    HTF REVIEW: "UHF" (with screenshots)

Thanks for the review Ron! I have no reasonable explanation why I liked this film so much, but I know I'll own it just for the Dire Straits-Beverly Hillbillies video parody, and to see Michael Richards antics as "Stanley Spadowski". :)

Return of The Living LD: A Laserdisc appreciation thread

I started collecting LDs almost from their debut, and amassed hundreds. The quality improved exponentially towards their demise, as compared with the early pressings. Alas, as I have no widescreen display, I'm not bothered by the lack of 16x9 enhancement that DVD offers. The video quality of the...

I can certainly understand your thinking on this, Packy, especially in wake of the efforts involved in the recent re-arrangement. It was just a thought. Thanks for your reply! :)

HTF's best friends: Fox and DTS!

I'm sure this is redundant, but I just want to recognize the support given to the HTF, and ultimately, the consumer, by Fox and DTS, represented so well by Peter Staddon and David DelGrosso, respectively. These executives have gone out of their way to prove their commitment to excellence, and to...

    Forum for Reviews

As I perused the "Home Theater Software" Forum, I couldn't help but notice that many of the topics dealt with reviews of current or upcoming DVD releases. I got to thinking that maybe reviews should be in a Forum of their own. They'd be easier for us to access them all, and wouldn't take up as...

Laserdisc trivia question, Indiana Jones ToD CAV?

I've owned a CAV copy of "Temple of Doom", as well as "Raiders of the Lost Ark", since they were released. I also own the Letterboxed CLV copies of both, and I prefer the CLV's, for both the video quality and proper aspect ratio. At the time of my CAV purchases, my primitive player could not...

    LD boxset Vs DVD boxset

The size limitations that are inherent to DVD packaging preclude the inclusion of the type of extras found on the best of the LD Box Sets. I have many LD sets that include 8x10 lobby cards, hard and soft cover books, CDs, lithographs, cast biographies that are actually readable without a...

Rolling Stones to be remastered in Hybrid SACD!!!

As a HUGE Rolling Stones fan, I applaud any effort made by the powers that be to improve the audio quality of their recordings. I can't help but wonder why SACD? Are these recordings too primitive to be reproduced in DTS 5.1? Where's "Exile on Main Street"?, and the later albums? How did...

I'm getting itchy for something....BIG in So Cal

That's great news indeed, David! I can't wait to see what you and Ron will have in store for the SoCal HTFers. I'm sure the activities you guys plan will be jaw-droppers! :D

David Tolsky Reviews: SONGS FOR SURVIVORS (DVD Audio)

Thanks for the great review David; way to go! I remember David DelGrosso mentioning this work by Mr. Nash when the SoCals visited DTS last May. One can only hope that other artists will take the baton, and take full advantage of the format (and the superior sound quality of DTS!). :)

Are there any Southern California meets in the near future?

Any other SoCal HTFers wanna step up to the plate and host a meet? Keep us posted!:D

Are there any Southern California meets in the near future?

Ron- I'm disappointed that I couldn't attend your get-together. I'm sure it was a blast, and should you decide to host another one, no doubt the SoCal HTFers will have a great time.:D

Are there any Southern California meets in the near future?

I'd love to see the SoCal HTFers again! David Tolsky has been gracious enough to host two meets, as well as work tirelessly on behalf of the Forum. Let's give him a break, and have another member host a meet. We'll keep checking this page, and hope for the best.;)

UHF to be realeased on DVD this year?

Yipee! I guess Stanley Spadowski is gonna let us all drink from the Fire Hose!;)

    HTF REVIEW: "Used Cars"

"Jesus Palomino!". One of my all time favorite comedies. This film struck gold with the all-too-rare convergence of brilliant writing, casting, and direction. I don't know what else to say. I love this film. (The mention of "Hollywood Knights" evokes similar thoughts) ;)

Interested parties for a meet in Orange County/LA Area

Needless to say, I feel stupid (and disappointed) for not checking this area of the HTF more often. It would have been great to see all the HTF members I've met at previous meets. I'm sure you'll be a great host, Ron, and I know your meet will be a great succcess. Somebody take some pics, and...

