Quick and dirty (and sneaky) sub demo material

Yeah, Richard, that's what I used too - a 2 pole standard width breaker that gave me 2 20 amp circuits. Mark, some distribution centers also take 1/2 width breakers - if you can't find or otherwise use a double you could replace a few. Regards.

My sub sounds better after EQ'ing it using the BFD, but...

Dan, Please post your final filter settings... inquiring minds want to know! :D I agree with Bruce that you'll probably want to notch your sub volume up a bit... I'd do mine about another 6-9dB or so if my curve looked like yours. That should give you a nice rising response from 80-20Hz...

My sub sounds better after EQ'ing it using the BFD, but...

Stab in the dark, I'd try 2 filters: 31.5Hz, 15/60 BW, +2dB 50Hz, 23/60 BW, -14dB You might also set your xover at 90Hz, if it's an option - 100Hz if it's not. I'm assuming it's at 80Hz now? If you don't want to mess with your xover, maybe an additional filter: 80Hz, 8/60 BW...

My sub sounds better after EQ'ing it using the BFD, but...

Out of filters? Nonsense. You could always loop the output from one channel into the other - and get another 12 filters! Regards.

    Center channel woes

Joe, If you disconnect your mains does the center channel sound improve? If so, you may have a phase problem. Oh, and you don't have the TV producing any sound, right? Regards, Mark

    Best speakers money can buy

Bhagi, Well, there's cost-no-object fantasy and cost-no-object reality. Er, yeah. :b The thing is, I could see myself eventually owning the system I described. True, we're talking a $45K speaker system - but I could, potentially, actually buy a system like that. A fantasy cost-no-object...

    Best speakers money can buy

It depends on your tastes and the target room. Personally, I like the B&W Nautilus 800 line of speakers. If I could afford it, I'd have Signature 800s in front with N802s as rears with a Signature HTM for the center. I also really like the Revels and the Martin Logan lines. However, the...

    Room peaks tamed with BFD

Dzung, -R = "Raw" C-weighted SPL reading -C = "Corrected" unweighted SPL The charts include raw and corrected readings for the sub only (Blue, Magenta) and raw and corrected readings for subs + mains (Yellow, Cyan). Also, without the variable phase adjustment of the SVS Black Box for Sub...

    Room peaks tamed with BFD

Hi all, I just spent all day tweaking my new BFD to flatten my in-room response. Initially I had both subs in the same corner (on the left in the picture below), but I found that the sweet spot was exactly one person wide. :frowning: The freq response of the couch was +- 14db for the worst...

BFD & SVS Black Box - Connection order?

Brucek, thanks! There was something fluttering in the back of my mind and I knew that one way was better than the other, but I just couldn't bring everything into focus. Regards.

    The charm of monopoles

I definitely prefer mono-pole surrounds in a 5.1 system. I haven't had a chance to try various 7.1 mixes and speakers - I suspect there might be some differences there but I'm not sure. Many people say that using bi/dipole speakers will give you more of a "cinema" experience due to the diffuse...

BFD & SVS Black Box - Connection order?

My Pre/pro (Sunfire Theater Grand II) to Sampson S1000 connection required an SVS Black Box to get the signal level up for proper amplification. I just received a BFD which I am going to use to flatten some wicked room nodes. The BFD has a -10dBV/+4dBu source level switch, so it could be...

    N804+htm2?

Dennis, I'm not aware of any specific web sites that detail the issues. There are plenty of web sites out there that touch on the issues though - just do a search and you'll find all kinds of crap. Yoon, Yes, all things considered it is better to have the HTM-2 with N805s. Personally, I...

    Make my speakers sound better!

I've been posting this everywhere today. :) DD 5.1 Speaker Placement Guide BTW, I recommended earlier to move the sofa forward a bit. This is only necessary if you're going to be listening to multi-channel audio (DVD-A or SACD) in addition to surround-sound movies. Regards.

Bi-Pole or Di-Pole For Rear Wall??

Try this link: DD 5.1 Speaker layout FWIW, I prefer direct speakers because I also listen to multi-channel high-resolution audio (DVD-A, not that SACD crap ;)). Regards.

