version of Oliver Stone's "hate-it-or-love-it" epic (longer than the DVD released in the Oliver...

    Dellamorte Dellamore (AKA Cemetery Man)

Max, I couldn't agree more. In my opinion, it is the last truly great (destined for classic) horror films that I've seen. And the Medusa DVD is stunning. I can't imagine a better looking DVD.

    Mario Bava's Rabid Dogs

It is legit. But it's not too legit to quit. In fact its long out of print and gets a high price on ebay. There is a German version that I believe is still in print. I am not sure of its region coding or whether it has an English track or subtitles. It's probably PAL though. It is also...

    Programming Criterion's "Close Encounters"?

Here's what I've been wondering. I believe the UFO shadow shot replaced another shot from the original version. But the shadow shot is on the Criterion LD. What about the original shot. Is it somewhere on the LD, that I am not aware of.

    Twin Peaks Pilot DVD....yuck!

This could be the funniest untintenionally humorous thread of all time. Of course, I have not read all the threads out there. And you may feel differently, but I am sure most people would find this thread adequately funny. And this thread is funnier than its VHS version.

The Ten Commandments: does this look as bad as I think it does?

Mitchell, about the contrast being blown out, do you see the same amount of detail in a direct view set? I have a Plus Piano as well, and I have the contrast pumped a little more than it should just to get some more brightness out of it. It works fine for most movies, but others that use the...

    Crimes Of Passion

IMO, the commentary only gets good once Russell leaves. He just brings it down with inane comments telling us what we can see on screen. Sandler doesn't say much letting Russell, unfortunately, take the stage. Once he does leave though, Sandler has his chance to talk about some of the finer...

    Patton: 2 disc version

I don't get it. Couldn't pirates just bootleg the soundtrack CD's? Or is their something special about these tracks on the DVD's?

    Battle Royale

Perhaps you should consider berateing me here and now. It would be fun and amusing for everyone. And due to my self-imposed exile from someone we both now, who knows when I'll see you. Give it your best shot.

    Any experience with Plus Piano?

A progressive scan player will do you no good. The Piano will only accept a progressive signal from its DVI input. However, the onboard deinterlacer is actually quite good. So it's a great little projector for those who 1)don't want to spend a lot of money on other equipment e.g...

Elite to rerelease Re-Animator and Night of the Living Dead!

Don't forget, the Anchor Bay special edition looked great. Even better than the Elite transfer. Although that could be due to DVD's improved resolution, It did look better to me in other ways as well. I mean, just look at how great the footage of the crazy priest that bookends the film is...

Elite to rerelease Re-Animator and Night of the Living Dead!

Matthew, I'd wait before selling that NOTLD disc. Elite has been going downhill lately, and you wouldn't want to get stuck with a worse disc. The supplements will probably be all there, but it's all about the movie itself for me.
