Not sure if "glad" is the term I would use, but I would say that I certainly "approve" or "agree with" some:
Wings, It Happened One Night, Mutiny on the Bounty, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, The Best Years of Our Lives, All About Eve, From Here to Eternity, On the Waterfront, West Side...
Well, two of my favorites were already mentioned, "Napoleon" and "Potemkin." Actually, "Napoleon" was the first that came to my mind.
So, I think I'll pick "The Big Parade" -- it's a terrific, entertaining film that doesn't often get mentioned, and it stars John Gilbert, who was a first tier...
Golden Globes, Film Critics Awards from NY, Boston, LA, and everywhere in between, National Board of Review, National Society of Film Critics -- the question arises: do we need another film award? Why did AFI decide to get into this business? Why are their awards any more/less valid than the...
Although half the list has yet to open around here, in general, it points to a mediocre year. The early reviews on "Ocean's 11" haven't made it seem anything special, so its inclusion is a surprise. I think it got a one paragraph review in Time.
While I agree with "Memento," "Mulholland...
Timely question, since I have been working for the past few weeks on inputting all my family research into the new Version 9 Family Tree Maker program. I can take one line back to the mid-1600s, and the others to varying points less far back.
The program allows me to scan and include images...
I'll probably pass on another peek at "ET" as well. Saw the trailer with "Harry P" the other night and it satisfied any curiousity I might have had since it showed part of one deleted scene (ET in the bathtub) and showed a new "digital enhancement" the alien ship. I can pull out my LD any time...
Watched "Places in the Heart" last night. Haven't seen it in about ten years. Much improved transfer over the old LD, and the story and performances hold up as well as I remember. A really lovely story that leaves you feeling good.
Haven't used either of my two VCRs in more than a year. Only have a handful of VHS tapes and a bunch of old Betas. All my collection is on LD and DVD.
Don't even watch porn on a VCR. Unfortunately, porn never really took hold on LD, but it's booming on DVD. There's just no comparison with...
Since I'm getting back into genealogy after a ten-year or so hiatus, there's a whole list of ancestors I'd like to catch up with. Like to thank them for breeding and keeping the family line going until it got to me.
All great silent film suggestions in this thread, but I didn't see Abel Gance's "Napoleon" mentioned. One of the greatest of the era, it pioneered "widescreen" with its use of a three-panel "Cinerama-like" tryptych during the final sequence.
As reconstructed by Kevin Brownlow, it was...
Since I'm sure most posts will highlight recent films, here are a few oldies:
"Exodus" -- a small flame that grows ever larger until it consumes the frame, while Ernest Gold's great theme plays
"Two for the Road" -- against Henry Mancini's title theme, a 70ish design sequence using auto and...
Alfred Newman and Ken Darby for "How the West Was Won"
Specific piece? Tough. For Newman, it would be the title theme, for his associate, Darby, it would be the Overture, Entr'acte, and Exit choral/song montages.
Yes, Aaron, I still have strong feelings for my laserdisc collection, although I'm not sure it's "love." I don't consider it a "dead" format or have any intention to "switch" to DVD. I think of DVD as an extension of my film collection, most of which is still on LD. Those great old BW films...
Excellent film, adapted from an earlier TV version. What is especially good about Lumet's direction is that, while all the action takes place on a single set, the jury room, the audience doesn't get bored. While the viewer feels the sense of claustrophobia that the jurors feel and the...
Elizabeth Taylor -- I'd like to get her completely drunk and pump her for all she won't tell about Richard Burton, Rock Hudson, James Dean, Montgomery Clift, and everyone else she knows or knew.
"The Godfather Part IV" -- how does Andy Garcia handle being the new don. Does Pacino's son become the next Pavarotti?
"Titanic II: the Beginning" -- just what went on between Jack and that one-legged prostitute. How did Rose's family lose their money, did she or didn't she sleep with...
To the above, none of which I would disagree with, I would add "How Green Was My Valley," "Sons and Lovers," "Some Like It Hot," "In Cold Blood," and Abel Gance's "Napoleon."
As a long-time veteran of the LD days, DVD prices still seem cheap to me, although, you are right, there does seem to be a noticeable upward price creep.
Ross Hunter's "Lost Horizon" is often considered among the worst ever made. It's a textbook example of how to take a cast of talented actors and a great book and produce a gargantuan mess. Just takes money and talent, I guess.
Wonderful film! Of course, I love to eat and watching the lengthy, deliberate, preparation of the meal that climaxes the film (and nearly climaxes viewers like me as well) is fascinating and engrossing. The contrast of the richness of the ingredients, the wines, the fowl, etc. set against the...
I have seen guys answer the phone while at the urinal, but never in the crapper. A little water sound can be explained away, but the other.... I think not.
It's poor business etiquette to start or continue a conversation with someone in the stall.
>>>>>OK, but what if you are out on the town drinking with your friends and you decide to take in a film at the last minute? HUH! HUH! WHERE'S YOUR PLANNING AHEAD MOSES NOW!?!
My life does not revolve around films (not that I'm saying anyone here does) so I can't plan ahead most of the times I...
Plan ahead: I go before entering the theatre, do NOT purchase drinks, DO purchase salty popcorn (salt helps retain liquid. This also works for long car trips -- have a box of saltines handy). I almost never interrupt a film for a pee break.
This film is a gem. Quite delicate with excellent naturalistic performances by Lillian Gish and Richard Barthelmess. You're doing a great favor by bringing these little seen films to the attention of HTFers. It's especially difficult to get people to see silent films since many hold such...
