Frank, Happy New Year to you too. (Sometimes it's good for the soul to be 'detatched' from the computer :)) Now I really need to see the criterion early release. Best regards, Tim
Top 10 Movie DVDs (with DVHS snuck in): 1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Extended Edition 2. The Star Wars Trilogy. One less reason to keep LD in the rack, but not dumping yet. 3. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - DVHS Better than the DVD by far...
Note: As a video format, WMV-9 is dead. The vast majority of the CODEC will remain in the form of VC-1 on both HD-DVD & BluRAY, but those players will not play WMV-9 disks. That said, if you roll your own movies and want to use an HTPC with enough horsepower, WMV is pretty slick.
This is a style vs substance movie, but I liked the epic style/scale. My expectations were low going in and exceeded. This was a good summer for epics even if the results were a mixed bag.
There are worse RoadRunner alien zombie on space train movies :) I have seen the EncoreHD (not properly formated) Thing recently, still looking forward to disk. Tim
Adventures of Robin Hood Aliens: Special Edition Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Special Edition Citizen Kane Gladiator: Signature Edition (DTS-ES Discrete) The Great Race It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World LOTR EE's (including ROTK not soon enough) Patton Starwars: Empire Strikes Back (imminently)
A downcoverted HD media will in many ways be a vast improvement over SD video - higher bitrate, hopefully less/no edge enhancement or other artificialities masking a lower bit rate and resolution maxed format. It would be a SuperDupperBit DVD!!! DVD upconverted is garbage in, garbage stretched...
I'll definitely go back and watch the LD then, I didn't bother cause I would assume it would be better. I was watching on a 59AVi 720p upconverty, but I'll go back and try via an RP82 SDI (more apples to apple because I scale the LD to native rate through the same scaler). Thanks for the heads...
Nick, I am glad Garey got around to checking before I did. Sorry for the delay. I did see negligible difference, which to me is good since given the source material & my guess that the collections would suffer more from compression, the result was OK. Except for lack of a bunch of extras...
I will check to see if it's the same transfer. Frankenstein and Mummy werw great remasters so I didn't sell them. Vol 1 and 2 transfers weren't as good for whatever reasons (e.g., more compressed.
There is never 100% objectivity (and a small touch on Denon bias... because it's good). I think the missing ingridient is cost benefit for features & quality vs price. The last 2% that most mere mortals cannot perceive is not worth twice the price (IMHO).
Don't forget Life of Riley, I would say Flinstones one ups Honeymooners+Riley, with later excursions into My Favorite Martian, etc. Is Season 2 confirmed????????? I bought Season 1 on LD many years ago and no other Season Box sets followed. Not releasing every season on DVD would be criminal...
Picking a red laser format & over compressed CODEC will kill it as fast as (the old) DiVX. It will have a price premium as economies of scale are built, but there needs to be a quality premium.
DaViD, You may have partially addressed this already. Did one of your favs on the BenQ (something like 5th Element Superbit) look as good as it did on your old setup for comparitive purposes? Tim
I do overscan in 4 values from seeing the edge. I too will go for the corner anomoliesin change for the content.
Did another service convergence (necessary after a WID or HIT change).
Cannot find STH1 in the service menu scrolling through the values. Any help?
Tim
Not a stupid question, but it is important to remind folks that "Full" and HD (1080i) are two completely different modes. Full for the incorrectly named "anamorphic" 480 (i or p) DVDs.
Tim
John,
All choices are personal, and I'm glad we have choices. I stuck with the DST-3000 for a variety of reasons. Unlike the Sony you can set the translucency, you can trigger the partial screen listings through the channel forward and back buttons, and you cannot beat the DST Advanced...
