    Lost: Season Six

So you're saying that all of that was just filler? The point isn't that they need to explain every little detail, but that larger stuff like this should have been driving towards the central mystery. If it doesn't tie in, then it was just a waste and does make me think they were making it all...

    Lost: Season Six

Quote: Which I think is farfetched. We've had nothing to give us doubt of Hurley's ability to talk to the dead, including Jacob. Isabella on the ship was probably MiB, but at the end he was hearing from the real Isabella (imho).

Great article on all the post format war doomsaying...

I addressed that last time you brought it up. This is starting to go round and round. Buying an HD player doesn't affect portability in any way. Buying HD movies does. DVD had exactly the same barrier to adoption.

Great article on all the post format war doomsaying...

I just don't think there needs to be dissatisfaction with standard dvd for HDM to be successful. If you're buying an HDTV, you might as well have an HD player, there's nothing to lose. All that has to happen for it to be successful is for prices to drop. Since I assume they want it to be...

Your blind optimism is another's reasonable supposition. At this point the evidence just isn't in to know whether the end of the format war will make a difference in people buying decisions or not. I know I never considered an HD player before the war ended, but bought one last month at least...

True, and that may persuade you to still buy at least some movies as SD-DVDs (especially kid's films). However, most people still rent most the of the movies they watch, so you might as well have a high-def player attached to the high-def TV for your friday night video watching. Eventually there...

Great article on all the post format war doomsaying...

I tried to say this in my last post, but I still think the "incremental improvement" is exactly why HDM will succeed, not fail. The fact is, unlike LaserDisc, which required a completely different mindset, a blu-ray player is just another DVD player. The only barrier to adoption is price. OK...

Great article on all the post format war doomsaying...

The form factor issue cuts both ways. When I had a Laserdisc player and then later when I first bought a DVD player, most people I know kept saying they wouldn't buy any such thing until it could record television shows. The concept of a separate player for just viewing movies was a totally...

What Paramount Universal and DreamWorks titles are you waiting for to go Blu?

I've definitely been wondering what the first previously released HD-DVD exclusive to be announced on Blu-ray will be and when. Any guesses?

HD Rentals: The Art of the Impossible

Interesting. It's definitely whether you are throttled or not. Looking at the above list, it shows Michael Clayton BD as "very long wait", whereas it shows on my queue as "short wait". I have 9 other BD movies on my queue and all show as available now except Blade Runner, which is also "short...

    Match Point question (MAJOR SPOILERS)

I admit I was surprised by the complete lack of comedic elements. I didn't think that Allen would make a straightforward drama, and the tone of the film was a refreshing change. I still think it was odd the pregnancy wasn't mentioned. It was the catalyst that set the events in motion and I...

    Match Point question (MAJOR SPOILERS)

I was surprised that there wasn't a discussion thread on this. I realize that it's in limited release, but still. I saw it last night and quite liked it, but was wondering: . . . . . . . . . . Why did the detectives never mention Nola was pregnant? Was she lying about that, or...

I'm more cautious about The Da Vinci code. I don't think it can just ride on the book's coat tails. The book was mostly about ideas, so I'm not sure people who read the book are itching to see a film version, and the whole phenomenon got discussed to death. Given the people involved it seems...

The only thing I'll say about a three hour film is that for a lot of those successful long films, the word of mouth was that the time flew by (I find it telling that Jason didn't remember Titanic being 3 hours long). (For the book adaptations like LOTR or Harry Potter it seems like people mostly...

    Sofia Coppola's Latest: "Marie-Antoinette"

I always dislike when people criticize a movie as overhyped. How does the hype have any bearing whatsoever on the quality of a film? The film is exactly the same whether a film receives any hype or not, but when that's what a person focusses on, I always think they've let the publicity machine...

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire..Reviews

As somebody who has never read the books, I felt this was handled OK. The details of how the wand duel works is unneccesary, I feel the gist of it is pretty clear from the visuals. The fact that Harry holds his own is a continuation of things we've seen in other films. Although I've seen each...

    LOST season 2 discussion thread......

I'm pretty sure they don't track planes via radar over the pacific. I'm not sure why people think they would. Radar tracking of planes is to coordinate traffic in congested airspace, which isn't necessary over the ocean. The planes themselves know where they are, of course, and have onboard...

    Has anyone seen Shopgirl?

The key word in the sentence is _upcoming_ films. Since nobody's seen it, all you can do is speculate. Once a film is released, people want to discuss the film, and why should those of us who've actually seen the film be interested in the opinion of somebody who hasn't. Anyhow, back on...

America to go digital April 7, 2009

This isn't necessarily true. The cable companies could easily convert the digital signal back to an analog cable signal if they wanted. Since this falls outside the realm of the FCC rules, it will all be determined by how much people complain otherwise.

    LOST season 2 discussion thread......

This fit's very well with the established timeline. Hurley winning the lottery happened at least a couple years prior, since he had time to gain a lot of additional money through investments, whereas the box company scene took place only a week or two prior to the start of the show (Locke was...

    Gilmore Girls Season 6 Thread

Rory's easy acceptance of Emily's role does tend to prove Mitchum's point. However, Richard has to see that Lorelai was right and the best course would have been to encourage Rory to fight back rather than move calmly into Emily's rich housewife world. Whether she has it in her or not, I firmly...

Another "studios aren't morally responsible" study

Study: Hollywood Doesn't Show Consequences I had to laugh. Their methodology was to study "a September 2003 list of the 200 biggest box-offices successes of all time as ranked by the Internet Movie Database." They found that 28 contained sex scenes, but only one contained a "suggestion of...

    Arrested Development season 3 thread

I still didn't like the british spy stuff, but it only took a little of the episode and I agree there was some great stuff in the rest. The family kidnapping Rita in the cabin--comedy gold. "Buster knocked her out, I just gave her the roofie."

    Arrested Development season 3 thread

It definitely felt different to me, and I didn't like it. There were some funny bits, but the whole british thing I thought was awful. Enough people had the same reaction as me to show that the episode was somehow different, and I for one don't like the change one bit. Here's hoping it's back to...

I think even a July release would have been better. As I remember, that's when Seabiscuit had it's leggy run, through late July into August. In June people are still exciting about all of the upcoming action blockbusters, but once they've seen them all by mid July (and been mostly disappointed...

    OVER THERE (FX)

It's just that I'd call that "window dressing". It's the sort of thing (soldiers complaining about politics/diplomacy getting in the way of "their job") that you see in all kinds of war movies. Since it wasn't explored, just mentioned, you could have changed a very few words of dialog and set...

    OVER THERE (FX)

I'm in the middle ground as well. I didn't think the pilot was great, but pilots are often difficult, especially for ensemble shows where you have to introduce so many characters. All the reviews I've read say it gets better over the next couple episodes, so I'll watch those before judging...

It's Official: HD DVD and Blu-ray Can Limit High Resolution To HDMI Only

Several times people have implied that HDCP is somehow this brand new thing that only recent purchasers have, but the AVS poll (which would have as many early adopters as this forum) still shows a majority of the people have HDCP compatible displays (it's running about 55% to 45%). My almost 3...
