There is no hidden cost with plasmas. What you are now seeing by most manufactures are 3rd and 4th generation models. Brightness and contrast on most of todays plasmas rival those of todays CRTs.

Let me try and clear a few things about Plasmas.
1. Black Level- The Panasonic and the Fuji is highly praised for their black levels. The current models are equal to CRTs as attested by P.Putman. The Panasonic is the clear winner in this category.
2. Burn-in- The same pre-cautions apply...
I am no expert, but my guess is the "Greyscale" needs calibrating. You don't say if it just appeared one day or not. Chances are it has been like this from day one. The set can be calibrated by a trained ISF Tech and this should fix it.
