I agree that they're not mutually exclusive, and funnily enough I never said they were. It's just that for me, at least in terms of Ebert's reviews, one of them isn't even particularly relevant. If we can find a reviewer who 100% adheres to logical consistency and approaches all films under...
I'd prefer a critic to be honest, rather than consistent, and on that basis Ebert remains my favourite movie critic to read. He'll give you reasons why he liked or disliked a particular film. If you don't agree with the reasons or his conclusion, so what? He's NOT telling you what to think or...
Well, the final episode really exposed the agenda RTD has been working towards - he has shamelessly subjected a family audience to the most spectacular and moving episode of the show ever made. And in prime time, too! I shall be writing to my MP. Harumph.
Wasn't there a documentary about Leary's unlikely friendship and lecture tour double act with G Gordon Liddy? I vaguely remember seeing it a number of years ago.
There do seem to be pros and cons for both sets, but I've also got the UK release and it's just a lovely object in itself. Beautifully presented collecton. I don't think you'll be disappointed by it in the slightest.
And after all the hype that seemed to go on forever, the show finally aired tonight and was... ..pretty great. Very enjoyable stuff for kids and grown-ups.
I'll add a vote for The Phil Silvers Show. As others have said, Bilko has been on the BBC almost constantly over the last 20 years or so. It's the best-written, fastest-paced and funniest of the old sitcoms, IMHO. The whole cast are terrific, but Phil is so consistently brilliant that this...
I'm starting to get the vaguest notion that you're not a fan! You're right, of course, that popularity doesn't have a direct link with quality, but I think you underestimate the appeal these shows have. As more old series come out on DVD, I'm guessing they just haven't gotten around to these...
Despite perhaps not being popular with critics in the UK, my recollection is that the Quinn Martin shows were huge hits over here, just as in the States. Streets of San Francisco, Cannon, The Fugitive were big prime time ratings winners and others like Barnaby Jones, Mannix etc were staples of...
There goes a great man and a life lived to the full. There's something very classy about someone who reaches the very top in his area of the arts, knows it, and walks away to do something more challenging to him personally, knowing that he could have just given his fans more of the same for as...
Wow. So now this is the Conformists Club? Differing in opinion from the majority is a blunder? If the list of good and bad films is so definitive and set in stone, why do we have any critics at all? The ultimate destination of this line of thinking is disturbing.
There does seem to be a lot of the usual Ebert-bashing in here. Fair enough, he does seem to polarise opinion and here in the UK we don't see his TV show, so he's not on the radar as a personality. But his written reviews are really terrific - for the most part they are insightful, well-argued...
The book that did come out to accompany the Hollywood series is a beautifully illustrated piece. It did a lot to create my interest in silent movies when it first aired. Odd thing with the Unknown Chaplin series - when I was very young, Chaplin seemed funny to me, but as I got older he lost...
You're probably right, Edwin, but when Nathan Lane was announced as the replacement in London I'm sure the BBC reported that this had caused film production to be delayed several months, so there may yet be some slippage on the start date.
Just saw Nathan Lane and Lee Evans in the London production. The last-minute withdrawal of Richard Dreyfuss was a bonus, as this allowed Lane to step in and I can't imagine anyone playing Bialystock as well as he does. He deserves to have that performance preserved on film. It looks as if the...
Jack,
Oddly, my copy arrived here in Scotland yesterday and I watched the movie today with Roger Ebert's very interesting commentary. Nice packaging, great extras, a simply terrific looking print (to my non-technical eye). The movie never looked better to me.
Ebert mentions that he once...
When I first watched Blade, I was really enjoying the opening sequence with the pounding music until the fight broke out and Blade's shotgun made a miserable little pop when he "blasted" someone.
Being insecure about how well I have set up my system (am I the only one in this whole forum who...
I'd never heard of this movie until today. Just read Roger Ebert's review and if he can put it in the same class as A Christmas Story then it surely ought to be available on DVD. I'd buy it, so here's one more vote.
