The Battlestar Galactica appreciation thread (Spoilers!)

Cracking good episode, looks like the Cylons have got Gaius by the short and curlies now. Laughed out loud during the scene where he meets 6 in the flesh.

The Battlestar Galactica appreciation thread (Spoilers!)

I agree with you Chris - nice twist with the Cylon ship. I don't think all Cylon are partly organic. Pretty sure the soldiers are not. Get the feeling they're at the bottom of the evolutionary tree i.e. cannon fodder and the Cylon ships are one step above that. Maybe they see the use of organic...

The Battlestar Galactica appreciation thread (Spoilers!)

As usual another great episode on Monday. Liked what they did with the Cylon ship. Whoever is writing this stuff deserves a medal. 5 episodes and they haven't dropped the ball on one of them yet. Long may it continue.

The (slightly extreme) dangers of overclocking...

Overclocking came about because the opportunity arose to do so. Nothing to do with whether an application needed it or not. And that follows to this day. 1.5 GHz/or its AMD equivalent - fine if you're happy running Word and surfing the net. But it doesn't cut it in the real world of video...

Battlestar Galactica remake: Time to weep openly

Damm, just watched the last episode with Richard Hatch. What a way to make a comeback! No spoilers but I think this was the best episode so far and there have been no bad ones so far. For those in the States who aren't getting the series yet you are in for a real treat. The main and...

Battlestar Galactica remake: Time to weep openly

I believe it had something to do with Sky in the UK putting up a lot of the money. Personally I don't understand why it couldn't have been released simultaneously. Given the rampant distribution of shows via the internet these days they're losing viewers by leaving it till next year. In an...

    All's not well with Porsche

I drive a Lotus Elise with MMC brakes (aluminum and Silicon carbide matrix), similar idea to the Porsche system very light weight and very hard wearing. However I've melted two discs on the track because they can't take the punishment they get on the track. They are fine for 'spirited' driving...

    AMD vs Pentium

The heat issue is an interesting one, since the current P4's run hotter than the equivalent AMD chips. Athlon XP-3200+ 60.4W Typical dissipation 76.8W max dissipation P4-3.2C 82W Thermal design power. Max dissipation figures >100W Click for source At the end of the day AMD has...

    Rugby

Don't know if there is any coverage in the States but the Rugby Union World cup kicks off this weekend. Rugby is New Zealands national sport and we're favorites to win this time round. The US is there, currently ranked 14th in the world. First game for the US is on Wednesday the 15th of October...

Anyone use synthetic motor oil instead of regular?

Just to expand on some of the comments. Modern engines are build to much tighter tolerances and require far less time to bed in. In fact as has been mentioned some manufacturers start with synthetic oil. For older engines that have been running regular oil for some time changing to synthetic can...

    My Sony STR-DA4ES is RUINED!

I don't understand why you are taking this thing back to the repair shop at this stage. They have made it clear the warrantly is toast so the least you can do is have a go at cleaning it up and seeing if it works first. I also don't generally trust repair shops to do the 'right' thing.

Is there such a cable as an S-Video to Coaxail or Scart?

Buy her a cheap DVD player. The video quality out of a PC via Composite/S-Video is generally rubbish anyway. You can get Scart cables with s-video plus audio cables at one end and a Scart plug at the other. Have to make sure its wired up in the correct direction i.e. the non-Scart plug end is...

    Europe has the coolest cars!

You can buy them in Europe. Out of production now (800 made). They are really just a hardtop version of the Elise. They are road cars and came standard with a 190hp engine. There are a few in the States being used on the track as the original Rover engine doesn´t meet US specs. The Prototype...

Jay, you can buy one today in the US from Prototype Racing with a Honda K20A engine (240HP). Acceleration tests can be seen here. 0 - 60 in 3.7 seconds. Walking away from a Porsche at 130mph There are a few options here in Europe, one company offers a Twin Turbo 380hp Audi RS4 engine...

Not one but *two* supermassive black holes discovered in another galaxy.

But this is only the first they`ve found. Given the vastness of the universe, I can't imagine that a collision hasn`t already occurred somewhere else. We just haven't observed it yet. Ian

    Marantz...why do European models differ?

It's not just color they differ on, it's features as well. I bought a Denon AVP-8000 in the States a few years ago. It was Denons top of the line processor - the US model got a tuner and the European model the AVP-A1 did not. Ian

What upgrades will increase performance on my PC?

Be very careful when upgrading Dell computers. They don´t stick to ATX specs. Installing a new M/B can result in toasting your whole system as they use a non-standard power connector - it will fit your motherboard, but it wired differently (I wonder why)...

    Boosting Radio Reception?

You need a better antenna or a more sensitive radio, aka World receiver. The reason why you can hear it so well at night and so poorly during the day is the ionosphere. Shortwave or AM signals use Sky-wave to achieve long transmission distances (they bounce the signal off the ionosphere). The...

Opinions please: MSI or ECS for new AMD Athlon Computer?

I won´t comment on the MB other than to say VIA chipsets tend to have more problems than Intel chipsets (from a HTPC POV). But you can´t beat the price of an AMD system. I would change the Video card to a Radeon - the concensus is ATI produces the best picture quality, thanks to its 10 bit DAC...
