A passive sub leaches its power off of another channel usually through the crossover. An active sub has its own power source independent from the other channels. The advantages of the active sub is twofold. The first, it makes use of an active crossover. In other words, the low frequencies...
Just the tone of the question.
I believe cables of equal gauge and length will sound the same.
I hate to tell you this, but the results of your poll will be horribly skewed. You posted this in the Cables/Connections forum which is populated by mostly believers. For a more accurate...
Lee, I didn't realize you were asking for non-believers as well, because your first post inferred only believers should post.
I don't believe audio interconnects of reasonable length (3') will make a difference.
Binding posts are used with amplified signals (speaker cables). Because of their flexibility in different connectors (spade, banana, bare) they are very popular.
RCA connectors are used throughout audio and video interconnects (line level signals) mainly because of the industry standard. I'm...
Jeff, I don't believe that cables of 3 feet or less will make a difference, if any at all. If you're done with equipment spending, then you make want to look at other cables though if it makes you happy.
The only problem I see with speaker cables is that I'm willing to bet a 30 gauge cable will sound differently then a 12 gauge. However, if you use Home Depot 12 gauge versus high-end 12 gauge I don't think differences will exist.
With interconnects, it doesn't seem to really matter on the...
Tan, you fail to see the problem that's current. Typically, cable-believers DO NOT believe in blind tests. Cable non-believers DO. That's a problem that's pretty hard to solve. Cable-believers cry foul because blind tests typically do not favor them.
You could tell me I'm wrong, but I'll...
Mike, a correct rate of 80% is very valid to me. However, the testing methods and repetitions are also very important. If you do have a copy of it somewhere, I'm sure a lot of us would want to see it.
Bill, by strong statement I was saying that you supported the notion of double blind tests while most cable-believers DO NOT. It has nothing to do with what you are saying.
John, everyone has a different perception of what a high end cable is. We tested XLO Pro 100 Interconnects, does that...
I don't think JBL is in the same class as Carver, NAD, etc anymore, but I see them as one of the best bang for your buck manufacturers. Their low and mid line speakers are especially strong. I have the S series setup myself.
I only have one problem with the buy it if you like it scenario. If you know what you're doing, then so be it, but frequently someone comes along with a $1000 dollar system and people will recommend $200-$500 worth of cables. Sure we can sit blindly and turn the other way.
What happens when...
Thomas: Nero copied music files to the hard drive first before writing to the CDR. But of course, I absolutely agree with you as to the winner goes the pizza. :)
Mark,
Basically, it goes back to my long held belief that whatever blind test is conducted gives us only information about those participating in the test. Nothing more, nothing less. (Mark)
Your stance as an elitist CABLEGUY is duly noted.
If you refuse to believe we could have come up with...
Chu: I'm assuming you're referring to our CDR tests where we only went 4 trials. Originally, the wager was that the listener must correctly identify 16 out of 20 tries in order to win, but this was reduced to 8 out of 10 in order to leave time for the rest of the tests. So out of 10, the...
Bob, I absolutely know what you're saying. I was rather disappointed myself when no one could distinguish the 15 foot cat 5 rca cable. This is a cable I put together myself so that I'd have a control test to be able to tell the difference. I intensionally made it long to increase the chances...
Bob: There appeared to be no differences in volume.
Lee: In terms of 1 and 2, I think the vast majority of us will fit in that group. I wish I had very high end equipment for further tests, but I don't. Most likely I'll never own equipment of that caliber, but there's those of you who do...
Over the weekend, my friends and I completed a series of blind tests. We were curious as to whether or not expensive cables made that much of a noticeable difference. Posted below are the results from our testing. To sum everything up, we did NOT find a difference with different cables. If...
RG6 uses an 18 gauge center conductor with a braided shield. RG6 also comes in a quad shield form to add additional shielding. DSS requires RG6 cable.
RG59 is cheaper, thinner, and generally more flexible. But because RG6 carries a better signal, it's also probably worth the small extra...
It's been some months, so my memory may be a little off. The Mirages sounded ok, but they lacked clarity and the sound seemed to be garbled to my ears. If I closed my eyes, I could imagine the sound coming from two distinct speakers, with a lack of a clear stereo central image.
The S312s...
I have the JBL S312s myself and preferred them over a Mirage model (don't know which) of similar cost. However, if you're looking for better base response, the S312s won't deliver until moderate or higher volume levels as well. A sub would probably be a better solution to that.
