    Tull - Broadsword remaster

I'm probably a bit late with this, but I just bought the remastered edition of Jethro Tull's Broadsword & The Beast. I'm very happy to report that the quality is quite a step up from the old CD and - at last - it wasn't mastered from an old LP which distorted as it got to the end of each...

Since when did Warner go bilingual on the Canadian covers?

Just received Corpse Bride from a well-known UK online retailer and the cover has english/french on it. I always thought I was safe from this retarded idea with Warner, but alas, no more. Looks like I'll have to get practically all my discs in from Amazon US from now on. Crap.

    First images from my D70s

These are the first images I've taken with my new D70s. All have had very minor PS work (tad of contrast, slight boost in saturation). I'm fairly happy with the quality. I would have preferred maybe a bit more colour straight out of the camera, but I haven't quite got the hang of the white...

D70s or 350XT - the agony of choice

If you were in the market for a D-SLR and had no lenses for either Canon or Nikon, would your choice be the 350 XT (Rebel XT in the US) or the D70s? I'm finding it incredibly hard to choose between them. The D70s is a lot heavier and feels more workman-like. The Canon is pretty light but...

    RAW converters and editors

I'm experimenting with my Canon G5 and would like to know what is the best application to use to import RAW images and maniuplate them. The supplied Canon software isn't too great. Isn't it easier just to export the unadjusted RAW file into TIFF and then play around with it in Photoshop, or...

    Heads up! New MS patches

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/Security/default.mspx Including yet another cumulative update for Internet Explorer. It's getting to the point now where we don't have chance to package and roll these out to our clients before the next one appears.

Is there a whistle that will shut a dog up?

The walls in my flat are a bit thin so I get to hear the dog belonging to the people downstairs whinge and whine quite a lot. Is there a whistle or something that will shut the thing up? I know dog whistles can be used to train dogs but I don't know if they'll do what I want, plus it would...

An odd request - Waltzing Matilda

I'm looking for some good free recorded versions of Waltzing Matilda without vocals. Doesn't matter what the arrangements are, as long as I can edit and use the files on the PC. If all this sounds weird, I'm authoring a DVD containing various footage of a friend's trip to Australia. I really...

    Actor Pat Roach has died

Pat Roach, the English 'gentle giant' who played numerous small, but significant parts in many Hollywood films has died of cancer at the age of 67. He was more famous over here for his role of Bomber in the TV series Auf Wiedersehen Pet, but his first feature film was Kubrick's Barry Lyndon...

GOOD soundcards - particularly for analogue recording

OK HTPC gurus - what's the best bet for a high quality soundcard? It needs to be able to support analogue and digital input and do it WELL. I don't want anything by Creative. Thinking along the lines of Terratec's Aureon 7.1 Universe or their DMX 6FIRE 24/96. Both are similarly priced...

    Capturing SACD audio

I have a few SACDs which I'd like to make MP3 copies of so I can play them in the car. Obviously I can't rip them the same as a regular CD so I'm attempting to capture the analogue audio output directly from the player, then extract the WAV element later. My question is - is it better to do...

Beastie Boys album infects computers with DRM

I've no interest in the group but this story on Slashdot raises big concerns. Basically, load the CD into your PC or Mac and it infects the machine with DRM to prevent copying. It's done automatically and without the user's permission or acknowledgement. Sounds like a virus to me.

WEIRD problem when installing Unreal 2004

This is an odd one. Freshly-installed Windows XP SP1 machine. All security updates applied, all software installed, yadda yadda yadda. 'My Computer' is renamed to ROBBOX1 'My Document' renamed to 'Files' 'My Network places' renamed to 'Network' (I hate that 'My' thing) All working...

Why doesn't the DVD-2900 downmix LFE?

The audio setup menu allows you to stipulate whether a subwoofer is used or not and has large/small settings for the other speakers. It would stand to reason that if the sub was set to NO, then the LFE signal would be fed through to the main speakers - just like any other 5.1 processor would do...

Bugger. Looks like the Sony DVD burner is on it's way out

Over the weekend my DRU-10W which I've had since last February has failed whilst burining DVD-R disks. I've tried two differnt Riteks, a Prodisc and an Optodisc dye-based blank and all have failed at different points. What's weird is that it seems OK on DVD-RW and +RW as well as CD blanks...

    Diana Krall's new album

Just had The Girl In The Other Room arrive today and it's fabulous. Most of the songs have been co-written with hubby Elvis Costello but the feel of the earlier albums is still very much in evidence. There's a neat cover of Joni Mitchell's Black Crow too but thankfully John Clayton doesn't try...

Howard Shore LOTR concert at the ALBERT HALL!

Well if I ain't one happy chappy. Not content with selling out the Royal Festival Hall in London next month, Howard is performing another Lord Of The Rings suite concert at the Albert Hall, London on 22nd September (Bilbo and Frodo's birthday!). This time he'll be using the London...

    Day trip to Chernobyl

I picked this up over on Slashdot but I thought it worth posting here to. http://www.angelfire.com/extreme4/kiddofspeed/ The site was made by a young Ukrainian woman named Elena who takes occassional motorcycle trips into the 'dead zone' around the area where the Chernobyl nuclear disaster...

Adding wireless to existing ethernet network

I run a Netgear DG814 DSL modem/4-port router which currently provides networking and DSL access to my three PCs. I want to add wireless capability to connect another (potential) PC elsewhere in my home. I know very little about wireless (well, less than that really) so I need a few...

    God I hate PayPal

Rant on: Despite making it VERY CLEAR on my auctions that I can't accept PayPal credit card payments, I got some bozo send me one tonight. No problem, I thought. Just refuse the payment (AGAIN because they don't offer a way of automatically refusing them in the hopes that you'll get bored...

End of an HT era for Rob

Today I've packaged up and posted the final three LaserDiscs I owned. Pink Floyd's Pulse, the DTS edition of The English Patient and the big one - the DTS LD of Titanic. Also last Sunday, my Japanese model CLD-HF9G LaserDisc player (complete with heavy-duty 110v downconverter) also went off...

    Ever done any acoustic insulating?

My flat rennovation is nearing completion (I have a guy coming to quote me for a full bathroom job this weekend). It's a first floor maisonette, built in the mid 60s. Floor is solid conrete however I can hear TV and even some conversation from downstairs. Not especially clear or intrusively...

Denon DVD-2900 - no analogue subwoofer output

My new Denon DVD-2900 arrived today and it seems fine except for one issue - there's no bass output from the analogue RCA jack. I've tried using it with a digital connection to the amp and everything is as it should be. But when feeding the analogue outputs from the player into the amp (a...

    Odd Mozilla Firebird problem

Take a look at this site: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/home/index.html?_LOC=UK The grey buttons near the top (Brands, Categories, Account Help) - with IE these automatically drop down when the point is held over them (no clicking required). Up until yesterday, Mozilla Firebird was doing...

    Seal IV

Just wanted to start the thread about this album. First impressions - beautiful melodies and quite a diverse range of styles here. As with the previous three albums, it will take a while for this to sink in (as it is will all good records). Listening to the second track Love's Divine reminds...

Enough about Mozilla, what about Opera?

I've tried Mozilla again recently and while I do like it there's too many niggly things about it I don't like or because I miss them from IE. However I've just downloaded and installed Opera 7 which has come on a long way since I last used it a couple of years ago. This is a seriously good...
