FWIW. my Overture 3s still anchor the living room stereo-only system, and the IL60s and IL36c still pull home theater duty. The former have been in constant use for 17 years and the ILs for 13 years, No changes in sight. A lottery win would get me some nice Revels, though.
Thanks for the link, Gene. My IL60s have worked perfectly for almost 13 years now, but one never knows when that one little resistor might fail. I'm collecting all the info I can for that inevitable rainy day. I don't want to ever need to replace these treasures.
Probably the best subwoofer tester of all time has left us prematurely. Tom's rigorous scientific approach to high fidelity measurements and the conclusions drawn from them alienated him from many in the "Audiophile" community. That is of no consequence. The body of his work remains as a...
My mother was a classically trained pianist who inexplicably never, ever played at home; and my dad seemed to have no interest in music whatsoever. When I was 10 in 1958, I asked for a record player for Christmas. What music I could pilfer from others and joining the school band established my...
My 7.1 setup is very similar to yours. I run the sides bipole, and they are wall mounted at 6'. The rears are direct radiators against the rear wall 1' in from the corners at 7'. And they are 5' behind the listening position. Very, very happy with the results. Since the advent of DD, et al, I...
Let's all hope that when Chris and Ron finally get around to viewing this film that they will become Formula One converts. Earth: Formula One and soccer. USA: NASCAR and football. Go figure.
Wasn't sure I would be prepared for onslaught of drama, tension, and effects that early reviewers have remarked about. I needn't have worried. "Gravity" is spellbinding cinema. The 3D effects were well implemented. Especially when her face is refracted in one of her tears floating in the cabin...
Actually this makes my MTT cycle complete. I have them all. I think it is his best work in the cycle. The others seem too slick and smooth at times although the playing is flawless, and the sound is superb. My other 8s are the Solti/Chicago on LP, Abbado/Berlin on DG CD, and Nagano/German...
I vividly remember running into him (or at least passing by him) literally one evening on a downtown street in San Francisco. This was in 1973 or so when I was stationed there. Obviously he was there working on his hit series "Streets of San Francisco" with co-star Michael Douglas. I remember...
Thanks for the heads up. At least I'm in the same time zone so I won't have to hurry home. Time for the grocery, haircut, mistr..., uh. Yeah. Got a couple retirements at work on Friday so I am compelled to fix a tasty auf Wiedersehen dish. I think M8 and Mexican 5 bean salad from Guanajuato will...
Mahler by Maazel, fascinating. My experience with him is limited to Sibelius w/ the Vienna Phil from over 30 years ago. I recently read that some members of the NYPO found him distant and uninvolved on the podium. I'll try to catch this Friday's 8th. I've read nothing about his Mahler though.
Two sites that I have used for years in helping me determine which ones to purchase among the many Mahler recordings available are the ones by Deryk Barker and Tony Duggan. Both are long-time members of the Mahler List (as am I), and both are incredibly knowledgable about the Mahler discography...
I know the story. Some say the songs caused the death of his daughter. I doubt that, but death did run in his family - his brother, for example. Sure would like to hear some of Alma's compositions. Greg
I think you got me wrong here, Paul. My point was that Ms. Channing must in fact like Mahler. Otherwise she would have probably turned down the offer to speak on his behalf. I think it's great when celebreties show their human side and speak for their artistic preferences. And her choice will...
Your five suggestions all apply with me. But it goes way beyond that. Mahler struck a sympathetic emotional chord with me over 35 years ago. Goosebumps and shaking my head in disbelief. Yes his symphonic constructs are very elaborate and complicated, and yes his contrapuntal techniques and...
I agree, and I hope to hear this recording someday. Reminds me of the "Harvard Lectures" by Leonard Bernstein back in the early 70s. IIRC the last lecture was almost entirely devoted to Mahler's 9th Symphony and his use of appogiatura in it. I may still have it on reel-to-reel out in the garage...
Why are you tempting me with this stuff? It's not like I don't have enough Mahler. Now there's "Mysteries" and "Little Drummer Boys" and ... It's fun to hear how others try to interpret what Mahler was saying through his music. Futile, but fun. Last summer I had the opportunity to...
Sadly I haven't listened to any version of the Second in over three months. Responsibilities sometimes keep me from the "sweet spot" between those Infinity towers for longer than I wish. Videos are so different. They focus in on soloists and the conductor. Not even close to the "live"...
So from what I understand from HTF this is your first post and you used it to answer my query. I am eternally indebted. I have a couple days off next week and will attempt your suggestions. I'm no expert with a solder iron so if I see myself getting in too deep I'll call in the pro at...
Not familiar with them at all, sorry to say. I would imagine that they were done in concert near the time (like within a week or so) the CDs were done. When orchestras make recordings they like for it to be very near the time when they performed it live so it's fresh in their minds. However...
Well, I found these sets at an estate sale. Bernstein's early 2, 3, 4, and 5 were what got me started back in what, 1972? I've had his late 5th for years and enjoy it very much, but not as much as the Mehta/Teldec (can't find it right now). And I'm very partial to the most recent Boulez...
No new SACDs of Mahler on my part since the Fischer 2nd. I have acquired two complete Berstein recordings of the symphonies though - the early Columbia and the later DG. Fascinating hearing how his interpretations changed over the years.
Ironic that I found this ancient thread about the same time as Casey. I've been using a Sony DB930 for years with no problems whatsoever. Now...no rear channels at all, and the center channel comes and goes with no rhyme or reason. I am disappointed beyond consolation. There have some...
So the 8th is still out in limbo, but Klagende Lied got rereleased as an SACD. I didn't buy it because I already had the CD and Boulez' LP. I know some of you old timers are out there 'cuz I checked. Any new Mahler recordings flippin' your lids these days?
