Midnight Cowboy and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

FYI, these are on sale at Best Buy right now for 9.99 each. The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three never even got an anamorphic release on DVD, I was pretty surprised to see it sitting in the endcap. If you want them I would suggest trying to pick them up this week, not sure how long the 9.99 deal...

    The Commancheros

Looks spectacular. NEW transfer, excellent source materials, no visible digital BS. Buy it.

    American Graffiti Blu-ray DNR issues?

Old transfer. Edge enhancement out the wazoo. Filtered with noise reduction making the considerable grain structure a clumpy, globby, blurry mess. It looks absolutely awful. Thanks for nothing Universal and Lucasfilm.

The Stranger and Kansas City Confidential on Bluray

Amazon has preorders up for both of these for a Feb release. I haven't heard anything about this. Could these possibly be public domain or are they coming straight from MGM? Of course, I just bought these on DVD about 6 months ago.

    THE THING

...looks great! There have been some complaints about this one that I've read and I believe they mostly have to do with inflated expectations. As a realist, I believe the HD-DVD of this film looks wonderful. There are a few inconsistencies, a few shots where there is some grain, a few shots...

What makes Fox beholden to Blu-Ray?

Serious question. I know they are exclusively Blu-Ray right now, but if HD-DVD starts to look like a viable format where money can be made what would prevent Fox from releasing titles on the format? Do they have a financial interest in Blu-Ray technology?

    The Thing: HD-DVD Combo Format

From Hi-Def Digest: Universal has changed The Thing to a DVD/HD-DVD combo disc. This is bad right? The Thing has a ton of extras that would most likely need the extra disc space. Wish the studios would drop this format. Not really sure who they are targetting. People buying HD want the...

    Enter the Dragon

My review: Looks really good. Colors and source quality are top-knotch. Was SLIGHTLY dissapointed with fine detail, most scenes appear a bit soft with transfer not really resolving the fine film grain I expected to see on a title like this. Could be just my expectations rather that problem...

    HD-A1 - Severe Buyer's Remorse

I'm taking this thing back. Combination of factors which tell me that now is not the time to buy into HD-DVD: 1) The thing just plain doesn't work properly. Even with the 1.2 firmware, the thing has bugs all over the place. 2) Blu-Ray is getting serious marketing push via Best Buy while...

    HD-A1 w/ 1.2 Upgrade, Still Buggy

Purchased an HD-A1 a few days ago. Have played 4 HD-DVDs and 1 DVD and all have had at least one problem: Phantom of the Opera - popping/scratchy sounds from center channel during end credits Blazing Saddles - no sound from center channel, stopped disc and re-started, problem gone...

    720p or 1080i?

Greetings. Purchased the Toshiba HD-A1 yesterday and have a newbie question about the resolution settings. I have the player hooked up via HDMI to my 50" Sony LCD display (KDF-somethingorother). I can't really tell a difference between 720p and 1080i but haven't really done extensive...

    Classics on dvd: Estrogen Overflow?

The title of this thread is meant in good fun, so I really hope it doesn't offend anyone. But I'm actually sort of serious: The amount of classic releases have been pretty decent lately, but am I alone in thinking way too many of them are "women's pictures"? I don't have anything against...

Won Laserdisc on Ebay, Arrived Damaged

I recently won an auction for a factory sealed laserdisc of Raiders of the Lost Ark. When it arrived (almost 2 weeks after I paid via paypal) I found it to be packaged in a flattened priority box with no protection of any kind. As a result, the disc has one large crack spanning the entire second...
