That's what I've been trying to do, but nobody seems to have the set. I've tried Best Buy and AmericanTV, but no luck. They have the 46" and 51", but not the 57". I guess I need to find another store :) The guy at American TV told me that they are trying to move away from the CRT RPTVs, and...
Can anyone tell me what the dimensions are for each of the two split pieces for the 57H84? I have the overall dimensions, but I'm wondering what the dimensions are when the cabinet is "split".
That's is a damn good price :) Makes me wonder if I should go for something like this, over the 57H84 .. hmmm. Anyway, about the service menu - I saw a 51H84 at best buy yesterday, but couldn't get into the service menu because the TV was sitting high up on a rack and I couldn't reach the...
Are the Toshiba TVs still very tweakable, as they were many years ago? I bought the TW40X81 4 years ago for $2000, and just sold it last week for $600. One of the reasons I bought the Toshiba was because of the ability to access the service menu. I'm wondering if this is still possible with the...
Thanks for the review, Walter. I really do have my eye on this one, but won't buy anything until next year. In the meantime, I'll keep reading and looking :)
Sorry for the delay .. I've been pretty busy this past week (I just got married - :))
I haven't had the set calibrated again. How often does it need to be calibrated? It looks the same to me as it did when Michael calibrated it.
Nice setup you have there, Gregg :) I see you also had Michael calibrate your set .. sweet.
I'd really like to keep my set, but it's only 40" and I think it's time for something bigger :D
Wow, has it really been 3 years since my last post :) Time sure does fly by quickly.
Well, I still have the TW40X81 and it is still rocking!! I'm quite amazed and absolutely love this set. However, I will be finishing the basement in my new home shortly at which time I will be replacing this...
Stefan,
Congrats on the new set. 50H81, right? I'm still considering replacing my TW40X81 with it. I took a look at it last night at Best Buy.
Since it is possible with these sets, I would recommend doing a 64 point convergence over the 9 point. Although a little more time consuming, it...
Well, to answer my own question, I went to Best Buy tonight to take a look at the 50H81. Yes, the service menu convergence is still there .. that makes me happy :) However, the sales clerk was a little upset when I brought the grids up .. I don't think he knew what they were
Oh well...
Well, If it was me, I'd buy the bigger TV. I don't think that 9 or 10' is too close for a 56". Also, you'll be viewing progressive video which makes it easier to watch at a closer distance, compared to interlaced video.
just my opinion

I offered my friend $1100 for the TW40X81 and he accepted it. I think that's a pretty good deal. However, I'm still waiting to here if the service convergence (64 point) is accessible with the new 50H81's. Can I assume that it is since it is possible to get into the service menu??
thanks,
dan
I can't seem to find the answer, but can the service menu be accessed on these new sets .. to at least do the convergence?
Also, how well does 540p upconversion perform on this set?
thanks,
dan

Thanks for the feedback, Michael and Carlo. I told my friend, who is local, that I could probably sell it to him for around 1K, which is a great deal I think. Anybody else, I would probably then say $1200. However, I'm beginning to like the idea of making it a bedroom TV
I also liked...
That is a good point, John. Moving it may affect geometry and convergence possibly, but I would think very little. These items can be fixed pretty easily and I would be willing to do it for whomever purchased the set.
The next question is grayscale - which is really why I got the set...
Huh???
I don't know if you're angry or not :) I don't want to get rid of the set because of the way it looks .. in fact, it looks great!!! You did an awesome job calibrating it!!
I hate to say it, I just want something bigger .. and 50" is about the biggest I can fit into my apartment...
I've been considering selling my TW40X81 to purchase the 50H81 since it is possibly the biggest set I can get into my apartment. The set is about 10 months old now and was calibrated by Michael TLV back in May.
I have a friend that might be interested so I would more than likely give him a...
Sorry .. ignore this post .. I meant to post it elsewhere.
Can anyone tell me what the box dimensions of the 50H81 are? I have a TW40X81 and I am now considering getting this larger set, since it is possibly the largest that will fit into my apartment.
Also, does anyone know how much a 10...
Thanks for the info Abdul.
480p DVD does look awesome on my set, especially after having it calibrated by M-TLV. I've been thinking about using a HTPC, but I'll guess I'll wait awhile for component video cards and when I get a bigger set :)
This is an interesting topic. Would I see any visual benefit of upscaling 480p DVD to 1080i on my TW40X81 using a PC [besides testing that my HDTV inputs work :)]? If so, what hardware/software is needed?
thanks,
dan
Thanks for the feedback, Mike. The surge protection might be the issue. My AC is running in the living room now, which might be causing problems when kicking into cool mode. This is the first time running the TV and AC together at the same time.
thanks,
dan
Last night my TW40X81 turned off by itself. It remained off for about 10 seconds then came back on with no changes to user and service level settings. When it did turn off, the red light remained solid.
Should I be concerned about this? This is the first time it has ever happened and I don't...
For me, these two tweaks didn't make a hugh impact. I feel that the electrical and mechanical focus out of the box was OK. It probably made a small improvement, but not as much as thining the lines using the screen trimpots - that made the BIGGEST difference ... next -> convergence.
dan
I had Michael calibrate my TW40X81. Since I had done most of the stuff myself (Electrical/Mechanical Focus, Convergence, Avia calibration, H-TLV), Michael only performed the gray scale calibration for DVD and HD and also performed the Lens Stripping technique.
My readings were in the high...
The 40H80 has different stretching algorithms to fill the screen. I almost always use the FULL mode to watch cable, although others may prefer to use TW1, TW2, or TW3.
As for anamorphic DVD, use FULL. For non-anomorphic, I sometimes use TW2.
To get the best picture quality, you'll first...
