Hi Wayne. Subs sound pretty good but I haven't broken out the measurement gear for tweaking yet. They're pretty close to my old subs location so I'm hoping that they'll measure similarly. Pete
The measurement was taken with only the sub hooked up to a pro amp w/o xover, EQ, or rumble filter involved. My guess on the rising response would be an inductance "hump" similar to the Blueprint drivers. With a typical xover freq it should'nt be a problem. Pete
Dave, the HT is in a sunken family room. The master bedroom is directly above. Hmmm...come to think of it, the wife may like a good soundtrack.....:D Jordan, thanks. Using the ganged caps and the overall size of the xover it seemed like the only way to go. Pete
Hi Tony. Been wondering where you got to. DIY highlights? Same shit, different dust. :D http://home.comcast.net/~bcwwkg/birt...dia_center.htm http://home.comcast.net/~bcwwkg/m8n_mtms.htm Pete
I'm building a set right now for my brother. I'm using the M8ns and the Vifa ring tweeter. If you look in my thread at HTGuide, you'll see my list of caps that I purchased from Madisound. I have some of the smaller values left if you want some. Pete
Nice work Mike! I opted for a Marchand XM-9 xover because I am electronically challenged :). I use it on my B&G RD50/Dayton 7" aluminum line arrays with a xover at 500Hz. I have also had to insert 2 passive notch filters to tame a couple resonances but would love to do it actively as well. I...
Yea, I'm not a fan of poly myself. Lacquer is the real deal, but you really need spray equipment to do it right. Glad to hear it worked out OK for you. I always forget about the spray on polys. Pete
Yes, scratches are hard to repair. The poly, when sanded, turns white and it's almost impossible to feather back in. The good news is it's very durable. To fix what you've got, wait till it's completely dry and flat sand with a block. Sand until all the surface is flat again. Wipe down with...
Poly is not very forgiving and tough to touch up. Satin will hide minor imperfections in the veneer. My advice would be wipe it on. Thin the poly with ~10% naptha and use a lint free cloth to wipe on. Apply thin quick coats as it will dry pretty quick. Avoid trying to recoat before it has...
It doesn't take a lot of force to have it adhere. Biggest concern is equal pressure and panels that are not exactly flat. To solve both issues, lay a piece of good quality foam carpet padding directly over the veneer and then put a flat panel of MDF or whatever on top of it with the weight on...
I feel the same way about ported subs, or speakers for that matter. They just don't have that clean sound that I prefer. And by the time you tune really low, you lose a lot of the additional output of the port, so why bother. Pete
Bubbles are usually caused by trapped air or not letting the contact dry enough and trapping the solvent gassing off. Either way, a pinho;e thru the veneer should fix it followed by some pressure with or w/o heat. General tips would be: Use a stipple roller cover made for contact cement...
Too much glue in the bisquit slot and it could wind up splitting the MDF. You may also want to allow some extra dry time before final flat sanding to insure you don't wind up with "bisquit sized" depressions from the bisquit/MDF swelling and causing a bulge. If flat sanding is done too early...
My suppliers don't have it yet. I don't think it has the gap filling properties of poly glue tho. Water proof vs water resistance is a plus for some applications, tho. Pete
Way better to address the issue of a noisy PC from inside the case. Quieter fans, isolating HDs and anything mechanical, and case damping is the way to go. Unless you know the freqs involved, specific sound absoption info is useless. Basic rules of freq absorption are to put the absorber in a...
The best blade for plywood is probably an ATB (Alternate Top Bevel). It'll produce less tearout on the crossgrain cuts. One foolproof way to get a clean cut is to make one pass with the blade set at ~1/8" deep, then make another pass to cut thru. Flush trim router bits usually make a mess of...
I used MJK's Mathcad worksheets. Check it out at Quarter Wavelength Loudspeaker Design. The problem is still line length, tho you can probably model a much more tapered line. It didn't last long. Just an experiment. Sounded fine, but not enough for the huge size. I went low Q sealed, as I...
I agree that if you really want a poly finish, to just use poly and forget about tung oil and shellac. The finished product will look identical and you'll have a better finished product. Thin the poly down about 10% and use a rag to wipe it on for that hand rubbed finish. Pete
Looks like it would take ~500W with the AV15 to break even with the 2 Shivas (assuming sealed enclosures). Of course, the AV15 could handle a lot more power, but at what cost. Pete
