Just picked up a few nice SACDs last weekend. I found the self titled Elton John SACD, sounds great with nice separation of the orchestra in the surrounds. Also found SACDs of The Kinks Everybody's in Show-Biz and Preservation Act 1. Both sound great (stereo only) but I found them at 30 percent...
Recently got a number of HD discs. Moody Blues Days of Future Passed and Seventh Sojourn SACDs, and The Doors Perception Box which features the 6 studio albums on DVD-A discs. I think The Doors set has met with mixed reviews but I'm still enjoying some of the choices on the surround discs. On...
Just got the blu-ray audio version of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Damn the Torpedoes and it sound very sweet in 5:1 surround. Bonus tracks are very good too. I really like the blu-ray audio version of Mojo as well. I'm also all caught up now on the Steven Wilson mixed DVD Audio versions of 5...
John, It's not hi-res, but if you can find a copy on CD, Blue Moves is a great late era Elton album. It's a double CD, and I think right now it is out of print, but I like it a lot. I also really like Peachtree Road. It was not promoted well at all when it first came out. But I think it was a...
This has been a good week for hi-res audio for me. For Christmas I got 2 more Elton John SACDs, Captain Fantastic and Madman Across the Water. I also got 8 new RCA Living Stereo SACDs, and I picked up the SACD of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. It is a little bit loud, but I like the surround...
Just got The Moody Blues A Question of Balance SACD. My second Moodies sac dee, and I love it. I know some have complained that the stereo mix is a bit loud, but the surround mix sounds fantastic, and the Moodies were just meant to be heard in surround. I will probably add more of these over the...
Santana-Zebop! A nice Bernie Grundman-mastered title on an original, cheap CBS CD. Yesterday I was on a Mahavishnu Orchestra kick and listened to 3 titles in a row by them.
Just found a couple of used DVD-Audio titles and got them cheap. Got Fleetwood Mac Rumors and Doobie Brothers The Captain and Me. Now I have decide if I'm really gonna want the Mobile Fidelity SACD of the Doobies disc when it comes out. My guess is I will need it too. Recently got the Moody...
John,
The thing about the Genesis surround discs is that the stereo tracks are remixes in addition to the 5:1 tracks. Sometimes those remixes are drastically different from the original mixes and even contain elements not in the original mixes. I'm not happy at all with what happened with the...
John,
I've always been partial to the Telarc with Ormandy and Michael Murray on the organ. How does the Badea Telarc compare to that recording? It's not available as an SACD, is it? I've really been enjoying the Munch SACD on RCA Living Stereo. I know it doesn't meet the OP's criteria, but I...
The Van Cliburn 1st is very perky so you might like it more than you think. I have the Zander 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th Mahler symphonies on Telarc and like them all, but I agree, the 1st is in a league of its own. I also have the Living Stereo SACD of Mahler's 4th with Fritz Reiner and the Chicago...
John, Don't let the age of the Living Stereo SACDs scare you off. I love every one that I have gotten (about 15 so far) and that includes the wonderful Van Cliburn disc that Mike above mentioned. Another really good one is the Symphony Fantastique. I think they might spoil you because they...
John, I got the Oppo 980 about six months ago and just love it. I'm hooked up via HDMI, which is great because you have a lot more control balancing and managing the sound. One really strong recommendation is to check out the RCA Living Stereo SACDs. They are from historic performances from the...
I have a few that I keep going back to again and again. One is the Lorin Maazel & the Cleveland Orchestra performance of Pictures at an Exhibition on Telarc and the other is the Telarc Symphonie Fantastique also by Maazel and the Cleveland Orchestra.
Mike, you can purchase the RCA Living Stereo SACDs from deepdiscount.com for $8.67 each with free shipping on all orders. I've gotten a few that way, and a few at Borders as well, one for $6.99 after a 5 off coupon. The Tchaikovsky 1st piano concerto is really great. Recently I got the Pictures...
I'm expecting the RCA Living Stereo SACD Vienna soon, maybe tomorrow. It features a variety of polkas and waltzes in 3-channel stereo. I really have been loving these wonderful recordings from the mid-1950s to the early 1960s.
The Who Maximum R&B has just been re-released with a new 5:1 soundtrack. That is a good one because it features the band throughout their career. It has some interviews between clips but the performances are great. I have not heard the new DVD as I am waiting and hoping it gets a blu-ray...
I got my e-mail today as well and I'm not really happy about it. Many of the new releases in my Q are taking 2-4 months to get shipped out to me. If I have anything in my Q that is not blu-ray such as TV series or whatever, those are always nearly the first to ship no matter how far down on my Q...
I got it and I like it alot. It's a solid effort and the sound is pretty nice as well. I think I like his last album a little more, but the new one is growing on me.
I don't think the blu-ray looks as good as it could have. There appears to be some DNR, which is crazy considering the young age and condition of the film. Are companies like New Line just gonna slather on the DNR all the time or use some common sense? I think there is some improvement over the...
Matt, One quick question. I picked this up at Best Buy yesterday and I did not find a coupon inside for a $10 rebate for owners of previous DVDs of the film. Did I get ripped off on this one?
I may be in the minority here, but I prefer the Superbit version of Bram Stoker's Dracula to the blu-ray version. I like the color timing of the Superbit and I think the blu-ray is way too dark.
I'd give anything for a handful of 2-disc blu-ray cases. I have several blus which don't transfer over the special features on a second disc which I have from the original SD versions of the films and I'd love to house them together in a single case. Surely there is a demand for these!
