From what a local dealer told me.... The Sony GWIII LCD screens are made by LG, thats Lucky Goldstar in South Korea, and then supplied to Sony. LG has already started to sell this set on their own and will stop supplying Sony. Sony will take production to another facility, perhaps Mexico or...
Craig, I don't know what your budget is, but the Revel's are well matched with Mark Levinson gear. I would listen to the M20s at a dealership with an ML No. 383 integrated amplifier. It is well suited for your type of application. Its built like a brick shit house weighing 80 pounds and it...
Chip,
Well congratulations. More than likely B&K "voiced" (that is tweaked perfromance) of the Ref. 50 and Ref. 200.5 when operating together.
So far, I've been very happy with the Proceed AVP2 and Proceed HPA+BPA amps. I swear I can distinguish sections of music down to 5-8dB SPL.:D

Yogi, You make a valid point between Rotel and B&K amp S/N ratios. I know from listening to mid-range B&K amps that they are generally better than Rotel. However, keep in mind that amp performance is dependant, but not entirely, on power supplies, transistor stages and capacitance. A better...
On the next page of Everest's book (p.27), it indicates the background noise in a recording studio is about 20dB. These figures are all quite conservative.
Yogi, Thanks for the chart. It seems different from what I've crudely measured and other sources I've seen that have stated quiet rooms at 20dB SPL. If I have time, then I'll contact an audiologist for accurate info. Making a comparison between Proceed and Rotel is a mistake. Proceed has a...
Yogi,
No reason to be sarcastic. I don't know where you are getting your data from, but I disagree with it.
Human hearing threshold is 0dB.
Recording studio ambient noise is less than 10db.
Typical quiet living room is less than 20db.
A 30dB ambient noise level seems too high and I...
If your ambient noise level in your room is 30db, then you are correct about not hearing a 6dB change. I know the room I listen in and its well below 20db and in dedicated rooms the ambient noise level is below 8dB. Manufacturers typically state S/N at 1KHz - their best results. Across...
A 6dB change is noticeable to almost everyone. Remember, dB is a logarithmic scale. A higher S/N ratio means you will be able to make out the subtle differences in the sound stage, it doesn't have anything to do with your environment unless your room is too noisy to hear anything anyways. It...
S/N Ratio and Channel Separation are just one of the many factors that goes into consideration while selecting processors. Its not the only criteria, but it is important. If you don't have amplification that can match the processor or speakers that don't have sufficient dynamic range, then it...
Yogi,
Wow. Since you live in Middletown, CT, I would think you cut us a great deal on Mark Levinson or Proceed amps. :)
I have a pick up truck and could really help you out if got some deep deep discounts from the factory. ;)
Sanker,
I know exactly what you mean. My uncle is big into tabla practice, singing, etc. Radio shack used to make a portable tape deck with inputs for two microphones to allow for stereo recording. That generally works best for music practice, however, this tape recorder has now been...
Ron,
SteveA is right on the mark. Wireless Internet and Bluetooth capability is the way of the future. The Compaq IPAQ 3875 is the way to go. Imagine wireless Internet and your cell phone integrated with voice recognition. Thats what the IPAQ 3875 offers. Unfortunately, cost is an issue at...
Don,
I agree with you about being disenchanted with the THX certification program. About 5 years back, it meant quality, today its seems to be a marketing ploy.
From speaking to Pioneer sales reps, the DV-09 did not pass the 'blacker than black' test which is part of the THX video...
I had a DV-09 and sold it last year. It was replaced by the DV-38A. Yes, the DV-09 has some video flaws in it, but it is built like a tank and for someone who values high-quality audio, its hard to beat. The lip synch problem was on earlier runs of the firmware, it was updated by late 1998...
Geo,
Congrats on your purchase. Its a fine speaker and the sources you have are also very good. Whats important with any purchase at that price point is that you drive the speaker with equally good amps and processors.
The Revel line seems to work best with Proceed and Mark Levinson gear...
The comparison between DNA testing and DBT of audio equipment is a FALSE ANALOGY.
DNA testing involves the probablistic matching of two strains. It is proven mathematically and through statistics. The sample size is small and the confidence interval is exteremely high. The samples are...
Man I missed this thread and its amazing how big its become. This type of discussion is really meaningless, the forum goes through it every few months or so.
Some people don't like separates and some don't like receivers. Each has its own place.
Even for the HT enthusiasts like many or all of us here, the prospect of going back to tape is repulsive for the basic facts of it being bulky, mechanical wear of the tape and the lack of random access.
Since 1998, I have personally destroyed two good VCRs before putting them in the trash...
I've sold my older Pioneer Elite PRO-100 to a friend of mine that has cable TV and she cannot get channels 31-47. This is on both antenna inputs and I've set up the set for cable TV. The symptoms are that the channels come in very weak and then go away, so the tuner is picking it up, but then...
I'm using an HPA-2 for the mains and a BPA-3 for the center & surrounds.
The BPA series of amps is considered a better design than the AMP-2 and AMP-3 lineup. This is becasue of filtering and fault protection. I suggest you see one and discuss this with your Madrigal dealer.
The HPA series...
Thomas,
After the previous upgrade, prior to the current one of 30 Oct 2001, I had several drop outs in DTS mode. They are mostly gone, but occasionally come up. I will probably try the latest upgrade to see if it fixes it for all.
Proceed Upgrades
Good Luck,
Rajiv...
The M-72 is a very good amp, but I think it is discontinued, yet still listed in Pioneer's active lineup. I do know it is no longer in production. I looked for one sometime back, about 1 year ago, and could not find any new ones. The M-72 will give you a somewhat better perfromance for your...
I believe Krell & Mark Levinson both make integrated amps in the good ol' US of A. Starting price is at about $5000.
If one had the money, then go for it.
Rajiv...
John,
I think your ears are most important on this. Do what sounds right to you by listening to as many speakers as you can. One thing I keep in mind is off axis listening. Try listening to more speakers off axis and you may eliminate several brands this way.
Good luck,
Rajiv...
