    Performance of AV1

I think their crossover designs are quite different. If I remember correctly, the AV1 has a first order crossover whereas the MB1 uses a higher order crossover. There are pro's and con's to each and the differences may come down to personal preference. I have been looking more and more at the...

What music to test my subwoofer?

Hi Eric - Dr. Hsu (Hsu research) provided a list of recommended DVDs and CDs as part of this interview. Look at the bottom where he sent in his full set of recommendations following the interview.

    AV-1's vs. Emeralds

Martice, I found those PSB speakers to be pretty phenomenal. Have you compared the AV1+'s to them and found that AV1+ audio quality (other than bass extension) came out on top for your personal preferences, or are advantages such as custom finish and size major considerations in your switch?

    DIY Microphones?

Pete, it would be great to get some comparisons to a calibrated microphone. I'm interested in knowing how to mount the electret to ensure it is not poorly coupled to the casing/cables/etc. I suspect there is challenge in bracing and damping these cartridges.

    DIY Microphones?

Anyone built their own microphone and preamp for speaker testing purposes? The most appealing design I've found so far is at Link Removed and uses cheap Panasonic mic capsules. The response (shown at the end of the above page) and seems flat down to 20 Hz based on what I can see in Panasonic's...

    Boomy bass?

I sorted things out. Two things helped immensely:Tweaking the crossover, amp gain, phase and subwoofer positionGetting rid of a couple of songs from the test set Item #2 was quite interesting and definitely the much bigger factor. There were a couple of songs with steady deep bass pulses at...

    Boomy bass?

I just finished building a sealed cube subwoofer. Here are basic bits of info on it: Internal volume of enclosure: 3.9 cuft (20"x20"x20" external)Internal volume of enclosure after subtracting amp, bracing and driver: 2.8 cuftDriver: Shiva Mk 1Amp: RCM Akustik Detonator 110 Mk II (>150W RMS, No...

    AV3s versus 281s?

Has anyone compared these two speaker kits side by side? I'm interested in towers for music and HT. I am probably leaning towards sealed configurations as I will have a fairly low Q sealed subwoofer to round out the bass. Are there any other kits in the 300-450$USD (parts excluding cabinet...

    Nervous about poly-fill

Any ideas on ways to keep the stuffing clear from the driver reliably? I would feel better if it wasn't touching the speaker, and I bet that the driver performs better if it isn't being touched. What about creating a chicken wire cage over the back of the driver? Any other ideas, or should I not...

How necessary is polyfill in a sonosub design?

Question about the nature of digital signal in HT

I would be hesitant to amplify signals without being very confident as you don't want to damage the digital inputs in any way. Some folks successfully run digital coax over long distances, so I would be skeptical if your (presumably) short coax lengths are causing problems. Are you sure that...

    AMP350, AVA250, PE250 plate amp differences

I would mail the folks at SVS and see if they can confirm they have the Detonation 110 MkII, and whether they will sell it to you. Their page seems to indicate that they primarily sell these parts to SVS customers "unless prior arrangements were made with [their] staff." They might be able to...

    AMP350, AVA250, PE250 plate amp differences

Is it too late to look at the RCM detonator plate amps? I purchased one of those about a year ago and was very happy with its quality and performance. They were used in the early days of SV Subwoofers. As far as I can tell, they still offer this option since the picture looks pretty similar to...

    Go with DIY Bookshelfs?

I've found the DIY towers discussion to be quite interesting. However, towers may not work for our situation. Ideally, we would go with bookshelfs. However, the way our place is setup, I have the following two problems: * The speakers would probably have to be on their side * The...

    Downgrading from sonosub to compact

    > buy the enclosure from MCM for $91 Are you referring to http://www.mcmelectronics.com/ ? If so, I was able to find an item there that seems to be a subwoofer enclosure . Unfortunately, there's no picture for the item. Is that finished like the Rava, and just needs padding, driver/amp and...

    Downgrading from sonosub to compact

Infinite baffle is not an option unless I want to use the living room as the enclosure :) After my 9cuft sonosub, I have since realized a smaller sealed sub is adequate for our system, although I am probably just looking for an excuse to build another sub. The Adire plans for a low-Q sealed sub...

    Downgrading from sonosub to compact

Thanks Anthony - I had forgotten about those. Assuming I go with the 88.5l Q=0.6 configuration, that leaves me with two questions: Is there general consensus on good dampening fill for the subs? I would like to use something fire-retardant, non-toxic, and acoustically effective. Has anyone...

    Downgrading from sonosub to compact

I have a 12" shiva, and an RCM-Akustik Detonation 110 MK II (190 W RMS I believe). Right now it is housed in a 24" ID, ported sonosub of approximately 36" height. For a number of aesthetic/renovation reasons, and changes in the way we use our system, I'd like to downsize to a compact, musical...
