    Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood" Trailer

I'm in. Didn't care for the 'rock' score in the trailer, but that's marketing, not the film itself. I'm a big Ridley Scott fan, though the last of his that I liked was 'American Gangster', and the last of his that I loved was the DC of 'Kingdom of Heaven'. Can't say I share the sentiment that...

    Help...cluless about turntables!

I have the Audio Technica TT mentioned in the link, bought it for myself last December, and I've been very happy with it. For the price, it's an excellent "starter" table that still beats the lower end stuff out there. I had my eye on a Technics 1200, but couldn't swing it.

Blu-ray Review HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Watchmen: Director's Cut

'Watchmen' improved on my second viewing in the theater, and I liked it to begin with. My viewing of the 'Director's Cut' bumped it up even further. Also, I usually don't bother with IME or PiP tracks, but the 'Maximum Movie Mode' is fantastic and a real step forward for this kind of...

*** Official STAR WARS Saga (episodes I to VI) Discussion Thread: Part 4

Feels like I was just in line for this one. I still get the 'prequel itch' when late May rolls around, but today I look back ten years and realize how bitter and jaded I've become. I'll never consider TPM as great, but I watched portions of it last night (it was after midnight, so it counts as...

Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I never realized that Star Trek VI was a rotoscoped animated film all this time. Slap a 'Directed by Richard Linklater' credit on it, and we're good to go. Thankfully, that's the worst of it in the transfer, but still... I'm finding that the DNR work here actually gets more and more annoying...

Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I'm not dissing the color timing outright, but one shot in particular (the vertical pan from Enterprise 'up' to the other pole of Regula I, stopping at Reliant next to the station) looked WAY too blue. The planetoid itself had a more grayish tinge, looking fine, but the vessels themselves...

Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Got my set today. I've only sampled II and VI so far... Star Trek VI: My initial reaction was more on the positive side, the image has a great deal more 'solidness' for the lack of a better term compared to the DVD, and a marked improvement. That being said, there are definite DNR gremlins...

*** Official STAR TREK (2009) Review Thread

Just going to get this out of the way. I like the concept of an "alternate universe" reboot, and am not beholden to 'TOS' Star Trek. (DS9 is actually my favorite series). I was more than willing to give the movie every fair shake, and in fact, my heart was pounding with anticipation as the stars...

    DTS HD-Master Audio woes

I forgot something about the DTS-HD settings. If set to 'PCM', it will output any DTS-HD or DTS-HD-MA tracks as PCM, even though it can only access the core DTS track from a DTS-HD-MA. There are some, but not many, titles that use DTS-HD. They're mostly older Lionsgate titles ("American...

    DTS HD-Master Audio woes

What firmware version is your player at? I recall there was an update to version 2.5 to correct DTS playback issues on some Universal titles. The same thing could be at work here. I would also make sure that 'DTS' and 'DTS-HD' are set to 'Bitstream', as you're only going to be able to access...

    The Matrix - March 31, 1999

My first exposure to 'The Matrix' was a small sidebar in 'Cinescape' magazine in late '98 or so. My initial reaction was a decisive 'meh' as visions of Johnny Mnemonic danced in my head. I was sure it would be an incoherent, choppy mess, trying to ride on style alone. Then I saw the trailer...

    WTB: Pioneer Elite VSX-39TX

Any particular reason you're looking for a 39-tx? I have a 37-TX, which is the same with the exception of no rosewood side panels and the remote is a standard Pioneer type rather than the 39-Tx's touchscreen.

A man names his son Adolph Hitler.

From the article: "The Campbells have swastikas in each room of their home, the rented half of a one-story duplex just outside Milford, a borough in Hunterdon County. They say they aren't racists but believe races shouldn't mix." Where's an 'exploding head' icon when you need one? And...

    WHV Announcement: RocknRolla (DVD/Blu-ray)

Okay, it's official. We need a 'sarcasm' smiley. Anyone want to design one? In all honesty, I thought it a was remark along the lines of "They gave THIS title a TrueHD track?".

    WHV Announcement: RocknRolla (DVD/Blu-ray)

Blu-ray Review HTF Blu-Ray Review: Iron Man Ultimate Two-Disc Edition (RECOMMENDED!)

Just sampled my copy. High marks all around. Paramount seems to do no wrong with their day and date releases. The video quality looked..."right" for the lack of a better term. Plenty of detail and grain structure, with no artificial enhancements (DNR/EE). The TrueHD track was no slouch either...

Blu-ray Review HTF Blu-Ray Review: Transformers (Highly Recommended)

I experienced similar 'jaggies' with my old HD-A1 and Toshiba 46h84 1080i CRT. They disappeared when I upgraded to a Sony SXRD 50a3000 1080p set. Is your Xbox drive/Windows XP box setup outputting a 1080i or 1080p signal? It sounds like something isn't de-interlacing properly in the video chain.

    Madonna: Hard Candy

(Waves hand) I've uh...heard the album through... unnamed sources... and while I like '4 Minutes', it's actually one of the weaker tracks in the context of the album. Most of the Pharrell Williams produced material is outstanding, and two of the Timbaland/Timberlake productions are fantastic...

Best Buy's peace offering: $50 coupon for HD-DVD owners

I was surprised to get the e-mail from Best Buy claiming I qualified for the $50, until I realized it was for the HD-A1 purchased back at the end of Summer '06. Talk about thorough. I'll grab some May Blu-Ray releases with it.

Will Universal re-release the Bourne films in Blu-ray?

The "Explosive Extended Edition" is nothing of the kind. I believe it only had a non-seamless branching option for an alternate ending. Every edition available, including the HD-DVD, is of the theatrical cut. And all of this is assuming they announce Blu-Ray support...

Now confirmed development: Sony to discontinue rear-projection HDTVs

Speaking as a new owner of a 50A3000 RPTV (Mmmmmm.....1080p), I'm both dismayed and relieved at my last-minute impulse to buy one this November. To get this screen size with either LCD or Plasma flat panel would've required a much bigger outlay of cash. Seriously, this set is only about 14"...

    Die Hard on Blu Ray

The improvement on Die Hard 3 is amazing, judging by those screen caps. No more EE or smeared details. The improvement in color depth almost seems like just an added bonus. Nice to see it looking great on home video for the first time in, oh, twelve years or so...

Paramount recalls and re-releases 'The Jack Ryan' collection

The day after this was processed and shipped, came the news about the extras, and the day of the recall is when the set arrived. I'll hold onto it, given that I'm very pleased with the presentation of the films, and the re-issue is likely going to bare-bones anyway. I can't believe the...

The Offical Fox Title Cancellation Notice Thread ( Q3/4 07 edition

I've had Master & Commander on pre-order since early September. That title's cancellation/postponement/whatever you wanna call it is bad enough, but the Die Hard trilogy being bumped to a quadrilogy is MOST annoying for myself. I'm going to have to find a killer deal, combined with a decent...

Fox/MGM announce 19 titles for BD this Fall

Nice to see Fox is delivering with these releases. I was planning on getting the first three Die Hard entries, so this will probably be the best per-title price available for any Fox release. Starting to feel much better about my Blu-Ray player purchase. :)
