    Copyright Cops?

As Lew and Dennis said, the US can already search whatever it wants when you're coming into the country - your luggage, your laptop, your iPod, you (though your various orifii are unsearchable without reasonable suspicion), etc. There is no expectation of privacy when crossing a border, and if...

    Jewel case recycling?

Does anybody know where I can recycle CD jewel cases? I have about 400 or so that I eventually want to dispose of. I googled and found this place - http://www.greendisk.com/gdsite/pack-ITservices.aspx, and they accept jewel cases - http://www.greendisk.com/Pop-ups/Ite...ispose-of.html...

Bicyclist charged with manslaughter after hitting woman

Did you forget the smiley? I hope so. Because I would imagine the straw-man walking on the sidewalk would rather you get hit by the car than themselves getting hit by a bicycle that shouldn't be ridden on the sidewalk. It's not that I don't think that we need to do more to provide safe...

Heart Rate Monitors - Are they necessary for an exercise program?

I recommend a heart rate monitor, as they allow you to exercise smarter, not harder.

    Preparing for the LSAT

Like Jeff said the PTO stopped footing the bill a couple of years ago. Granted, it wasn't totally free tuition - the tuition reimbursement was considered taxable income - but it was better than nothing. With regard to the patent bar, the office just instituted new regulations. Examiners who...

    Preparing for the LSAT

I'm not sure what I'll do for the bar, but luckily the patent office has generously provided all of the prep I need for passing the patent bar, leaving me an extra $4K for beer:)

The new eight ounce soda cans

They might be for people who only want a single serving of soda, since a single serving is 8 oz. I've heard odd rumors that some people find the amounts of soda in a single container (20 oz. bottles for example) to be excessive.

    Need a bright idea...

You could get a Dremel or other rotary tool with a metal file, and round the corners of the two l-brackets. Make sure you use a file that is meant for use with stainless steel, and that has never been used on carbon steel (to avoid rust problems).

    Foreign Languages

Multilingual Books - Spanish I purchased the Platiquemos FSI Basic Spanish Course level 1 on CD-ROM. I haven't really gotten into it yet, but from what I've seen/done so far, this seems to be a good home study course. Level 1 spends a good deal of time on pronunciation. Just going over...

    buying a bicycle - recomendations?

You probably want hybrid/comfort with 26 in tires. REI is having a great bike sale now (and until the 31st) - 20% off on most bikes. That includes their Novara brand, K2, Marin, and Cannondale. For example, a Cannondale Comfort 400 (with 26 in mountiain bike-ish tires) can be had for ~$425...

    can you over-marinate food?

If the marinade has citric acid (lemon juice, lime juice, etc), then you need to limit the amount of time the meat is in the marinade, because the acid starts to 'cook' the meat. I'm not sure what the mechanism is, though. Maybe it's the acid doing something to the protein in the meat that is...

to grad school or not to grad school?

For electrical engineers, it is possible that neither a graduate degree or a PE license is necessary. PE licenses are needed by those who sell their engineering services, and do engineering work for the public. For example, if you're an EE and you work for Intel designing computer stuff, what...

    A decent nonstick cookpot set.

I'm with Philip on the non-stick cookware. I have stainless pots and pans with copper-clad bottoms (for better heat distribution), and a cast iron skillet and a cast iron 5-quart dutch oven. Women who are 4'10" have been using cast iron skillets since cast iron skillets were invented. None...

Should I learn French or Spanish?

I have been struggling with this question myself. Since I already speak English, choosing other languages to learn is not an easy task, because there are many good reasons for choosing one over another. Spanish is great if you live in the North/South America. I would guess that a majority, or...
