Gomorrah is definitely a good film, but I can't help but think it's a waste for Criterion to release it. It would've been released anyways had Criterion not touched it, and the difference would've been minor as it's a newer film. Criterion could have released another film that badly needed an...
I agree. It's not like we're talking about EE or something small that is a lot easier to notice on screen captures but can be tough to see when watching the film. The difference in colour in the DVDBeaver screen capture comparisons are extremely obvious and will be easy to tell when watching...
I don't understand how this can get a "Recommended" review. The color timing is all wrong in this release. There's supposed to be an orange/yellow hue that conveys the heat in the film, but it's been totally stripped out of this release. The Criterion release has it and that transfer was...
I though that maybe Sailing was released in European on SACD or something. Shangri-La is kinda meh, and Sailing is great - so maybe she did mix up the titles.
I'd like to see more Blu-Ray music-only discs, but I'd be happy enough with more Blu-Ray concerts. Like SACD, Blu-Ray music-only discs will be a very niche market - so I'm not expecting much of a push. Pioneer announced yesterday in the press for CES that it will be demonstrating Blu-Ray as a...
You and me both!
It's a great DVD and would make an exceptional Blu-Ray release. In fact, I'm interested in more concerts being released on Blu-Ray, except I prefer them to be from the smaller more intimate venues (no arena's or stadiums). I'd buy Blu-Ray releases like these in a heartbeat...
I'm really not one for Christmas music. The stuff generally makes me cringe. However, I do love Aimee Mann's "Calling on Mary" from her Christmas CD... probably because it sounds more sad than joyous. YouTube - aimee mann - calling on mary
Bingo. It's the same thing when Kevin Smith bombed with Jersey Girl and he went back to his same old retarded characters/world... and when Guy Ritchie tortured everyone with Swept Away he went back to the gangster world.
I saw it at TIFF and it's a very good film. Not sure it will get an Oscar nomination, but Mickey Rourke is probably a safe bet for an actor nomination. The film had a some similarities in feel to a typical Dardenne Brothers film.
There were some Digital Audio Discs (HDAD) on the market. The were basically DVDs that held music in either 24/96 or 24/192. Classic Records and Chesky released some titles under this format. Obviously it never took off. With CD slowly dying in favor of MP3, a high resolution format of any...
It doesn't matter how good the audio/video is, if a movie sucks (ie. The Haunting) then I really don't want to watch it again. I'll take a great film with bad A/V over a crappy film with great A/V any day of the week.
I see that Blu-Ray is getting a lot of support from retailers. The players have dedicated shelf space and so do the movies. Some HDTVs are being demo'd using Blu-Ray movies. However, I don't think it's translating to as many sales for the format as they would like. Was helping a friend...
It's good to see Criterion taking the inclusion of Blu-Ray seriously by ensuring the actual film is respected.
And black and white films can look unbelievably gorgeous in HD. I can only imagine how incredible Fellini's 8 1/2 will look.
It might be tough with a slow rollout of 1 or 2 movies...
Hopefully that means we'll see more Antonioni's on the horizon... especially Blow-Up, L'Eclisse, La Notte, L'Avventura and The Passenger. Of course if they're region coded, then it's all a moot point for me.
It'll increase the sale of BD players a bit (and might nudge the HDTV sales up slightly) but I'm sure it's not going to be the breakout for the format. It'll probably be the biggest selling BD movie, but that's not really saying much. The DVD sales for TDK will be tremendous.
Count me in for an HD release of Manhattan, Crimes and Misdemeanors, and Annie Hall. Unfortunately I suspect it'll take 2 or more years before we see any of these titles come to BD.
If he never knew to being with that Disney released GONY on Blu-Ray, I'm sure he must know by now. So either he doesn't care enough to check the transfer out for himself, or he did check and is happy with it. He doesn't seem to have a problem with the DVD transfer afterall. The reality is...
I really don't think Scorsese cares that much about how the DVD is presented. Most directors don't care. We've seen poor releases time after time and you rarely hear about complaints from them.
