I like the non-use of music during the 45 minute jewel heist in Rififi. The suspense really builds. I wonder if any filmmaker today would go that long without music, especially during such a pivotal scene. It really made both the director and the actors show their stuff, without music to use as...
I think my fave "happy" movie has already been mentioned: Amelie. It's the very best "feel-good" film I've ever seen. That's the very premise of the film, so no wonder... Great fun, and beautiful. I think everyone can relate to this film in one way or another. tony
:star: :star: :star: 1/2 out of :star: :star: :star: :star: Just got back from a showing and it was a lot of fun! For me, it was everything League of Extraordinary Gentlemen wasn't. I saw them both on the same day and was much more entertained by Pirates. This is what a summer "popcorn" movie...
:star: out of :star: :star: :star: :star: One word: y u c k Some more words: go see a better movie. There are quite a few decent ones out there right now. Don't waste your money on this one. tony
I'm afraid I'll have to join the camp of those who hate this movie. Entertaining??? No, it wasn't, IMO. Silly and insulting (to a movie-goer's intelligence), full of cliche after tired cliche, it was. Maybe it's the fault of the source material, I dunno. I know, I know, in movies like this...
Yep, two more Anchor Bay titles that I have rented recently: Fitzcarraldo and Sleuth both have the "stamp." You can buy both of these, so I don't think it's something special between the studio and Netflix. tony
I don't normally buy DVDs sight unseen but I've made a couple of exceptions due to the trust I have in the director: Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki, and The Dekalog by Kieslowski. And I would strongly recommend both of these films, too. I was not in the least disappointed. tony
This list (and every other list, for that matter) just goes to show how impossible it is to quantify things like this. What a waste of time!! We all know what actors we love and what movies we love. Any list that anyone makes will always have glaring ommissions in people's minds. end of rant...
I have been waiting for these DVDs to come out for years, and I have not been disappointed in the least! Anyone who loves any kind of animation should at the very least check these titles out. For those of you who are just getting acquiainted with Miyazaki's work on DVD and you thought Castle...
You might want to check out Hirokazu Koreeda, especially Maboroshi no Hikari, although I hear that After Life is good, too. I thought Maboroshi no Hikari was very atmospheric and interesting. Very thoughtful. Hope this helps. tony
Thanks for the review, Ron! Brandon, I don't know that you are necessarily in the minority. I, too like CoS better than the first one. That said, I still have found both of the films... lacking something. I can't say what. Oh well. In any case, this DVD won't find it's way into my collection...
We have Beavis and Butthead on this list, yet no Nausicaa. Someone mentioned that all the major Miyazaki films were on the list, but we seem to be missing two of his greats: Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa, and Tenku no Shiro. Too bad. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: tony
Oops! One more, if you liked Baraka-- Chronos. It's directed by Ron Fricke also, very much the same kind of film--again, very beautiful. This one, I'm pretty sure, is still in print!! enjoy tony
You might also enjoy Link Removed It's also by Reggio, with music by Philip Glass. It's much shorter, though (only 1/2 hour) but very beautiful. It deals more with animals, etc., but it's in the same vein. Baraka is wonderful, I fully agree. Happy viewing! tony
Will, it's worth the 10 hour wait!!! Seriously, this looks beautiful. The music fits, too, but I suppose we must remember we're only watching a teaser trailer, so who knows what the music for the finished product will be like. But it's apparent that the blend of cel animation and cgi as...
Todd--I'm sorry it was my painful duty to inform you of D&D's existence!! On a side note, I understand that the director's commentary alone (yes, there is one...) makes this DVD worth a rental--just for fun, of course. Apparently the filmmakers really took their handiwork seriously. I also...
Wow, I can't believe Dungeons & Dragons hasn't been mentioned yet!! Here are some gems, courteous of IMDb: Snails: I've got a new word for "stupid" now: "Ridley"! This is the Ridleyest thing I've ever heard! Marina: I'm an aristocrat! A mage! Ridley: A low level mage; completely...
Hey all--have any of you seen this? A friend emailed it to me. Good for a laugh! Gotta love the evolution of the names over the course of the movie...

Just one more thing: Nemesis may turn out to be a film that will grow on people with HT viewings. Not just the effects (which are good) but it's just that kind of movie--you will watch it with friends.
who knows?
tony
I have been interested in reading these reviews. I liked Nemesis quite a bit--much more than I thought I would. It certainly has major problems, as has been mentioned (no need to rehash here), but I didn't think the cast looked "old" or "worn out" as has been described by some critics...
I am very happy to hear this--these are among the best films of the last decade. Finally, everyone will have a chance to see these. The extra features sound great. This set will be a sure buy... [sigh] Time to start saving... tony
