Right. What I meant was, they apparent created a new (4K) scan for The Abyss, degrained it, and then added 'fake' grain for the new master. It was a somewhat similar process for Aliens a decade ago.
My disc came in from Amazon (Prime) on Wed and I watched the Extended Version last night. I thought the disc looked quite good. At times in some scenes the grain reduction felt a bit too much, but for the most part it never crossed a really bad line. There seems to be some grain in most of it...
I saw comparison caps between the UHD BD (tonemapped) and the old 1080i D-VHS version on another site. To my eyes, the UHD BD was far superior. There was also still some grain in the image.
I was also under the impression that the Lowry process used at the time for the BD completely de-grained Aliens and then added fake grain afterward.
I ordered the UHD BD and plan to compare them.
I hate this strategy of Sony. I would love to have Kramer vs Kramer, Taxi Driver, A League of their Own, but I don't want a number of the other titles in these boxsets. Yeah, I'll even pay almost $30 for each in a steelbook as I did with Lawrence of Arabia. What happened to customer options...
Some of the most stunning UHD BDs stem from 2K DIs.
4K native can be more detailed, depending on the source and how it was filmed, but HDR, wider color gamut, 10 bit, and potentially better compression (vs BD) are the bigger factors of the format by a long shot. Don't sweat it.
Not a big fan of the DNR, but A New Hope looks absolutely stunning on UHD BD. They avoided that plastic look while there is still a ton of finer detail in there (some of which I've never seen before). I also like the color timing, shadows, contrast, and reserved HDR approach.

My mom took me to see Empire on opening night in 1980. I recall waiting a long time in line. At that age (8 yrs old), it was really amazing to see the Star Wars universe expanded. Hoth, Dagobah, and Cloud City. The new characters...who couldn't love Yoda. Boba Fett was too cool. Lando...
I've only watched it once (bought in the initial 4 film boxset) and really enjoyed it. Rear Window, on the other hand, I thought was extremely overrrated and I will probably not be revisiting it. Enjoyed The Birds and Psycho.
The bass on the UHD BD leans a bit closer toward the DVD and LD. The bass on the BD is extremely cooked and there was never another home release that was anything like that.
Hm. I've not read of a single source where Raiders was de-grained and had artificial grain added along with AI...
I liked DoD better than I was expecting (preferred it over Skull especially in terms of script and acting). I only watched it once and I will revisit it in the upcoming months to see how I still feel about it.
However, I will still revisit all five movies.
Raiders is my favorite movie of all...

"As to the OCN, it may also survive in someone's hands, as there seem to be no annotations of destruction."
I always loved the original poster art. My older sister took me to see this at our local "dollar" show when I was five. I can still vaguely recall those Kong images on the big screen which were impressive at that time and my age. For the Studio Canal 4K overseas release, it was color graded...
Very disappointed the UHD BD was cancelled after being announced.
I am assuming this re-issued BD stems from the old, battered looking transfer from their prior release which is in desperate need of a remaster. If so, thumbs down from me.