    N804+htm2?

James_N_H (and all), I don't want to imply I am any sort of expert - I'm still learning too. Also, I don't want to give the impression that I have all state-of-the-art equipment - nothing could be further than the truth. For example, don't ask me about my rears. :b Still, I do know that...

    N804+htm2?

RodneyH, I believe that B&W does think that people will match the 805 with the HTM-2 and 804 and up with the HTM-1. That's how the line was designed! And yes, the CDM NT series has the same problem. Rears have the same issue too. And frankly, I do not understand what they mean by a 2 1/2...

    N804+htm2?

The real problem with the HTM-1 vs 2 when matching with the 804 vs 805 is the 2-way vs 3-way designs of the speakers. You will have phase problems whenever you mix typical 2-way and 3-way designs, because nearly every 3-way design with 3rd order crossovers has the midrange wired in opposite...

    Make my speakers sound better!

For gods' sake man! Get them away from the walls! ;) It's difficult to see exactly how they're arranged, but they look too close to the side and back walls. Imaging would almost certainly improve if they were 2-3 ft from the nearest walls. If that drops the bass of the system too much, you'd...

which cables do you use for Nautilus 804?

[donning flame-proof suit] Yoon, wire is wire as long as it's thick enough. Save your money for better equipment. I run my N804s using wire from Radio Shack (You know the one - by the small QFC on Redmond way). :) I use a fairly high-gauge "flat" cable - RS sells it in 50-ft coils for a good...

What to look for in a WideScreen HDTV........

Lies, Damn Lies... and Manufacturer Specs. Michael, Was I correct, at least, in that the reduced display resolution makes the need for full-HD bandwidth video switchers a moot point? And are there any real full-resolution CRT-based HDRPTVs out there? I'd imagine that the digital...

What to look for in a WideScreen HDTV........

One thing often overlooked is the horizontal resolution. This ties into the size of the guns, but nearly every "HDTV" sold so far cannot display the full 1920 pixels of the 1080i format. My RP HDTV is an early-generation Toshiba - the TW56X81. It, for example, has only 1600 dpi horizontal...

Any xbox owners out there? widescreen or 4:3 tv for xbox?

480p wisescreen Xbox games look awesome, and true 1080i games are reportedly on the way. Go widescreen for sure! Besides, you also get to watch anamorphic DVDs! It's a win-win situation. As far as 4:3 games being stretched... I don't mind it. The main reason is that stretching a created...

Are 2 ButtKickers too much for a sofabed?

John, Are you saying that if the EX1200 is set to the 2-octave setting, it doesn't generate the 1st octave? Or are you saying you want the 1st sub-harmonic octave to be double-punched-up? Which output from the EX1200 do you use: the subwoofer or the satellite? I find that the subwoofer...

    SVS Black box? Anytime soon?

Cheater plugs - gotta love em. My system is now mostly quiet. Not as quiet as when I was using Balanced XLR interconnects, but quiet enough that it no longer bothers me during low level scenes. All things considered, the black box gets a thumbs-up :emoji_thumbsup: from me. It would...

Are 2 ButtKickers too much for a sofabed?

I think I'll butt in... Get it? Butt in? :b Ah, piss off, I think it's funny. Anyway, I've got a queen size sofabed and a reclining loveseat. Each has it's own BK2 attached to its frame (no platforms here). It was a tight fit, but it works. I bolted the BK2 to a 2x8 (or was it...

    SVS Black box? Anytime soon?

Trent, Thanks for the info, but it's not the CATV ground. I've got a ChannelMaster whole-house video distribution system for my satellite receivers and the whole thing is grounded at the same point as the power distribution panel. It might be possible that I'm picking up some AC leakage...

    SVS Black box? Anytime soon?

Y'all remember that scene in Wrath of Kahn? I've modified it slightly.... "HUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!" I connected the black box to the S1000 and instantly got a 65dB AC Hum at listening position. That's not to say the the Black Box (BB) was to blame - I think it's actually the...
