I have an old Onkyo Integra TX-DS838 (1997) which recently conked out (smoke started coming out of it). Estimated repair cost: at least $120. I have been very happy with this Onkyobut I have been having second thoughts between having it repaired or just getting a new one. The old Onkyo cost...
i just read this somewhere. 2 methods (there are others) by which our brains determine the location of the sound are (1)intensity of the sound and (2)timing. for example, if you stand at the exact center between two speakers outputing the same sound with different amplitudes, the louder speaker...
hello. my 3 year-old daughter recently played with my B&W 302 which i use for my surrounds (it was not mounted during that time). she pressed on that round convex thing at the center. she did that to both the tweeter and woofer and now both drivers' middle part are depressed and concave. i...
if i were you, i wouldn't take the risk.
however, i think the sound that reaches the baby in the womb is pretty much muted compared to what the mother hears. remember how sound becomes much muted when we're under the pool. probably the air-water interface deadens the sound. so i guess the...
i did a pseudo EX set-up using an prologic receiver which has no 3-channel logic and neither can the rears be set to none. i was worried i was losing some information meant for the rears. so, i tried connecting some extra speakers to the surround channels of the prologic receiver. i found out...
I currently have a pseudo EX set-up so my surround speakers have their own amp. I was wondering if I could hook up this amp's sub pre-out to my main sub L(left) input. My main amp is connected to the sub via the R(right) input. In other words, I'd be hooking up both amps (pre-outs) to the...
What are the things I need to know when buying used amps? I'm planning to buy 2-channel amp, about 150-200w/ch, any brand. But I saw a Hafler 200w/ch for $300. Is that a good price?
Just want to share a similar experience. I experienced a similar problem when turning on/off fluorescent lights. But it was my receiver that was being affected. The Dolby Digital Lights turns off and there is no sound for about one second. I tried everything, including plugging the receiver...
Sorry I had to post outside the thread. There's something wrong. My reply doesn't get through so I tried posting a new message.
Okay, I'm almost convinced.
Can anyone give me advice? My present receiver is an Onkyo DS838 that is rated at 90w/ch L,C,R and 50w/ch RL,RS. I already have a...
Okay, I'm almost convinced.
Can anyone give me advice? My present receiver is an Onkyo DS838 that is rated at 90w/ch L,C,R and 50w/ch RL,RS. I already have a pseudo-EX set-up connected so my surrounds are, in a way, externally amplified. I'd like to buy a stereo amp for external...
The Onkyo does not have jumper cables and it continues to output even when there are connections on the pre-outs. Now, my problem is finding a matching separate stereo amp. Is it just the gain that should match? Where do I look for the gain specification? How about wattage? Should they also...
I'm thinking of bi-amping my B&W 305. My main amp is an onkyo 838 (90w/ch L,C,R, 50w/ch SL,SR). Can I purchase a stereo amp, hook it to my front L&R pre-out and use this to power the B&W woofers while leaving the onkyo to power the tweeters? What stereo amp (power, specification, etc) would...
I was reading a thread on the benefits of external amplification and a question came into my mind. One person in a thread said that when he used a separate amp for his center channel, his main amp was "unloaded" and was better able to power the L & R mains. Is this true? Or does this simply...
Just an update.
I tried listening to different discs with the above mentioned set-up. I was not very pleased. I went back to my original pseudo ex set-up.

So what you are clearly saying here is that you have noticed that you can localize the rear soundfield better without the center speaker by using a phantom center. Yet you still say that the center channel is worth it. Care to explain...
Yes, it's fun. It's in continuously trying to do something or tweaking one's home theater that's fun. Sometimes, you get things right, sometimes you make mistakes.
Thanks for the comments. Are there anyone out there who also use the original LS & RS for their pseudo EX set up, instead of the...
Wouldn't a phantom rear center appear to sound from above or between the 2 side surround speakers? I believe the effect of a rear center is different since it is behind the listener.
As for the human ear. I tried and was still able to localize sounds coming from behind, though not as...
Yes, I was actually surprised to discover that despite connecting the LS & RS pre-outs (not tape monitor loop), the Onkyo continued to have output in the LS & RS speaker outs. I know this may not be true of some receivers.
Just to reconstruct my set-up:
---FL---FC---FR---
PSL............PSR...
Thanks. What I did was similar in concept. I had my main amp (Onkyo) LS and RS pre-out sent to a Yamaha to decode the rear L, C, R channels. I didn't remove the existing surround speakers connected to the Onkyo (main). I ended up with 5 surround speakers a pair of original LS and RS, and...
Kevin,
When I tried calibrating using the method you suggested, I got different results than when I used THX Optimode on Toy Story 2. With the Optimode, my adjustments were 2-3 dB higher. Which do you suggest is more accurate?
Also, my other receiver does not have prologic 3 mode and the...
i tried experimenting which works best for my room and i ended up using 1 dipole speaker for my rear center. my side surrounds are direct radiators. hope this helps.
i recently did a pseudo ex set-up using an onkyo for my main receiver and a yamaha to 'extract' the rear center channel. it's exactly as they explained. derek's site is very informative. you can use the thx optimode set-up on certain discs (such as toy story 2) to calibrate your rear channels...
i recently did a pseudo EX set-up and it was worth it. it improved even some of the non-ex titles. on some titles, the improvement is significant (eg. haunting, toy story 2, etc.) it's true that the sound is more enveloping. by the way, i use 2 direct radiating side surrounds and 1 dipole...
My problem is this. I need surround speakers. The only available speakers that are timbre matched to my existing set-up is a center channel speaker. Is there anything wrong with using a pair of center channel speakers as surrounds?
Thanks for the input. So I guess I would have to replace all three front speakers because the B&W 303 uses different drivers from the older 300 series. How important is timbre matching when it comes to the surrounds?
BTW, Batangas, Batangas is about 2 1/2 hours drive from San Juan, Metro...
I'm planning to use an old pro-logic receiver to simulate a rear center channel. I was wondering how to calibrate the 3 rear channels with this set up? Can I still make use of Video Essentials or AVIA? How do you make sure the volume of the pro-logic receiver is set right? Hope someone could...
i have a b&w dm305 for my L&R mains and a b&W cc3 for my center. i've heard of the new 303 and LCR3 and want to upgrade. would anyone know if it's worth the upgrade? also, if i only upgrade either mains or center, would the speakers still match?
