Correct, Daniel! To calibrate the audio on a system, you place the meter at your seating position and use a calibration DVD which emits a test tone to each of the 5 speakers, as well as the subwoofer. By reading the meter's display, you can determine if the volume level at your listening...
I'm a big fan of the Phase Technology Teatro 4.5 speaker. I bought two for $180 (which may be less than you can find them for) and I've seen posts of others buying them for about $220. I use them all around with Teatro 6.5 for the center channel. They have great imaging, warm (but pleasing)...
I'd like to see more Noir on DVD too. "The Big Combo" is out, and the quality of the disc is pretty good to my eyes. (I have an OLD 27'' so there's only so much resolution). I bought the Image "Double Indemnity" before it went OOP. I can only hope that Universal will re-release it.
I just saw "Ikiru" for the first time tonight! Sadly, I was the only person in the theater. I noticed the familiar Janus Films logo at the start and can't wait for the DVD release.
Not only is shipping $9, but did you notice the disclaimer on the last page of checkout? "....davidlynch.com is not responsible for damage to products that occur during shipping". So if your DVD is scratched, you have to file a complaint with UPS, I guess? All I know is other companies...
I checked my Fantasia 2000 disc and there were no visible signs of damage. The Sorcerer's Apprentice played fine...I haven't had time to check any other segments. I had a copy of Amarcord go bad...I never found any signs of damage on it, and the disc was properly stored. I've seen other...
"Dead Reckoning" is a welcome sight for us Bogey, Noir, and (best of all) Bogey Noir fans! But it is a slow week. Thanks as always for your roundup, Dave!
When my copy of "Amarcord" died (no scratches, warpage, cloudiness or cracks at all) I posted my experience in this forum. Many of the replies insisted that it was a player error, despite the fact that I tested the disc in two players prior to posting, and both failed in the exact same manner. I...
I would argue that the Criterion is well worth full retail even, if you like the film. It's got plenty of extras, including an explanation of how they "twinned" Jeremy Irons so both brothers could be in the same frame at the same time. I occasionally see this in stores, but it's becoming much...
This is GREAT news for Noir fans!! Just on the heels of the new Criterion "Killers" set! By the way, I am compiling a list of noir films based on the book "Film Noir: An Encyclopedic Reference to the American Style". I will then go through and list the availability of each film on DVD. Look...
Does anyone have any advice on the new Kino issues of Griffith's films? I'm interested in the Masterworks box set but haven't seen any reviews.
Thanks,
Matt
I got "Quills" from DDD for $7 and change. Media Play seems to be similar to BB. A few years ago, I was buying tons of CDS there at $9.99 to $11.99. Now the sale CD's seem to be $14.99 or more. In fairness, CDs have gone up across the board.
It's definitely not the player. I tried it this weekend on two friends' players... one rendered the same pixelated image as my Toshiba, and the other gave me a disc read error. I took it back for an exchange, which plays fine. I am puzzled by the deterioration of this DVD.
That's the odd thing. There's no visible separation or 'rotting'. I double-checked the hub and it looks fine. I have plenty of Criterions that work fine so I don't think it's anything specific to them. Right now I've got an error rate of 1 out of 300 DVDs, so that's not bad... yet I hope this...
It's possible, yet I've checked the player with several other discs and it's fine. Even if the PSX2 isn't a great DVD player, the disc malfunctions in the same manner in both machines. I'll check it in a friend's player this weekend and see how it goes....
"Amarcord", a Fellini movie I bought on DVD about 3 years ago, won't play right. It gets about 5 minutes into the movie and starts breaking into pixels. Then it starts freezing up. Then the sound drops out. The more chapters into the movie I get, the worse it gets until all you see is a...
How's it going out there today? I thought about going shopping this morning before work, but I'm having second thoughts. Anyone find any great deals not mentioned above?
I found this on The Digital Bits today: On 1/28, Criterion bows the 2-disc release of Ernest Hemingway's The Killers, featuring BOTH the 1946 Robert Siodmak-directed film version AND the 1964 Don Siegel-directed version (SRP $39.95). You'll get new digital transfers of each film, the 1949...
I think for a brief time Neil like the sound of CD's but later felt that the sampling rate was too low and the high-frequency transients weren't good. "Freedom" was an all-digital recording in 1988. Maybe DVD-Audio will inspire him to release his mega-box-set he's been talking about for about...
Does anyone have this? How is the transfer? I don't mind if the source elements aren't great; I just don't want to see big chunky artifacts all over the place. Any opinions?
