when I went to Telluride, I camped. I had to get there a day early, right near noon, to get a site, but it worked out pretty well. I mean, other than being totally cold, but that was because I under packed. It's also a pretty easy place to deal with logistics like food and stuff. All in all, I'd...
I did. I really liked BURIAL PATH an unexpected amount (considering I knew nothing of it going in), but that person making noise was the guy with the wheelchair seated right by me who decided to leave during that one. Argh. I would love to see it again without said interruption. (Or the phone...
Man, when I was 20, I hadn't seen crap! I've seen about 250 movies a year since 1996, concentrating on the "canon" more and more every year, and I STILL have huge holes - the more you learn, the more you realize is out there. (Haven't seen any Pasolini, Ophuls, Lubitsch, von Sternberg, von...
wasn't the DVD supposed to also contain Soderbergh's alternate cut? Regardless, I'm interested - I had mixed feelings coming out of it, but it's definitely grown in my mind over time. I wanted to check it again in the theaters about three weeks after I saw it, but it was already gone.
I saw it in the theater. It was horribly disappointing, nowhere near as good as it seems like it should have been. The directors just never nailed the tone, and it veers wildly between cartoonish and sentimental. I liked Guzman and Clooney in it, though.
well, a different way to ask this question may be: how do you decide your blind buys? It's a safe guess that if you're a big fan of the movie, you'll pick it up even if it's a bare-bones disc, as long as it hasn't been butchered. But when I looked at the blind buys thread, it seemed like...
Play.com doesn't ship to the US, or at least didn't the last I checked. But it looks like Benson's World and Blackstar both carry it, and both ship here.
Re: KEN PARK - if by "hasn't gone anywhere" you mean "hasn't been released yet", that's accurate, but it has a distributor (American Cinematheque) that's planning a theatrical release. It's not a particularly uncommon lagtime given the nature of the festival circuit - it just started showing...
well, from all reports, Larry Clark's KEN PARK has beaten him to the punch stateside, though the Europeans have been at it for a while (IDIOTS, INTIMACY, BAISE-MOI, et cetera ...)
I think you're thinking of THE UNTOLD STORY. I think I have to give this award to a movie that I've never seen, but the description alone made me nauseous: CUTTING MOMENTS. Look it up if you want, but be forewarned.
It's going to hit US theaters some time in 2003 - currently scheduled for November 2003, although I can imagine them moving it up if it gets the Best Foreign Film nomination. So don't expect it in US DVD til after then, although I'm sure various imports will become available sooner rather...
AMBITION is the other short on SURVIVING DESIRE. THE BOOK OF LIFE is also out on DVD, as is the aforementioned THE UNBELIEVABLE TRUTH and his latest(unfortunate) NO SUCH THING.
Just remember, you asked for it. I eliminated redundant entries. ALL TIME ENDURING CLASSICS IN MY CANON: The 400 Blows 8 1/2 Andrei Rublev by Brakhage—An Anthology (only seen some of the shorts, but makes it on that alone) Children of Paradise Contempt Do the Right Thing Down...
I will partially agree in that, too often, movie critics focus more on what the movie is trying to do than whether it's successful. As a result, critics are more likely to praise ambitious movies that aren't entirely successful (cf SOLARIS) and cast their noses at less ambitious movies that meet...
preliminary results (rev. 1/26/03): 1. ADAPTATION 2. GANGS OF NEW YORK 3. 25TH HOUR 4. PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE 5. LATE MARRIAGE (out on Seville DVD [Canada] now) 6. THE FAST RUNNER (also out on Seville DVD now) 7. LILO & STITCH 8. HEAVEN 9. FEMME FATALE 10. TIME OUT (also out on Seville...
Did Miramax forget to bribe this International Academy group or what? After the Golden Globes, I'm shocked to see so few Miramax films on this list competing for best picture. Other noteworthy nominations: Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama SIGOURNEY WEAVER, THE GUYS (Focus Features) -...
d'oh! Well, I lose this challenge: I'm at 75, but there's no way I'm seeing 25 more of these between now and 12/31. Maybe I'll just start working on the 2002 list now and save myself some trouble ...
I can do both. Can't you?
Anyway, my beef (and I suppose I should have clarified this in my initial post) wasn't with movies 60 years ago, but more of many recent ones (again, NOT ALL), where smoke is used as a visual device to make a boring frame look more interesting (an especially prevalent...
apart from any personal feelings on smoking, I think it's usually a lame way to try to create some visual interest in the frame and/or give the actor something to play with and/or create simplistic characterization, and is typically (not always) a sign of laziness. (Or actors with such severe...