    Reminder for Tombstone SE buyers

Thanks for the reminder, Donnie! I've been looking forward to this release for a while, and the coupon that came with "Pearl Harbor" was a pleasant surprise. At 3 bucks off, this purchase is a no-brainer! :)

HTF REVIEW: "Legally Blonde" Hands down must buy!

When I first saw Reese Witherspoon in "Man in the Moon", I sensed her ability and star quality immediately. Her subsequent work has confirmed my first impression of her, and I would certainly concur with the other members who have recommended "Election"; I believe it to be her finest work so...

APOCALYPSE NOW: digital surround not comparable to original laserdisc's 70mm surround

Gee, I've lost count of the number of times I've found a DVD soundtrack to be lacking in comparison to an LD counterpart. No matter if it's an apples-to-apples, or oranges-to-apples (DVD DD 5.1 vs DD 5.1 0n LD, or DTS on DVD vs DTS on LD, or even DD 5.1 on DVD vs PCM on LD) comparison, more...

King Kong (original) on LD - Which version is best?

I'd go with the Criterion Kong. The supplements make this the one to have, especially the excellent and informative commentary. :)

    Eraserhead

What a disturbing film (I mean that in a good way). I remember renting it once on LD, and have cursed myself ever since for not buying it. I will definitely look forward to the DVD release. How about a David Lynch Box Set? That would be way cool! :-)

Jurassic Park DTS on sale anywhere?

My local Best Buy still has copies, however, I'm not sure if they are the "corrected " versions (there was a problem with the DTS soundtrack on the initial release). Do a search on this forum to get the info on the SKU # for the newer version.

MAD WORLD - sloppy presentation on DVD

Based on members replies to this topic, I'll be satisfied with my LD version. A marginal improvement in image quality isn't enough to make me buy the DVD. At the very least, I was hoping for a DVD duplicate of the LD Box Set version. Let's hope someone can find the footage that would make this...

Los Angeles/Orange County, ta' hell with 2002: E.T. and Back to the Future now!

Brian- I'd love to attend! It would be great to catch up with some of the SoCal HTF members I've met at previous meets. Perhaps some of us could bring something to trade or giveaway. Keep us posted. :-)

    Titanic DVD -- Sound error?

The only problem I have with the audio of the "Titanic" DVD is when I compare it to the audio of the DTS LD! :-)

I just got Lawrence Of Arabia and WOW!!

I own both "Lawrence" and "Kwai" on LD. Truly great films both. I suppose I'll have to pony up for the DVD versions sooner or later. After some of the tripe I've purchased on DVD in the past few years, these purchases will be very easy to justify. If any of you fellow HTF members haven't seen...

"The Tonight Show" w/ Johnny Carson Coming to DVD!

Carson on DVD! Finally. However, since I already own the excellent LD set, I see no reason to spring for an over-priced DVD set.

BOOGIE NIGHTS - worth the upgrade?

Jeez, this friggin' set has had me up late for about 6 nights! I have the re-release, and I can vouch for the improved image quality. The commentary tracks are what have been making me play this disc again and again. P. T. Anderson's solo commentary is very insightful and enjoyable, and the...

    THE GOONIES: Review

Ron- Thanks for the heads-up re: "Goonies". I have no reasonable explanation for why I enjoyed this film so much (being a grown man with what I believe to be discerning taste). Perhaps it's the Richard Donner Factor. I honestly can't think of a single film directed by Mr. Donner that I haven't...

    MGM:LISTEN GOOD:We're mad, mad, mad about It's a Mad,Mad, Mad, Mad World!

I'm dumbfounded that MGM would treat one of their classic film assests so shabbily. They have recently discovered, never before available on video, footage that they deem unworthy of inclusion on a DVD release? I have the excellent LD Box Set, and certainly expect more from a DVD release...
