Use Y-adapters to split the surrounds for the 2 backs, or wait and buy something that can decode 7.1 audio over HDMI. I don't think there's any 7.1 soundtracks out at the moment either though.

The XA2 doesn't support 1080p just yet. A firmware upgrade from Toshiba will resolve this though - estimated to be in their 2nd FW update release. As far as audio - if your receiver can decode the audio via HDMI then you're fine. Otherwise, you'll need to connect the XA2's 5.1 audio outputs...

IMHO, TrueHD has a more spacious soundfield to it. Whether or not you can detect the difference will depend on your audio equipment, setup and your ears. :)

If this is the case, an XA2 FW update may solve this issue. And there's some reports that an A2/XA2 update is in the works and due to be released very soon.

Yeah, that does suck. But then why does my Pioneer Elite VSX-80TXV receiver pass the XA2's HDMI signal just fine? I think it may be more of an issue directly related to the 84TXI receiver, at least from what I've heard over on AVS.

I think I may have noticed a "black crush" issue on the XA2, same as what the A2 has seen. I noticed this on The Hulk HD DVD, the night scene where the mutant dogs are attacking the Hulk. The picture during that scene is overly dark and very hard to see.

You're correct - the A2 does not have analog audio outputs, just HDMI and optical digital. The XA2 does have the analog outs though.

Well, my Pioneer Elite VSX80 has HDMI inputs but can only be used for video switching purposes. One would need a receiver with HDMI, and the ability for the receiver to play multi-channel PCM over HDMI.

Unless your receiver can play audio from the A2's HDMI output, then you'll only hear DD or DTS standard soundtracks, and not the TrueHD or new HD audio soundtracks. If your receiver has 5.1 or 7.1 analog inputs, and can't play HDMI audio then you'll need the DVD player's analog outputs to get...

I assume you used the A2's HDMI output to your display? I'd be curious to know if there was any upconversion through the A2's component outputs. Also, were you using HDMI or optical to output the audio?

From what I read from the link it won't play HDMI audio, but just pass it through. It's the same as what my Pioneer Elite 80 receiver does, so I need the A1 with the analog audio outs to make use of the new HD audio streams.

Ditto here. If my receiver supported HDMI audio I'd go with the A2, but it'll be the A1 for now - and hopefully in time for X-mas.

I've heard the A2 is a bit faster, but I'm not sure about it being *much* faster than the A1. And unfortunately, the A2 doesn't have the multi-channel analog outputs which I need, as my receiver won't decode HDMI audio, just pass it through - so I need a player that has the actual analog outputs.

I'm think I'm about ready to bike the bullet and get either a Samsung BD-P1000 or a Toshiba HD-A1 or the RCA HD DVD player. I can get the Samsung for around $200 more than the others. But my main dilemma is choosing which format, and perhaps this isn't the best time to be getting a new HD player...
