Reliable DVD player for under $100?

Donald, If you can't locate the DV-270s, the newest version is the DV-275s and is still $100 or less depending on where you look. I too had problems with some discs in my JVC, and as I said before, the Pioneer handles everything I've put in it.

    Blind buy Athena bookshelf speakers

I can't speak for those speakers in particular, but I do have a set of Athena Micra6's that sound great. Build quality is good and the 5 year warranty is nice. I've been very happy with them. Athena seems to building up a following and I've read mostly good things about them.

Reliable DVD player for under $100?

Well, My $70 Pioneer DV-270s holds up very well next to my $300 JVC 723GD. And plays any and every type of media I throw at it, unlike the JVC, which I only keep around for SACD playback. So, there are some good quality, relieable players on the cheap.

    Yamaha HTR-5860

Well, I can give you my impresions from the short time I had my 5860. Fairly easy set-up. Didn't like the remotes layout, too crowded for my taste. Listened to several movies to test out DD5.1, DTS, PLII and stereo performance. I was trying to decide between repairing my HK AVR300, the...

    Yamaha HTR-5860

Had one for about 2 weeks, but ended up with the digital Onkyo LR552. No real complaints about the Yamaha, but the Onkyo seemed to go better with my setup.

    Speaker set-up...size or crossover setting??

Kean, As much as I have love my HK and the ones before it, there really is no contest as far as home theater use. Keep in mind that my HK is 5 years old and the Onkyo is using all the latest tech. As far as music, I haven't had a chance to do any real evaluation other than listening to Sarah...

    Speaker set-up...size or crossover setting??

That's what I found so confusing. I have mine set to small and my crossver point for the sub set to 100hz just as John G. had suggested. But I just got to wondering how all these setting worked. The manuals do little to shed light on how the settings affect each other. Heck, throw in the built...

    Speaker set-up...size or crossover setting??

Since I've been trying out some newer recievers I'm wondering how the speaker size and selectable sub crossover points for the sub work. My old HK AVR300 only had speaker size settings. No distance, room size etc. settings. If you set speakers size to small, doesn't that pretty much dictate...

    Onkyo or Yamaha receiver ?

Well, I tried out a Yamaha HTR-5860 and an Onkyo LR552 (digital reciever) to replace my ailing HK AVR300. Picked up the Yamaha last week and found it a decent replacement for my HK, but still felt it was lacking (couldn't quite put my finger on it). Brought home the Onkyo TX-LR552...

    Receiver recomendations needed...

Been on an upgrading tear lately and picking up the Sony KDF50WE655 LCD set, Athena Micra6 speaker set (down to $207 at BB, great deal!) to replace my mediocre Yamahas. Now my HK AVR 300's IR sensor has gone south, even the remote IR jack doesn't seem to be working. Which of course means that I...

Sony KDF50WE655, Good set? Good price?

Thanks for the feedback. Normally I do my research before I buy, but when i saw the price and how good the picture looked I jumped on it. I had been looking at the latest Mitsubishi 52" DLP and a couple of Samsungs when I passed by this set. I was going to try and stick with a Mits since...

Sony KDF50WE655, Good set? Good price?

I'm in the market for a new set as my Mits 46807 is starting to get a bit wonky on me and the extended service plan providers are jerking me around (I paid for a 5 year plan, but the only recognize it as a 3 year-and thus expired-plan). I was looking at a few sets by Mitsubishi, Samsung...

PC wouldn't boot, and now can't install XP!!!

Well, I removed the partiiton on the suspect HD and did a full format. Still got eh same problem, machine dies the instant it tries to start the actual install of Windows (tried it with XP Pro and Win2k Pro). Could the processor be bad? Although everything posts at the bios startup (memory...

PC wouldn't boot, and now can't install XP!!!

Got a major problem. Installed a new motherboard/memory (ECS KM400 w/ 512mb DDR)for a friends PC. Moved all of his components over (1ghz Athlon, 40gb Western HD, Lite-on DVD burner, 32X CD-Rom, 64mb Kyro II video card, 56k modem and some crappy sound card). Here's the problem: Went to...

*** Official STAR WARS DVD Glitch Thread

Any JVC (723GD is the one I have) DVD player owners already have this? I'm wondering if the subtitle (no alien language subs-commentary subs)/random menu(only one shows up unless you manually select a different one) problems from TPM and AOTC have reared their heads on the OT. None of these...

Why would a DVD suddenly NOT work?

I've had my Boogie Nights (original release), The Negotiator, The Postman and Goldeneye all go from working perfectly to not working at all. I tried to contact their respective comapnies via e-mail but never got any help, so now I have some nice coasters.

    Anyone ever travel by rail?

Travel by rail(Amtrak)= worst travel experience EVER!!! Went from Houston to L.A. about 2 years ago. Train was 6 hours late getting to Houston. Overall was running close to 8 hours behind. We had to actually get off almost 2 hours outside of L.A. so that we could even remotely stick to our...

    cigars vs cigs smoke

Well, it depends on what kind of cigars you are smoking. Some are very mild, while others can be overpowering. I don't think I could handle 2 a day (I smoke maybe one a week, and have never been a cig smoker). You've got lungs of steel if you inhale cigar smoke, some of them are just too...

Should I go see Rush tonight?

Have any of those that are debating Peart's drumming given a listen to this: It's produced by Neil and features a who's who of drummers paying tribute to Buddy Rich. Although he's only featured on one track, it was during this time that Neil switched to a more traditional style of...

    Rush and covers?

While I have yet to pick this up (will be doing so later today)but I can second what was said earlier about the live versions. They were GREAT. They just all out jammed on Crossroads. Heck they jammed out on all the covers they played (Seeker, Heart Full of Soul, Crossroads and Summertime...

Mountain bikers, help a kid out

Well, since you already have experience with riding and won't be tackling any really rough terrain, a hardtail is likley the best option for you. With your budget, your money will go a lot farther by buying a hardtail than by going for a full suspension (i.e. getting better components but having...

Mountain bikers, help a kid out

First off, what type of riding do you intend to do? Is this for light trails or serious mountain biking over varied terrain? With a $500 budget you won't be able to get much. I started with a full suspension Giant DS2 Warp, added a hardtail Kona after about a year for the flatter trials and...

Any good deals on Cancun vacation?

I've always gone through my travel agent. But you can go to Funjet Vacations website and pretty much make up yor own package with airfare, hotel and transportation if you want it. The Death of Splitscreen?

I never really cared much for splitscreen play (with the exception of racing games). For FPS's it seemed like a waste of time since you can't really employ much in the way of strategy since all you have to do is look over to your enemies portion of the screen to see where he is located. Now...

Unreal 2 for Xbox out in 4 days and no reviews so far.

I can't comment on the multi-player, but I can on the single player based on the PC version. If you didn't care for Unreal, then Unreal 2 will likely be even more of a letdown. I enjoyed Unreal (as well as Unreal Tournament, totally differnt I know) but Unreal 2 left me so bored I never...

Weee!! HD on my TV! Zenith 420.....

WOW....caught Threat Matrix(in 5.1 no less) and C.S.I. last night and I must say, they looked great. I haven't watched this much regular network TV in a long while. Such a big difference. So far, looks like the Zenith unit was a wise choice. I got a few dropouts on CBS, but a quick turn of my...

Well, after much waiting the fact that the Superbowl and Daytona 500 will be broadcast in HD pushedme over the edge. I picked up an open box Zenith OTA tuner at CC for $200. They have them for $250 new, but all the stores were out. WOW! After I finally figured out how to get it to work...
