I bought this on a whim when it was $11, but haven't watched it yet, and it's disappointing to learn the subtitles are basically non-existent. I guess they expect people to listen to the dubbed soundtrack.
Well, I tried to watch it today on Hulu, but I'm stuck in such a relentlessly crappy state of mind these days, I didn't last long. I opted for something fluffy and easy to waste away my Sunday.
Of course, Frankenstein's "Monster" was actually the opposite of a monster. He was kind and intelligent. It was society's reaction to his appearance that ultimately drove him mad. The popular, movie representation is usually the complete opposite of the basic theme of the novel.
He has always struck me as fairly Kubrickian, which for me is a mixed bag. While I can appreciate his craftsmanship, his films leave me a bit flat. Same with Kubrick.
However, I do agree he is one of the masters of the time. I just prefer Villeneuve, Refn, and some others.
You also might want to drop the surround channel levels a bit. I find that in the real world the center needs to be increased a bit and the surrounds lowered a bit.
Is one closer to the viewer than the other one?
Yes, it is the relative volume of each speaker. According to those numbers, the left speaker must be closer than the right.
Noise reduction today is an entirely different beast from what it was in 2010.
No comparison whatsoever.
These days, noise reduction can be accomplished using an "AI" type of process that's probably too complicated to explain. I only understand it conceptually, anyway. I just know I have...
A less than flattering look at the duo who produced some of the most successful independent films over several decades.
They did make some excellent films.
Title: Merchant Ivory
Genre: Documentary
Director: Stephen Soucy
Cast: James Ivory, Ismail Merchant, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Jenny Beavan, John Bright, Richard Robbins, Vanessa Redgrave, Simon Callow, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Helena Bonham Carter, Sam Waterston, Margot Robbie, Chadwick...
I suspect the main problem is the in-ceiling speakers. Even with ones angled forward, you're still getting dialog that's mostly reverberating around the room. "Expert" installers absolutely love to use in-ceiling speakers due to the low visual impact. The problem is, they're terrible for...
Nice, honest review Todd. Yeah, I hesitated to order this one, but finally did last week. No telling how long I'll have to wait as a result. I might change my mind before then. It's an amusing yarn, but definitely not on par with Aliens. I'm also troubled by some behind-the-scenes ugliness...
I ordered the Cameron trilogy last month from The Evil A. Aliens has a delivery around next weekend, but nothing on The Abyss and True Lies so far. Normally pre-orders go just fine, like with Quigley. These three are a very unusual situation.
Well...I guess I'll just wait. It's not like I don't have more than enough new movies to check out.
Currently, Amazon isn't even taking orders for any of the three Cameron titles. I ordered a month ago... but we'll see.
Rachmaninoff was already mentioned, but for those who aren't aware, two of Carmen's biggest hits were melodies by Sergei Rachmaninoff. I don't mention that as a slam. I think it's great.
You might recognize this...
And this...
Wow Neil. Epic review. In brief, I can relate to the impact this film had on you. I had very much the same reaction to, of all things, Fiddler on the Roof, when I was 7 years old. It just opened my eyes to a world outside the Northern Colorado bubble I grew up in, and the power of film...
The Adjustment Bureau (2010)
My second viewing, after at least a dozen years, of this adaptation of Philip K. Dick. I think it's much better than its reputation. It's really kind of a sweet story, and the two leads are excellent. Plus Emily Blunt doesn't often get to be British. Yeah, it...
The Descent (2005)
First viewing of this spelunking/weird creature horror flick. It was decent, though for me the whole issue of getting stuck was far more terrifying than the rest of it. Decently effective, though the premise is just too absurd to draw me in much, and the ending pretty much...
OMG folks. If reading Mr. Harris' two sentence explanation of the image is too much work...
Yes, that's directed at certain individuals, but I'll refrain from calling them out by name.
