I was thinking $100. I have a classic black model Millenium DTS decoder that I no longer need. I haven't been in the realm of home theater for a while so am not sure if there is a need for this piece of equipment in the HT world anymore? Advice? Anybody interested or need one? I have the...
This happened to my single disc version. The disc had a milky /cloudy look to it. It wasn't a player problem. I was able to exchange it for a replacement.
I live in an older house that has twin lead (remember that)antenna throughout. Probably installed in the early 1960s. It works fine for my OTA signals. Can cable signals run over this? I assume HDTV OTA would not work either... Is this 300 Ohm? Any thoughts are appreciated. I hope this is...
This is kind of a non-post, but when I saw there were still some 414s being used, I just had to chime in. I've had one since Dec 98. I'll need to check the firmware for my own curiosity. Paid about $300 back then. Not too bad of a deal..component video, DTS, 96/24..certainly good features for...
Interesting reading all. Walter, thanks for the accuracy info. In fact I was going to post some of your exact points and would like to add: 1. The book opens with Blackburn falling while roping. It's been a while since I read the book, but don't recall the pilot dodging an RPG causing the...
Regarding the "fullscreen"/"widescreen" comparison page...is the fullscreen version truly "open matte"? The review suggests even the CGI/Special effects scenes may be open matte when they would usually be pan/scan. It seems to be some kind of combination of pan/scan and open matte because there...
I think Tino and Andrew nailed it. However, I prefer Powaaquatsi. I have both on VHS (and soundtracks on CD) and will get them on DVD. The soundtrack to Koyaanisqatsi has also been released on DVD-A. I have not heard it or read any reviews so I cannot comment on it's quality. Ed
I took the liberty of contacting the VSDA for additional information regarding this bill. This is the response I received:
The bill to which the article is referring is the Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act (CBDTPA) - S. 2048. This bill was introduced by Senator Hollings...
All interesting comments. I also am skeptical this "bill" will have any success. However, I posted the link as information that those who participate in this hobby may find interesting. The AP seemed to lend it some legitimacy. Hopefully Jack can find some useful info when he searches the...
I hope this hasn't been discussed already:

For lack of a better term, is this....Legislated DIVX?!?
Say it isn't so...
I'm reading Tom Browkaw's "Greatest Generation" and in a few of the chapters it's mentioned that German and Italian POWs brought to the US during WWII would be seen in various towns in the US near where they were being held, usually rural areas it seems. I am wondering if there are any movies...
Patrick:
What model Onkyo do you have? How do you get to the "backdoor". With my 656 I can only get the internal test tones when choosing speakers and adjusting levels. Very frustrating when trying to use AVIA.
Jorge, do you get the internal test tones or are you able to get disc-produced...
Willem, My thoughts exactly. I have a post in the other long thread on the 600 where I was asking about power consumption. Glad you brought it up again...I agree it seems terrribly inefficient.
Ed
Norman:
Thanks for the excellent information. I have an older Onkyo (656) which seems to have more than enough power for 5.1 channels.
However, your information has me concerned about newer Onkyos. From a power supply/consumption standpoint the 600 APPEARS to be pretty hefty (5 amps or...
The Clunes breaking the rules was an interesting event. Regardless of the neighbors being in the 21st century, the idea of bartering for goods remains true to the concept of the program. I think there would have been more than two other families in the vicinity with whom to trade. I think it...
Basically, the higher the sensitivity rating the louder the speaker will be with less power from your amplifier/receiver. I believe this figure is determined by putting a 1Khz signal at 1 watt through the speaker and measuring the speaker's output from a one meter distance. There may be other...
Actually the subject of the power ratings on the 696 was debated in this thread:

It may help...

This is from the 600's manual:
Power consumption of US and Canadian models: 6.7A
It looks like they rated it at 20hz to 20khz into 2 channels 8 ohm load, not all channels.
This is all me thinking "out loud" I hope somebody sets me straight if I'm incorrect...it’s based on a rudimentary...
Does anybody look at the power consumption spec in the back of the owner's manuals of their receiver to get an idea of the quality of the power supply? I've seen them rated in Amps and VA (would this be Volt-Amp?) and watts. Is this spec useful when looking at receivers? What's the formula for...
I rarely use the VCR anymore AND it's old, so I can't really comment on picture quality. It's been a long time since I've played a tape. Not what you wanted to hear I know, but I did want ot respond, sorry. Perhaps other members have made some picture quality comparisons.
Ed
I think what you're looking for is video "converting" (for lack of a better term), not "switching".
Switching is selecting a video and audio source through your receiver, not converting from one signal type to another. Switching is useful when your TV doesn't have enough video inputs for your...
I'm also getting the piano in the right rear (predominantly). I found this strange choice in mixing the audio.
Has anybody had a jittery picture problem at the very beginning of the rehearsal footage (when her hands are moving to the keyboard)?
I may need to exchnage my copy.
The two...
Thank you for the excellent information. I posted this in the linked thread but figured since the conversation went this way it's also appropriate here:
Does speaker efficiency affect this by taxing an amp less if the speaker efficiency is higher (I wouldn't need to turn up the volume as much...
Does speaker efficiency affect this by taxing an amp less if the speaker efficiency is higher (I wouldn't need to turn up the volume as much on the receiver with more efficient speakers to produce the same volume from less efficient speakers)? Or am I off base here and the only important specs...
I've read that they are not all the same...that some are "cleaner" than others. For example, in this thread:
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htfo...threadid=52005
Saying that the 100 watts/channel really aren't 100 and the HK 50 watts are apparently better. How can I read specs to know what...
How are the RS cables with these product numbers:
15-1508C Gold plated RCA cable (red, white yellow color coding)($15 for 6ft)
15-1563 Gold plated Component video cables (red, green blue color coding)($50 for 6ft)
They appear to be the same except for price and color coding. Opinions or...
Besides the technical specs mentioned I'd also like to see:
The PBS Frontline doucumentary "Ambush in Mogadishu"...the complete version. I recall seeing it recently and thought it had been shortened.
Mark Bowden, the book's author, commentary (like Sebastian Junger did for "The Perfect...
Are there multiple dropouts or only one? If you can, please provide the times at which it/they occur. I'm sure other owners of the disc will be glad to check their copies for similar problems and post the results here.
