AXIOM vs SWANS DIVAS part 2

Other factors that swayed me to Axiom over the Divas was a large room (39 x 22 feet), relatively modest amplifier power (100 wpc nOrh Le Amps for the front mains and 65 wpc Outlaw 1050 receiver for the other speakers), and the higher sensitivity of the Axioms. Also, I personally don't care for...

AXIOM vs SWANS DIVAS part 2

One reason I chose Axiom over the Divas was the lesser weight of the Axiom VP150 center speaker. I am required to set the center directly on top of my RPTV and, having read reports of sagging of the set top when using heavier speakers, I felt it safer to go with the Axiom. Just another factor...

My thanks to Gregg Loewen for a great job calibrating my sets...

JasonRH, That's a good question. As Andrew_Sch pointed out, the picture on the Tosh direct view is great to begin with. Black levels and color accuracy DO appear improved to me after Gregg's calibration of this set, but I must admit the improvement is not as striking as that seen with the...

My thanks to Gregg Loewen for a great job calibrating my sets...

Gregg visited my home two days ago and spent about 8 hours calibrating two TV's -- a Toshiba 34HF81 direct view and a Pioneer SD-533HD5 RPTV. I couldn't be home for the Tosh calibration but did arrive in time for the majority of the Pioneer's calibration. Gregg took the time to go over, in...

    Raleigh area ISF?

Jon, Perhaps you can work something out with Gregg Loewen of this forum, on his upcoming June tour through a portion of the southeast (see link). He will be calibrating two sets for me on this tour. I can't wait! http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htfo...threadid=56041

    Pioneer 533--Inputs on which side?

Chris, As you face the front of the 533, the bank of jacks on the right rear ranges from about 33 to 39 inches (give or take an inch) from the left edge of the set. They are also 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 inches above floor level. Hope this helps.

    Pioneer 533--Inputs on which side?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Chris, but as you look at the front of the set, the inputs are on the right rear. Good luck!

Interested in a TN, Miss, Georgia, Little Rock, Charlotte Tour by Gregg Loewen?

Thanks Gregg and KevinB. Gregg, I would be very interested in your coming to Nashville to calibrate my Pioneer SD-533HD5, but I'm in the process of moving and won't be into my new house until the first of June. Will this time frame work for you?

Audio dropouts: are these usually due to the discs, the player, or the receiver?

I have a Panasonic DVD-RV80 DVD player and Outlaw 1050 receiver. Several of my DVD's exhibit multiple brief audio dropouts. Is one of the links in the chain more likely to be at fault than the others? When the culprit is discovered, what recourse is there and how successful has pursuing this...

    Panamax -- where to buy?

Jeff, I'm interested in the new Max 5300. I couldn't find that model in James' link to consumer-direct. I'll check on Yahoo.

    Panamax -- where to buy?

I am interested in Panamax surge suppressors/line conditioners but am having a hard time finding a source (especially a discount source). Do any of the usual internet vendors sell these? Any other recommendations? Thanks.

    Banana Plug Bafflement

I am planning to put together some speaker wire and want to use banana plugs. However, after searching some previous threads, I'm still confused enough about the options -- dual vs. single, crimp-on vs. solder vs. set screw, side vs. end holes, etc. -- to make a decision. I know it's not...

    ? re: D-sub 15 (VGA) input on Pioneer SD-533HD5

I am a bit confused as to what sources can be routed to this input. I read in one thread that it accepts only a 1080i input, while someone else said it would also accept 480p. What's the answer? Thanks.

    Help with speaker stand size/placement?

Ron, As Doug stated, the most important thing is to get the tweeters of your main speakers at (or directed at) ear level. The "directed at" factor is particularly relevant to the nOrh drum speakers, which have a slight upward tilt. As best as I can determine, seated ear height is...

    $700 for surge suppressor/line conditioner -- recommendations?

I admit to being essentially clueless on this topic. Reading the various manufacturers web sites confuses me even more. I hear great things about b-p-t gear, and I read the AVS Forum's Special Guest interview with b-p-t's Chris Hoff in August. I gathered that the b-p-t units don't include...

    Just purchased Pioneer SD-533HD5?????

Matthew, This shelf from Bed, Bath, and Beyond might work with the Sony. The two adjustable rear support feet only extend for about 5 inches, however, and the Sony set has a very sharp drop-off in the back (after the first 10-12 inches). I'm not sure if the leveling feet are far enough forward...

Speaker placement issues w/ separate 5.1 and stereo systems

I am considering segregated 5.1 and stereo systems in the same room. The smaller, stand-mounted 5.1 front main speakers and the larger (but still on a stand or pedestal) stereo speakers will be flanking an RPTV. A subwoofer will be used only with the 5.1 HT system. Are there any specific...

Ported vs. sealed speakers for HT/music

I am considering 5 identical direct-radiating speakers all around (+ subwoofer) for my HT/music system. It is my understanding that ported speakers give more bass than non-ported ones of similar configuration, while sealed speakers are quicker-responding. In other words, ported might be...

    Portable DVD players

Jim, Check out the Sharp 8" at Costco. I don't personally know anything about it, and I'm not sure if it's progressive. For some reason, I thought all portable DVD players were progressive. I may be wrong, however. Good luck! http://www.costco.com/frameset.asp?t...=10012303&log=

    Adjustable vs. fixed-height speaker stands...

Most people seem to be using fixed-height stands for their bookshelf speakers. It seems reasonable to assume these would be more stable than adjustable stands. However, being able to experiment with optimal speaker position, the versatility in adapting to different speaker sizes, etc., appear to...

New Toshiba xxHX81 HDTV's -- where to buy?

The new Toshiba xxH81 TV's are available now or will be soon at Best Buy, the usual internet vendors, etc. However, I've noticed that very few, if any, of these same vendors will be carrying the xxHX81 sets. If true, where will one be able to purchase these higher-end models? Thanks.
